I'm in the market for my first Miata. I don't care very much about it being the best possible Miata, as long as it's in good shape, reliable, red, and most importantly, in my possession in time to take it to the beach this summer. I'll autocross it a little, if I can find the time, but it'll be my first autocross experience and I'm not really doing it to be competitive, so I don't care how it stacks up against other Miatas.

There was an NB2 I was looking at, but it vanished within a day or so. Now I'm considering this NC1:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ctd/d/san-leandro-2007-mazda-miata-mx-5/6878594996.html

I've been Googling, and it seems like people think bad things about NCs, and specifically NC1s. Should I give a poo poo, or should I buy this red convertible and drive it through the twisty roads in the woods to the beach?

I've got test drives scheduled with an NB and this NC tomorrow! I test drove an ND already and loved it, but I want to start cheaper than that.

Also, to be clear, there are things that won't be obvious from a test drive, or even a PPI. I recognize that the internet is full of information, but I also trust AI opinions over outside ones, so I wanted to ask in here, too.

Just bought my first Miata: an ‘04 PS with the sport package, bone stock. I wanted red, but compromised on color because it was a great price and otherwise exactly what I wanted. It’s a little ratty, but mechanically solid. I can’t wait to spend some summer weekends driving this thing through twisties in the woods on the way to the beach.

I’m getting the belts replaced, fluids done, and since the front rotors are almost toast, gonna get the brakes done, too. Hopefully I can drive it for the rest of the summer trouble-free after that.

In other news, my 95M with burned through clearcoat and what used to be merlot mica paint is being repainted by me. In Porsche's Miami Blue. I don't care for maroon in the first place, and there are tons of MM miatas out there so I don't feel bad about losing the unique color. Frankly I'm happy I'll have a car in a color I like with a factory torsen. Every time I see that Miami blue I swoon a bit, and it's much more motivating to see a color I like instead of a color I don't care about or 'it looks really nice and fits the time period the car was made'. I don't have to talk myself into liking this:

:allears:

That is a sweet color. If I get attached enough to my white NB, I might think about repainting it. The color is way too boring for a Miata. How much is it going to cost you?

Anyone going to the Miata Reunion at Laguna Seca on Oct 11th-12th? I’m thinking about driving down, mainly so I can do one of the parade laps on the track. Has anyone gone before? Is it worth the hassle?

I’m missing 2nd-3rd shifts in my NB when I drive fast. I assumed that the problem is I’m a bad idiot person, and I’m not ruling that out, but I’m also reading that this may be a symptom of failing motor mounts. If that turns out to be true, is there any reason not to spend $15 extra for stiffer MazdaSpeed mounts?

AFAIK, my car’s bone stock, and I don’t have any plans for power upgrades. I do like to drive it hard, though, and I’ll autocross it a bit, so my first thought is “why not?” But I’m old and stiff and fat, too, so if it’ll make the car less enjoyable day to day, it’s probably not worth it. Will it make any meaningful difference in ride quality?

I've never run the Mazda speed comp mounts but supermiata and flying Miata both say the'll stiffen things up by 30% or so but on the flip side they'll stay stiff for roughly a year (milage not specified) so take that as you will. You'll most definitely notice an NHV increase.

Huh. Reviews on Flyin Miata are super positive. I think I’ll give them a shot.

I opened up my NB2’s center console last weekend. One of the screws is located beneath the window switches, so you’re supposed to pop them loose with a screwdriver. I had to use a ton of force to pop mine out, and when they came loose, I found out why.

I assumed some idiot PO poured an entire loving Big Gulp down through the switches, so I went looking for used replacements on eBay and the ones I found seemed to have the same sticky brown goop leaking from them. Is this a normal thing?

I had to crack the plastic housing to break it loose, so I’d like to replace it, but not if it’s going to happen all over again the next time.

Edit: on looking at the photo again, it appears that whatever sludge had glued the lip of the switch housing to the console might not be the same sludge as what's leaking out of the switch housing. Was it possibly just really loving dirty at one point? The stuff on the lip looked more like regular dirt, and the stuff beneath was more like dried soda or something. Or maybe the stuff higher up was the same and had just gotten more dirt rubbed into it over the years.

Let me know how it goes! I've been debating making the switch myself as well.

To follow up on this, my mechanic (a Miata specialist) told me I should start by rebuilding the shifter, so I picked up a shifter rebuild kit for sale on Moss Miata this week. I'm planning to throw it in there next week. Hopefully it solves the issue more cheaply than replacing the motor mounts, but that'll be the next step.

