It looks like there's a scene of some sort in the courtyard smack-dab in the middle of the theater, but...

[Ogami]

Hi, did you come to see the stars as well, Yuri-kun?

[Yuri]

Well, that too, but... it was mostly for a change of pace, I guess.
Ah... be careful if you go over there.

[Ogami]

Hm....? Is there something over there?

[Yuri]

Ha! Ha! Ha! Nothing at all! There's nothing behind those bushes over there!!

[Ogami]

... Yuri, is that BLOOD on your shir-

[Yuri]

NO IT IS NOT
----

[Yuri]

There's a bird's nest there. The courtyard has a lot of bushes, so it's probably good for nest-making.

----

Next morning, Yuri had to be restrained by five people when she found Ogami eating scrambled sparrow eggs and fried sparrow.

[Ogami]

... yup, there's no problem over here. Guess I should get going, too.

We still haven't finished checking out the basement, huh? We've still got some time left, so.

lol, I totally forgot to tell you guys that pressing the 'square' button zooms out and lets you see the whole floor plan, as it were

We've already checked out the hangars, and I know for a fact that nothing of value is gained by going into the storage room, so I send Ogami to check out the command room (however good of an idea THAT will turn out to be).

OH JESUS IT'S A SUMIRE

GET IN THE SCENE

----

The second Sumire opened her mouth, her wild, mambo-ish theme song started blaring.

I speak from experience when I say "that's never a good sign."

[Ogami]

Aah. That's right, but...

[Sumire]

Which means that you are accomplished at swimming, correct?

----
[Ogami]

Yeah, totally, 'cause being in the Navy meant that I was in the water 90% of the time, tugging our boats along with ropes and trying not to get eaten alive by sharks.

[Sumire]

... I do not appreciate your withering sarcasm, Ensign.

[Ogami]

Actually, I'm being totally serious. I think my commander might've really hated my guts.

[Ogami]

Well, that's correct in itself...

... alrighty then, I gue-

[Sumire]

As endowed with beauty, virtue, cleavage, and wealth as I am, my one and only weakness is swimming....
Once I conquer this weakness, I will have achieved absolute perfection!

YES, SUMIRE, WE GET IT. :froggonk:

If there's one thing that can be said about Sumire, it's that she's got a fairly ludicrous amount of expressions.

[Ogami]

Ah, aah... it's fine with me, but... um, Sumire-kun...

Clearly, Ogami has been struck dumb by Sumire's long-winded ego-stroking beauty and virtue and wealth.

(You can tell when I have some trouble translating things.)

[Ogami]

Right then, Sumire-kun, I won't hold back! I'm not going to take it easy on you!!

----
[Ogami]

I'm dropping you in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! You'll have to swim back by yourself!!

[Sumire]

What?! But that's--

[Ogami]

Trial by fire, woman! It's for your own good!!
----

[Sumire]

You seem reliable, Ensign. I'm looking forward to our intensive training!
Let us aim for perfection! I leave this in your capable hands.

[Ogami]

Aah, leave it to me!

Is there anything that you would like to ask me about it, Ensign?

----
[Ogami]

Anything?

[Maria]

Within reason, yes.

[Ogami]

Who destroyed the most Wakiji?

[Maria]

Technically, Sakura did. Her 'Ouka Houshin' was the decisive factor, I felt.

[Ogami]

What did Sumire do?

[Maria]

Basically nothing, until we faced down the demon-driven soldier 'Kamui'. She was hampered by her inability to really move.

[Ogami]

What does the name of your final attack translate as, anyway?

[Maria]

Something along the lines of 'Snowmaiden', based on a Russian folktale.

[Maria]

The enemy's leader did take us by surprise, but your commands were admirable.

[Ogami]

Thank you... I'll do my best from here on out, as well.

[Maria]

Furthermore, not one of our units was forced to withdraw last battle, so our situation remained ideal.
Next time, please continue to command us in a way that minimizes our damage taken, as well.

Believe me, I plan to. A KO'd pilot is a horribly unhappy pilot, after all.

[Ogami]

Aah, good night. I'm counting on you next time as well, Maria.

... we'll see about THAT.

[Maria]

Not at all.... since that was your first battle, Ensign, I gave you my opinion this time, but...
In the end, the one who issues commands to the Flower Division is you, Ensign.
From here on out please make use of what experience you gain during battle and decipher it on your own.

