Directed by: Kirby Dick Starring: Kirby Dick, a host of directors commenting on the topic of the movie I was very impressed by this movie, first hearing about it on these very forums. The movie basically shows how this secretive star chamber of supposedly average American parents decide what rating a movie will get. It talks about how the NC-17 rating, while not outright censorship amounts to such because no one but art house theaters can show them. It talks about double-standards between sex and violence, and between homosexual sex and heterosexual Jesus approved sex, like how a movie like "But I'm a Cheerleader" gets an NC-17 because of an implied lesbian masturbating but American Pie gets an R which features a dude having sex with a pie. I found the documentary very moving and helped me share the movie-makers frustration that this cartel, the MPAA, has so much authority and power to decide what we can and cannot watch. RATING: 5 PROS: Great expose about the MPAA and how stupid ther rating system is CONS: Surprised the left out a lot of things about the DMCA, but they are in the deleted scenes ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/

The film actually prompted MPAA to make a number of changes to the review process, so I guess in terms of being a catalyst for change it's a successful documentary. It raises a number of good points and the R/NC-17 comparison montage is spot-on, but the film spends too much time stalking the MPAA members, even if it does eventually pay off. 4/5

Very enjoyable if you ignored the whole private investigator poo poo that really kept ruining the pacing of this documentary. They really could have just summed it up with "So I ended up hiring a P.I. and this is what they found: " Watching them go through the whole process actually half-ruined my perception of the P.I.'s credibility. 4.5/5 without the P.I. poo poo 3.5 with it.
