The NA and the NB are similar but they added/changed a lot of things in the NB to overall make the car more comfortable. You "feel the road" a lot less. That being a good or bad thing is up to you, really.

When you say you feel the road a lot less in the NB, are we talking about not feeling every little bump and pebble you run over but still well-connected, or like driving around in a numb luxobarge (or somewhere between the two)? I'm (hopefully) going to be in the market for a Miata in the next year or two and have been leaning towards a late-model NB...

I was under the impression that wheel bearing failure would sound different when turning.

A worn bearing generally makes more noise when its on the opposite side of the turn as the car's weight shifts. The last time I had to do one on my Focus I caught it early and when I turned left the noise would disappear completely.

Of course this doesn't apply if its already totally hosed and well beyond the "just starting to go" stage...but you can usually hear those over everything else.

Its going to depend on how bad the clutch is but generally speaking anything other than the engine bogging down when you push on the gas pedal is pointing towards your clutch being dead. If it goes up 500 RPM and back down again it either means the clutch is just starting its death spiral or you're leaking brake fluid into the bellhousing.

For reference, when I had to replace the clutch in my Focus I'd drop into 5th at 30 MPH and mash the gas and it might as well have been in neutral.

Tell me about NC Miatas.

Mainly, is the five speed transmission better than the six speed manual like I've been reading? Most of what I've seen is the six speed's ratios aren't well spaced and in the upper gears you see a minimal drop in RPMs between shifts. Also I read that the six speed is the only way to get a factory LSD...does this mean any NC with the six speed manual has a LSD or was it optional?

(Yes I'm thinking about buying a used NC in the somewhat near future...)

I think I saw you were looking at a S2000 to replace it but I don't think it would be terribly expensive to replace the airbags - assuming that's all that's wrong with it. I smashed the front end of my Focus about a year and a half ago hitting a deer and deployed both airbags and got replacements at the junkyard for $350 (including the control module) v0v

It's easy to do the wrenching, but all of those alternative headlight kits are out of production and expensive. Probably $200-$400 for a used kit. If you're looking for better lighting get a set of Hella E-Code reflector housings and put 80/100 bulbs in it.

There's also this: http://www.discountfleetsupply.com/tlc27250c-p.html

A bit spendy, but if you look at how much a set of properly retrofitted HIDs will cost you its really not that high.

I'm a big lighting nerd and if I had anything that used 7" round headlights I would have a pair of those.

Take the weight of the car, divide by 16. This is the weight that is riding on each individual lug. Divide by three, this is the extra weight that the remaining lugs will pick up. Granted the numbers will be higher as you're cornering, but as long as you're not flogging the car you should be fine to, say, drive to a parts store to pick up a replacement.

This is the brightest 1156 I was able to find there at least. http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/tail-brake-turn/led-product/526/

In my experience with LED replacement bulbs the main issue is similar to doing HID in a halogen housing - the reflector is designed around the bulb. Often this results in poor output even with a ridiculously bright LED cluster because the light isn't hitting the right parts of the housing. This is amplified if the bulb enters the housing at an angle as many cluster LED bulbs have the majority of their output going straight out the end.

I've been eying a pair of the 12w bulbs at the top of this page http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm for my Focus's reverse lights but haven't been able to justify $50 on bulbs that may not work out.

But there are install kits that include a new bezel that looks the same except they cut a double-DIN hole and a storage pocket so you use single-DIN, so it shouldn't look any worse than an aftermarket radio in any other car.

The reason the Auxmod is attractive is the install kits that cover the HVAC controls are prohibitively expensive. Sure, you can get an aftermarket headunit for $60 that gives you auxiliary in and/or bluetooth but then you also have to buy a $100 (or more) dash adapter to make it fit.

e: well it looks like the NC Miata has a normal enough dash that the adapter kits aren't horribly expensive, but that was the reason I went with the Auxmod for my wife's first-gen 6. Dash adapters were $150+ in 2009 when I installed it and have only gone up in price since.

Have you been pulled over for not having a front plate? I live in a two plate state (Ohio) and have been driving for the better part of 10 years without a front plate. I've been stopped by law enforcement maybe a dozen or so times in that timespan and never once had any of them say poo poo about it, much less cite me for it. A lot of law enforcement view it as busy work and won't write the ticket unless you give them a reason to, and most of the time on your first offense you'll just get a fix-it ticket.

Unless you get incredibly lucky with something that turns into a highly sought after collector's item 20+ years down the road cars are a terrible investment.