RUH-ROH, RAGGY!

[Sakura]

Ogami-san.... what in the world are you doing in front of Sumire-san's room?

[Sumire]

What the Ensign is going to do has nothing to do with you.

[Ogami]

Er, um...

When all else fails, go with the moronic protagonist route!

[Ogami]

Ah.... er, no, thi, this is...

[Sumire]

Sakura-san. The truth is, the lamplight in my room has broken.
So I called the Ensign over, because I thought that he might be able to fix it.

... this sounds like the premise of a bad porno. "Baby, I'll change YOUR lightbulbs ANY day of the week... for free." :pervert:

[Sumire]

Oh my, but what could I possibly gain by making up a lie here?

Entrance into Ogami's pants, for one.

[Sumire]

For our sakes, the Ensign has been working until it's become thi-s late, you know.

[Sakura]

That's right, isn't it. I've misunderstood, haven't I. I'm sorry...

[Ogami]

Sumire-kun....

----

... this is actually a fairly nice advantage to having Sumire on your side. :frogbon:

[Ogami]

Th, thanks.

[Sumire]

Oh, no, that was nothing. Now then, please do come in.

On the plus side, at least Sumire isn't mooning over Ogami anymore.

Yet. :tinfoil:

.... where does she keep her clothes?

Click 'n look time, even though Sumire may or may not be behind Ogami, ready to brain him with a flowerpot isn't in the picture yet.

[Ogami]

(... what a gorgeous bouquet.)

Not having enough of Ogami's wonderful floral descriptions, I click on the OTHER flowers.

[Ogami]

(Still, they're gorgeous... I wonder if she received these from her fans?)

... I'm starting to get the impression that her family is so rich that they use money as toilet paper.

[Ogami]

Even so, it's an amazing room...

Another advantage to having Sumire as a love interest: Ogami would gain access to Sumire's vast fortune.

... :signings:

Suddenly, Sumire is looking like a better and better alternative. :3:

[Ogami]

(Maybe it's because she's in her own room, but Sumire-kun... seems a bit more relaxed.)

Hell, I'm happy that she isn't constantly making doe eyes at Ogami anymore. :gonk:

Durr hurr hurr, a-hurr hurr hu- :quagmire:

... naaaaah, I'll stick to talking.

[Ogami]

Sumire-kun, why do you want to keep your training a secret?

Surprisingly, there are things that even Sumire doesn't want to boast to others about. Though she seems just fine with reminding everyone that she's well-endowed with beauty, wealth, and grace.

I try to talk with her again.

[Ogami]

Sumire-kun...

----

Huh. I never would've pegged Sumire as having such a romantic, poetic outlook on life.

Especially since her family's money pool could probably rival McScrooge's.

[Ogami]

.........

'Course, all of that was probably lost on Ogami.

Before either of them can say anything more, the clock sounds off.

[Ogami]

They're going to switch off the power soon. It looks like my nightly rounds end here.

[Sumire]

I was hoping that we would be able to take our time, but...

[Ogami]

No, I enjoyed myself a lot. I even managed to get some good exercise in.

I, I...

Did Ogami just make a perverted statement? For the life of me, I can't tell. :gonk:

(Incidentally, Sumire's trust level spikes.)

[Ogami]

Hahahaha..... good night.

I like Sumire quite a bit more after this update, but I'm still keeping Maria as my #1 vote. Also, this is turning out to be a much better game than I thought it'd be. Atlus or someone seriously needs to bring these over here, although I guess it's a bit late for that now.

Also, as a side note, I just started playing Etrian Odyssey tonight, and the shopkeeper talks in exactly the same way as how you interpreted Kohran. Anybody here know if it's an instance of the same Japanese accent?

Magic Eight Ball says extremely likely to be the same or a similar Japanese accent; Spirit Armor's use of an American "dialect" to replace the Japanese dialect is a pretty common move in translations, simply because there's no other real way to bring it over... even if our 'dialects' are pretty weaksauce compared to the Japanese, who can barely understand people from sufficiently distant parts of the country.

Also yeah Sumire seems like quite the sweetie here; definately looking promising on her end, given that for all that she's a little quirky she's still yet to strap Ogami to a crucifix and "test" him for "science." (and neither is she blond pedo-bait! Or a crazy jealous stalker!) We'll see, though. I'm not doubting this game's ability to make anyone into a crazy whackjob after that last bit. :tinfoil:

Gonna have to agree with Rollersnake here, Sumire is making a very strong #2 or #1 pinch hitter. She's got a personality, she's loaded, she's attractive, she has money, she's rich.... lotta good qualities there.

