Glazius posted:Well, look at it this way. In other strategy-RPGs your method for powering up your team is to set them to auto-spar, drive off to the nearest Sonic, eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert there until you've exhausted its entire menu, then return home and realize you'll have to do the whole thing again because 30 minutes in the game decided to show one of the battle phrases it has 0.005% chance of displaying and you needed to hit X to clear it. That is... I hadn't really thought of it that way, erm... Excellent point.

There's a new Sakura Taisen game for the DS coming out. Well, not coming out in English but you get the idea. And it's a rogue-like? Screenshots show lil' Chibi Ogami with a sword and shield fighting monsters. I have to believe it's an Iris-induced nightmare. There's a clip at Insertcredit.

Spirit Armor posted:See, I was actually somewhat excited when I'd heard initial reports of the Sakura Wars DS game. You can pick and choose your team out of all eighteen or so heroines from all three major games! You can send them running around and decimate evil! Whoopee! I wouldn't just yet. Consider the following: 1) The demo includes Ogami with a sword and shield, for melee combat. This is a Mysterious Dungeon trope but more than that it's not Classically Japanese. Shields existed mostly as portable cover against range attacks, there wasn't enough metal to make them. (As a side note, it's kinda ironically funny that thus far Kanna's fighting style is the most recent vintage. The Chinese had rocketry in the 10th century and gunners by the 13th, but Okinawan karate and the subsequent weaponization of the tonfa are late 19th century.) This suggests we're dealing with an entire alternate universe. 2) Giant robots and the entire steampunk milieu don't show up out of mechanical necessity but a desire for Maximum Awesome. Clearly there has to be _some_ contrivance around to allow otherwise-combat-incapable characters to hit things with their feelings, but this is either magic or technology sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable therefrom. 2a) "Therefrom" doesn't trigger my spellcheck. Apparently it is actually a word. Who knew? 3) If the entire Sakura Wars cast are more than just fragile amalgams of personality and situation, they can be ported to an entirely different world setup without substantial loss of tone. This is the characteristic of a true "ensemble cast". 4) Sakura Wars is functionally a strategy RPG but with a completely distinct power-up mechanic. There's no reason this mechanic can't be ported over to a Mysterious Dungeon game, perhaps intertwined with dungeon exploration via a kind of Shadow Hearts or Anachronox-type system, where items found in the dungeon are used in town sequences to power up the characters. 5) I'll leave it up to your imagination precisely who gets combat upgrades from the gay porn.

I'm pretty sure that Sakura is already capable of unleashing her Ouka Houshin (big pink destructo wave) without her robot, and I wouldn't put it past Kanna to, well, break things whether or not she's actually in her robot, so... 2a) English is weird like that. 3) I'm not at all worried that the cast could stand up to something weird like this... it's the tone I'm worried about. I don't really want to see this turn into a random cutesy game, especially since I'm not entirely sure the company will be able to pull it off WELL. 4) Well, I was hoping that it'd be more of a standard RPG (or even a classic Sakura Wars-style game, which would be a first for the DS). Granted, I also don't have a very good impression of Mysterious Dungeon-style games, and I really don't want to see this turn into a giant let-down. 5) ... and then it turns out that EVERYONE does, which is about when, for Ogami, the game takes a turn for the truly frightening.

