Your tires and you: More info than you ever wanted to know about tires: How to know if your tires need to be replaced: Most American states (and provinces in Canada) mandate at minimum 1/16 inch (1.6mm) of tread. Easiest way to tell? In America, if you put a penny in the tread upside down, and if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you need new tires (legally) In Canada, if you can see the word "elizabeth" on the penny you need new tires. in England, if you can see the queen's head on a british penny, you need new tires. 1/16 of an inch is honestly too low of a tread to be safe. Consumer reports suggests a minimum of 1/8 of an inch of tread for safety, especially if you drive in wet weather a lot. To see 1/8 of an inch: In America, use a quarter. The distance from the quarter's rim to George Washington’s hairline is about one-eighth inch. If you see George’s head, consider replacing your tires. Brits or Canadians, on yourpenny, you would see the top of the Queen's forehead. What do all the codes on my tires mean?? What the numbers mean: tire sizing: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=46 TL/DR: cross section in mm/aspect ratio/wheel diameter. Lots more info above. Uniform Tire Quality Grade: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=48 Finding the age of your tires: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11 (don't be like me and buy a car with 4 year old tires on it!) Whats wrong with my tires?? http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/checking-your-tires-for-wear.html Info on snow tires (which I know nothing about): http://cars.about.com/od/adviceforowners/a/snowtires.htm Something to keep in mind when buying "road hazard" warranties: Remember, most are only good for one year, and then are prorated. Keep this in mind if you want to buy road hazard warranties. Some tires already come with them. Should I pay extra for my tires to be filled with Nitrogen? No. Nitrogen is 78% of the atmosphere. your tires are already filled with Nitrogen. if you're a member at Costco, go ahead and let them fill your tires up with Nitrogen for free. nitrogen fucked around with this message at 20:44 on Oct 5, 2010 |

This is hard to find, in part because the site's main page links back to the SCCA site. And it just doesn't index highly on Google for some reason. It's a breakdown of the SCCA Solo II (autocross) classes. Mostly for reference, as new cars aren't being added into it. Under the new car buying area, I recommend the person look under the trunk mat at the area surrounding the spare as if there is any water leakage it will be evident there.

I'm sure there's at least one other person on this forum with a Pontiac G6, and if there is, then I've done my part. DO VISIT: http://www.g6performance.com DON'T VISIT: http://www.g6ownersclub.com People on G6 Owners' Club are too loving stupid to do anything, and there's absolutely no useful or clear information on the forum at all. On the plus side, if you want to laugh at hilarious engine covers, then it's a worthwhile stop.

I have a traffic question. I'm in California, I got pulled over a few weeks ago for rolling through a stop sign. The fine is loving $240 and I make poo poo money working 10 hour shifts out at a construction site 40 miles from where I live--meaning I don't really have the time or the money to deal with this. I'm going to have an extremely difficult time paying for that, plus the $70 in court fees if I choose to do traffic school, but I'll have a more difficult time paying raised insurance rates. This is the first moving violation I've ever gotten in seven years of driving so I'm not entirely sure how traffic school works--if I attend, do I avoid getting points on my license and elevated insurance rates? Will I still have a "clean driving record," which I'm gonna need in a month or two when I apply for a better job?

Take internet traffic school, so you don't have to physically attend sessions. if you take traffic school you will not get a point on your license. The point is not suppose to show up on your public(?) driving record. DMV has a method of tracking when you last took traffic school internally that they don't share. You can take traffic school every 18 months.

I got a ticket for laying drag in Atlanta and plead nolo contendre. In that area, at least, it meant you paid the fine and it was then struck from your driving record with no points. You could only use this out once every 5 years or so though. Worth checking if that's an option in your area.

Might not be much call for it here in AI, but if anyone owns a Ford Maverick (or is looking to buy) then http://mmb.maverick.to is the be-all end-all of Maverick-specific information. It's basically corral.net for the Maverick.

Any advice for finding a non-lovely used car dealership? (bonus points if it's in LA!) I know "LOL Yelp" and "LOL Google", "LOL BBB" are really the best bets, but they're just not really helping me narrow my search. Medical / student loan stuff has put my credit in a place where reputable places like Carmax and the like probably won't even talk to me.