Contact cleaner for the switches, all purpose cleaner and elbow grease for the goop. I'd try that before buying a replacement.

I was able to scrub it out and reinstall, but I chipped the edge of the housing, and visually, it bugs me. It's just an aesthetic thing. I'm giving it a while to see if it stops bothering me. But I'm wondering if this is just a dumb PO thing or if it's a known issue for these things to leak sludge. I'm assuming the former, and Google doesn't tell me otherwise, but I'd hate to buy a replacement part and have the same thing happen again.

My NB's got a flat tire. Obviously, the only possible solution is to get a full set of wheels and new tires. I'm thinking about RPF1s, but Konig Hypergrams also look pretty cool for like eighty bucks cheaper per wheel. What's a good 15x7 wheel/tire combo for a stock NB that will see 90% street use and (hopefully, post-COVID) a little autocross? PS4S for tires?

Steely Dad
Jul 29, 2006

I'm definitely more interested in street driving experience than pure grip. There's no way I'm going to be competitive in any autocross class, anyway.

Welp. After twelve years and 120,000 miles of valiant service, my battery has succumbed to the cold temperatures and the fact that I only drive my poor Miata 20 minutes a week. I'm going to grab an AGM replacement, I think. The only thing I can find anywhere near me is a Super Start Platinum from O'Reilly, so I guess that will have to do. I don't see any horror stories online anywhere and it sounds like most AGM batteries are made by the same few companies and just rebranded and sold?

I just put one of those in my NB, replacing the one the PO had put in at the end of 2018. It probably won’t be 12 more years before you head back to O’Reilly’s, but yeah, they’re all the same batteries these days, so what else can you do?

Steely Dad

I’d definitely rather have paid more for a better battery. Maybe I’ll try that after this O’Reilly’s special dies and its warranty replacement also dies. Winter after next, I guess.

15x8 Storm S1s with 205 conti ECS's mounted and balanced were 1K shipped last summer from fitment industries (lol) - was a great deal, too bad the tech mounted a tire with the wheel tag and elastic inside, causing a slow leak at the bead.

I just had the shittiest experience with Fitment. I was going to order basically that exact setup, but saw the Storms were backordered on the website. I called in to check on the timeline, and the dude was like "yep, just checked, and they're in stock, I can take your order over the phone, and we'll have them to you in two weeks." So I bought over the phone. The dude misspelled my name (which I spelled out for him, because it's a less common spelling), so I didn't get an email receipt. I kept calling them back every two weeks and they assured me they'd fix it and email me the receipt and it never showed.

So six weeks later, a set of Raceline Storms shows up at my door. I call them back and they spend two more weeks getting "leadership approval" and chasing down the actual recording of the guy loving up, every single customer service person apparently unaware of the history that I've explained repeatedly. Finally they agree to refund me, the first shipping appointment gets blown off, the second time, the wheels get picked up, and two weeks later I have to follow up. "Oh, they got put in the wrong warehouse." I just finally got my refund on wheels I ordered in December.

Dude kept trying to convince me to re-order with them instead of taking the refund. Meanwhile I went and got a set of Hypergrams with ECSes on them from America's Tire, took a week for them to come in and they put the shits on the car for me.

I started to lol and then I did the math and realized I'm about 12k into a 4.5k Miata and the only performance upgrade I've made is wheels and tires , and it hasn't been repainted and the seats need to be reupholstered or replaced

Pretty good rate of return, though, it's easily a 6k Miata now

4.5k Miata
2k in catching up on PO’s deferred maintenance
3k to fix it after I slid it into a guardrail
1k in misc poo poo (replacement headlight, mostly, but also shifter rebuild and motor mounts and whatever)
1k in wheels and tires

Really it was wrecking the thing that hosed up the numbers

I've got a 2004 LS that is basically stock except wheels and tires. About 110k miles. I mostly street drive it, with an autocross here and there. I love the car as is, and haven't really thought about changing anything about it, performance-wise. I'm perfectly fine banging through gears like a madman while minivans pass me.

The struts are starting to leak, and the boots are cracking on the front ball joints and outer tie rod ends. I'm assuming for the boots I'm just going to get those replaced with OEM or OEM-equivalent poo poo, but if I'm replacing the struts, should I be considering any kinds of shock/strut upgrades? What I'm most worried about is changing the character of the car; I'm actually on the fence about the ExtremeContacts I put on it because they're just so damned grippy that it's hard to slide the car around corners. My gut feeling is that I should just replace the struts with something OEM-like, but I wanted to ask here in case I'm overlooking an opportunity to make the car better in a way that won't make it less fun.
