Starring: Hillary Swank

I attended a screening last night for "The Reaping". Based on the preview it seemed like a good old fashioned biblical tale that would be good enough to kill two hours pleasantly.
Part of that was true.

The story follows a minister-cum-professor [who has lost her faith in God] as she investigates a series of paranormal incidents in the small town of Haven.

Lets start with the good: There are some good visual, a few good "jump" moments, and a nice creepy swamp atmosphere.

Now, the rest;
While the movie is predictable from the get-go, premise of biblical plagues seemed like it it would be hard to screw up, yet somehow, they do. The entire last half of the movie shows them cranking through the list of plagues like it was stated excathedra that they squeeze in everything from boils to toads in 120 minutes or less.

The acting is typical Hillary Swank. That is to say she can pull off any character except one that is supposed to be intelligent. Her co-stars are no better, David Morrissey attempts "southern" and comes out more wooden than a 2x4.

Every other character in this film is typecast to a "T". The mayor was, apparently, transported from 1952, as he still wear the straw hat and white linen suit while everyone around him dresses normally.

Compound this with a plot that has needless flashbacks, inexplicable "visions", the creepiest Aryan girl that Hitler could have imagined, and you have yourself one big gumbo of stupidity.

Currently clocking in with a cool 0% rating on Rottentomatoes, I would have to concur. This movie is not good. This is not even a good rental. You might watch this on TBS if you were really bored, but that is about it.

RATING: 2.0

PROS: Good visuals
CONS: Acting, pacing, plot