No... I can't do anythin' outSIDE of karate... That's what I'd thought the entire time. Doing something like standing upon a stage... that'd never even crossed my mind. [Kanna] Right in front of me, that curtain went up, see? ... and when it did, all I could see in front of me was this dazzling, brilliant light. In an instant, that which had anchored me to this world was ruthlessly torn from-- ---- [Ogami] Boo! This movie sucks!! [???] ... Ensign?! [Ogami] Maria? Is that you? Hey, could you pass the popcorn? [???] What the HELL are you doing in my expository flashback?! [Ogami] Hey, I wasn't kidding when I was wondering what kind of dream you'd be seeing tonight, so I figured why not pop over and take a look at it for myself? I mean, you're the only one with an actual mov-- [Ogami] Hey, who's that chick? I'd totally hit her. [???] ... [Ogami] ... what? I would, she's ridiculously hot. You know, in that horribly illegal kind of way. Though I guess my tastes are a little bit on the younger side-- [???] GET OUT. [Ogami] Can I get at least get a refund on my ticket? [???] NOW. [Ogami] Okay, fine, fine... [???] ... god, I'm going to have to start over, aren't I. Where'd that goddamn remote go... [???] ... rassin'-frassin'-sunnuvavarmint... ** [???] Wha-- baby pictures?! DAMMIT, too far back, where's that stupid fast forward button on this thing-- c'mon, c'mon... ---- YEAR 1917, RUSSIA No matter how much I try to forget that day... I can't. I won't. Those bloody, desperate hours blurred together. We'd all lost track of time, stuck in that merciless cycle of life or death. It was the only thing that mattered- kill, or be killed. On we went, rushing into the fray, gritting our teeth and running into the hail of bullets. For each inch we gained, many of us- too many of us- died for a hopeless cause, as if those hard-won inches were actually WORTH something by that point. Even though snow was everywhere, I never felt the punishing chill that sank through even the warmest gloves or the heaviest coats. By that time, I could barely feel anything, aside from fear. The ambush- the betrayal- had doomed us from the start; we were undone, our forces as good as shattered. I held onto my beliefs, but even those were starting to blur together, made meaningless by the rush of adrenaline that comes in the face of death... So I held onto my blind faith, held onto my belief that our leader would pull us through this last battle and give us the opportunity to regroup. And why wouldn't he? He was the one who gave me hope, and saved me from falling prey to my own despair. He taught me everything I knew, everything that was currently keeping me alive. He anchored me to this Earth, he held me together, prevented me from turning into a mindless killing machine... He was the center of my unverse. It was a wholly reckless manuever, born of desperation-- dashing out of cover into the open- - to draw the enemy's fire- - thus giving the rest of us a chance to take advantage of their temporary lapse in attention- - and by the time I'd figured out what he was trying to do- ---- It was already too late. No. "CAPTAIN! This time. This time, I'll make it to his side-- I can still save him, I just need to hurry... please, I can't-- not again.... I- "CAPTAAAAAAAAIN!!!" ---- ---- (Every time, I wake up with the snow still crunching beneath my boots, with the winter's chill still running down my spine, with my heartbeat still pounding through my ears.) (Every time, as I calm myself down, feeling the weight of those past years on my shoulders, and my bedsheets soaked straight through with sweat, I still hear myself screaming my captain's name, hoping against hope that he can still be saved....) (... and every time, I remember that there is no longer anything I can do for him.) [Maria] ... a dream, huh. Again... of that time... (WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP) [Maria] ... the enemy?! [Maria] Ch'... it's just one bad thing after another... INTO THE LAUNDRY CHUTES! [Sumire] No... Maria-san isn't here yet. ... actually, I think it might have more to do with the fact that Maria doesn't seem to wear anything when she sleeps, which, assuming she doesn't want to dash around the theater buck naked, makes it inconvenient for her to run all the way to the chutes at a moment's notice. TO-GA, TO-GA, TO-GA- ---- [Yoneda] We've received word from civilians that the Hive of Darkness' demon-driven mechanical soldiers have appeared in Tsukiji. [Sakura] Tsukiji... is it. [Ayame] The demon-driven mechanical soldiers were seen at an abandoned town, which is near the mouth of a river. It does not appear that the local inhabitants will be endangered, but in order to prevent any disorder from breaking out, it will be necessary to alleviate the situation. [Ogami] I see... understood. ---- [Ayame] ... Ogami-kun, what did I just say? [Ogami] ... really big words which just sorta mean "kill everything in sight"? [Ayame] ... close enough. Just get to it, will you? ---- [Ogami] Yessir! Alright, everyone! Let's show them the strength of the fully-assembled Imperial Assault Force! ---- [Ogami] And by "fully-assembled," I mean "everyone but Iris." [Ogami] ... again. [Ogami] ... as usual, actually. Kohran, why doesn't Iris have a Koubu yet? [Kohran] Weirdest thing, Ogami-han. Her spirit energy readings keep goin' up into numbers partially fused with infinity, and we're having a devil of a time findin' the kinda limiter for her engine that can handle somethin' like that. [Ogami] ... d... doesn't that strike you as weird, Kohran? [Kohran] Not really! I mean, Sakura's numbers've recently started spikin' around the same range, and look at her! She's doin' jes' fine! Right, Sakura-han? [Sakura] WHAT'S THAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF POWER OVERWHELMING. [Kohran] See? Nothin' to worry 'bout. [Sakura] I CAN KILL WITH ALL THE COLORS OF THE WIND!! [Ogami] ... Kohran, does our insurance cover death by teammate? [Kohran] Only one way to find out! Right, Ogami-han? ---- [Ogami] Imperial Assault Force, Flower Division, go forth! Our target destination is Tsukiji! [Everyone] Understood! We don't need no stinkin' robots to fight. WE'LL LAUNCH! ON FOOT. * Courtesy of Web U.R.C. Pretty much the entire site's NSFW. NEXT TIME: We've got the chapter's battle already? Gosh, this must be the shortest chapter in the game! Spirit Armor fucked around with this message at 05:45 on Apr 7, 2013 |

I think I can see where they're going with this... Just a hunch, though. (Spoilered in case I got it right) I get the feeling this will involve dead mentors being brought back as the power source for a giant robot and brainwashed as the level boss. Possibly even with the standard scene where he regains control over himself long enough to tell Maria to put him out of his misery. Don't tell me if I'm right. Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.

This thread has a distinct lack of you suffering of late. To that end I am changing my vote from Sumire to Iris.

Update! The cuteness of this pic is tempered by the identity of the person holding Chibi-Maria. Kanna X Maria seems to be a very popular fanfic pairing. Also remember the cameo of another Kosuke Fujishima character appearing in this chapter I told you about, Spirit Armor? --------------------------------------- Nakajima?!! Yes, Maria's brother is actually the unassuming lovelorn Ken Nakajima from You're Under Arrest! Me and my friend who was watching the clip with me at the time literally screamed in outrage and hilarity. Quite a clever cameo; who would have thought Nakajima's ancestor from way back would end up meeting a lovely end faceplanting himself into the cold russian snow? At least with his death it paved the way for Ohgami's ascension to her hot sister.

. . . I'm sorry. That was obviously supposed to be very emotional. But you know how in Kingdom Hearts Goofy is captain of the guard at Castle Disney? Yeah, he gets picked off and Donald runs at him screaming "Taichouuuuuuu!" in a voice that is exactly what Donald Duck would sound like if he were Japanese. I don't know how they did it, but they did. Fortunately it was a headshot and as we all know Goofy's head is mostly ornamental. So this is kind of ruining the moment for me. I'm sorry.

Nakajima was RUSSIAN? Explains a lot. They don't grow men that tall in Japan. At this rate there's going to be a hilarious cameo by a certain trio of Norse goddesses.

And now we know why Ogami's captain instead of Maria. It's all because of his degree in Changing One's Pants!

So wait, that's a fully grown Kanna holding a baby/toddler aged Maria? I was about to say JAPAN but instead I'll say CREEPY FANS THE WORLD OVER!

I thought I recognized that face. I saw the first episode of the new YUA series last week, but that was actually a rather neat cameo. What would be more hilarious really if you suddenly saw either Belldandy or Urd in a cutscene/in the background while playing.