Are there any websites that keep an up to date list of at least horsepower and weight specs for modern cars (say, less than 10 years old)? Ideally I would like to see a sortable table with power/weight ratio and even price. I've found a couple manually created lists, but nothing comprehensive. http://www.windingroad.com/articles/lists/list-top-ten-best-power-to-weight-ratios-under-40000/#1 http://www.carforums.net/showthread.php?35658-List-of-power-to-weight-ratios

I haven't seen anything in this forum on guides to selling your used car. I'm selling my car and I had hoped that someone would have laid out the pros and cons of selling to individuals vs. dealers, websites like Carmax.com, how to value your car, how Blue Book value relates to the price you can reasonably ask, what things like excellent condition vs. good condition actually entail, how to make a good ad for your car on craigslist or whatever, etc. There's a guide for buying in this thread so slapping a guide for selling in one of the reserved posts on the first page makes sense to me. Maybe I've completely overlooked something and all the AI regulars will laugh at me but I think this thread is incomplete without all that stuff. At least a couple of links to http://www.kbb.com/ and http://www.carmax.com/ seem called for.

Taking traffic school may keep you from getting a point, but it may not necessarily keep your insurance from going up. You may want to call your insurance company to find out whether they would still rate you for the moving violation. I'm not an insurance agent, but I work for an insurance company and I know our agents get this question a lot.

If you take traffic school it should not show on your record, but then on the DMV's side they are suppose to keep a record if you received the waiver in the last 18 months. Your rates should not change.

I'll cross post this since I put it in the thread with the guys egr valve issue. All you students or people out there with public access to an online library resource called Ebsco, they have an online auto repair reference center now. It was in beta from nov-dec and they took the beta label off of it in jan, however it's still very much a work in progress, it just doesn't kick you out all the time now. Anyway, it's mostly complete but they're still adding information and new vehicles every day. It is a wonderful online resource when it works for your vehicle and typically you can get to it for free granted your school or local library has Ebsco host as their online resource vendor. Right now it's still very much a "YMMV" resource, but it works out great for most vehicles, yet some vehicles are completely lacking pictures (the 2 Tacoma's I looked up) and other vehicles that you wouldn't expect all the information to be there is there (98 jetta TDI AHU engine).

I have hosted some Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth service manuals for a long time. Are these filez? Or are we still allowed to post these? I remember them being in this thread a long time ago, like 2004 or so. I also have the TSMs for the Mirage (Lancer) from 1994-1999 or so. But no one cares about that thing.

I'm not sure if I can post this hear, or Ask/Tell or E/N or whatever, but where can I get good advice in dealing with auto insurance? My car got fairly crushed by a falling oak tree during a storm, and insurance is trying to just get the car fixed while I am being told elsewhere that the car needs to be totaled.

Seat's question is a good one, but here's a rundown if you've got them mounted up on another set of wheels already. code:
If you don't have your summers mounted already, you'll have to take them all somewhere and have the tires swapped over. I would seriously suggest that you get a second set of rims to have them mounted on though. If you keep swapping tires, the beads will eventually get worn out and you'll develop slow leaks.

melon cat posted:The winter tires have rims, so I'm just trying to dismount the winter tires from the wheel and mount the summer tires on. So you have summer tires that aren't mounted. This is a no-go if you need to ask, because even if you used tire irons to break them down and mount them on the wheels, you still need a balancing machine to make it right. By which I mean, if you have to ask you obviously don't have this equipment and it likely costs as much as your car to acquire.

I figured that it should be an easy off-and-on job- am I correct in assuming that this eliminates the need for a balancing machine? Yes. And please don't use lingo you don't completely understand. That's why no one was able to figure out what you were talking about. A wheel is the rim. The tire is the rubber part. Dismounting a tire from a wheel means removing the tire from the rim, which requires a tire machine (and a balance after you've put a new on on). Your question, as I understand it now, was quite well answered by Boaz MacPhereson.

What about beating the dealerships' finance managers at their own game, i.e. not getting screwed in an auto loan? I know I saw a post a good while back somewhere linking to an editorial about such a thing, but I can't remember where it came from.

It all basically boils down to: Know what you want Do your research before entering the dealership. Don't negotiate on monthly payments Don't use dealer financing Let dealers compete against each other for the sale.

Is there a leasing vs. buying write-up anywhere? My line of thinking is you compare the amount you'd pay to the amount your car would lose in value over that period. Is that the right way to look at it?