Liking the thread so far, but I had a question. In most of the conversations so far I've noticed a little semicircle bar thing on the left hand of Ogami's portrait with various colored portions. While I can take a guess, I have to ask, what is that? An indicator of how well you impressed each of the ladies that time out?

Please, please don't let me end up in a threesome with the lunch lady and a gay pirate. That would hit a little too close to home.

Liking the thread so far, but I had a question. In most of the conversations so far I've noticed a little semicircle bar thing on the left hand of Ogami's portrait with various colored portions. While I can take a guess, I have to ask, what is that? An indicator of how well you impressed each of the ladies that time out?

It's how much time you have left to make your choice. We've seen how you sometimes have to wait until a certain point for certain choices to become available.

Oh man, this was the most hilarious update yet. Not moving away from Team Maria just yet, but Sumire is certainly showing a nicer side :)

Quick reply 'cause I totally forgot to explain a game mechanic (mostly because I didn't actually figure it out until the beginning of this playthrough):

At the beginning of each chapter, the little gauge next to Ogami's portrait starts out empty- but it fills up pretty quickly. Each answer choice you make is usually attributed to one of three colors: Red (honest and/or hot-blooded), Blue (sociable and/or flirtatious), and Yellow (cautious and/or usin' the ol' brain).

Whichever answer you choose fills up a little bit of that gauge, regardless of how the heroine/character in question takes you answer. Sometimes, the gauge fills up in scenes where you DON'T make answer choices (for instance, the scene with Maria in the command room gives you a huge boost on Red, Blue, AND Yellow). It's virtually impossible to NOT fill the gauge up all the way.

The total amount of color you have in your gauge is calculated before the start of the battle, and you can generally see it in the pre-battle stats screen (which I'll remember to show this time around). The game calculates the predominant color in your gauge, and assigns Ogami one of four Captain categories: "Fire" (Red), "Wind" (Blue), "Mountain" (Yellow), and "Wood" (if all three colors are mixed too much- this is very common, at least for me).

In the last battle, Ogami ended up as 'Wood' because most of my answer choices were scattered all across the board (and due to his low rank, which climbs as you go through the game, his title was simple 'Wakaba'- 'Young Leaves'). More importantly, however, the Captain category determines how his Final Attack works. Because Ogami was "Wood", he got the Kaitou Ranma- it would've differed greatly had he been Fire, Wind, or Mountain. I'm pretty sure that Fire is an AOE- a miniature version of Sakura's Final Attack- but I haven't ever gotten any of the other ones.

Also, being a "Wood" captain might've given Ogami's corresponding Wood Strategy a bigger bonus or something. I'm not entirely sure myself yet. Trying to land a different Captain category hasn't exactly been on my highest list of priorities, as the RESULTS of the answers I choose take precedence over the TYPE of answer.

I decided to step out of lurkerdom to express my appreciation for this thread. I have always wanted to play these games but am not nearly fluent enough in Japanese to do so. Your translation and excellent commentary has made this one of my favorite LPs ever. Please keep up the good work!

Oh, and the last update has solidified my spot on the Sumire bandwagon.

Sumire may be sweet all of a sudden, but it made her all unfunny. Now she's almost as oozy and saccharine as Sakura. Unless she gets bitchy again it's Kohran all the way. :supaburn:

I can't believe I read the whole thing.

Thanks for this LP with handy translations. I was going to vote Maria, then vote Kohran (until she went and did the mad scientist Washuu thing, complete with lights around the head) but now I gotta vote Sumire. She's loaded, stacked and loaded. And maybe she'll move faster on the battlefield now that she's full of BURNING PASSION.

You are a horrible person.

Can there be some kind of "everybody EXCEPT Iris" option? I mean. Sumire has cleavage, so obviously I like her. Maria's just awesome because she's a manly Russian sniper badass. Sakura kills things with swords, which makes up for her creepy stalker tendencies, and Kohran is an exploding nerd who really reminds me of Agatha Clay from Girl Genius. Only Southern.

...okay, looking at all the above choices, I gotta say my vote's with Kohran. Never mind. :D
