I honestly don't mind the stock suspension that much. I just want something a little more stiff and lower. Is just buying lowering springs a bad idea?

I was looking into something like this also but I'm not sure if this is a bad idea or not. http://www.mossmiata.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=119467&SortOrder=4 I assume that I could just slap them on the stock suspension.

Is this worth the price that he's asking for a hard top in that condition?

I'm about to go buy these wheels. http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/wto/5263353850.html I drive an NB. Think I can fit 1 in the trunk and 3 in the passenger seat with the top up?

Managed to do it with 2 in the front seat, one in the deck, and one in the trunk. Couldn't put the top down but luckily it didn't start raining until the last 5 minutes.

I'd like to be able to order something today if possible. I was told that BC coilovers were pretty good for the price but that was from an unreliable source.

Partial Octopus

The value clutch kit from Mazdaspeed/Rosenthal is a decent replacement. Comes with new PP, clutch, pilot & throwout, and the alignment tool. It was ~100 or so.

As for a slave, just find whatever's on sale. They're all $20-30. Do buy a stainless clutch line though, $45 and it eliminates a lot of frustration.

What site sells them?

I did the timing on my car last week and everything seemed alright. Drove about 600~ miles since then and this morning I got a code saying that the camshaft position timing is over-retarded. Is this just due to the belt breaking in? Is it alright to drive like this for another few hundred miles? The car seems to be running fine.

Do whatever TireRack tells you to get. I like to go -1 wheel size if it's possible to fit over the brakes, gives you a little more sidewall to cushion frozen ruts and the like.

I tried that but the smallest and cheapest wheel it's showing is this 16 inch wheel: http://tinyurl.com/h2quae2 for $97.

I thought I could fit 15 inch steelies for a lot cheaper but it's not showing up on the website.

Partial Octopus

It is an NB2. Do you think I could go as low as 14x6? They're way less expensive than the 16 or 15 options.

I just checked the brochure for the 2002 model. Theres no difference with the brakes between the standard and LS versions so I don't see why the 14 inch wheels shouldn't fit. Must just have to do with tire racks website.

15" Koseis cleared the sport calipers on my 02 LS so I'd imagine they'll clear NB2 calipers without issues too.

I have a spare set of 14" Miata rims with xice snows for a Miata, they just barely didn't clear the calipers for my car. If you want to drive to Boston, we can try test mounting them and if they fit you can have them for super cheap.

I also have stock 16s with Toyo snows mounted on the car which will definitely fit. If you have some crappy wheels you don't mind parting ways with so I can still roll my car around, we can work something out on a swap for those.

Did you have the stock calipers?

I'm just trying to find out the fastest and cheapest way I can get into snow tires. Driving to Boston is a little too far for me but thanks for the offer. Tire Rack can get me a set of steelies with Dunlop Winter Max's for 400 which is pretty solid.

02 LS had a sport suspension option which included slightly larger brakes, which my car had. NB2s had those brakes standard, 14"s don't clear the caliper by like 5mm.

I don't think my 02 has the sport suspension option but aren't all 02's and above NB2s? I guess I'll just be safe and get 15's.

Atomizer posted:

I can help you. I ran into the same situation with my 05. It was something like 15" rims would fit on my MSM, which has the sport brakes, but it's a tight fit and the weights need to be mounted specifically to give enough clearance. I went into more detail in this thread, search my post history from around May-ish. I spoke with the Miata specialist Rudy at Tirerack (listed here: http://www.tirerack.com/content/tirerack/desktop/en/customer_support/sales_contact.html) who explained all of this. You can order whatever rims/tires you want, but for a situation like this he wants to make clear the fitting situation; if you're mounting & balancing the wheels yourself then you have to set the weights appropriately, otherwise if Tirerack is doing it (and you might as well have them do so, it's free if you're buying a full set of wheels) he makes sure it's done appropriately. When I placed the order with him he actually had to order it for an NA because even their reps can't force the system to accept any wheel combination for any vehicle (their ordering system makes you specify a vehicle to try to prevent fitting issues in the first place to avoid expensive returns/exchanges.)

Now while my Kosei K1-TS fit perfectly, it is possible that whatever 15" rims you were looking at might not fit due to the inner dimensions. That means that realistically your only way to be certain of fitting is to pick up a phone and call Rudy @ Tirerack! (Or e-mail him!)

Here is a scan of the brochure courtesy of miata.net:

Note the different standard rim sizes for standard vs. LS in the "exterior features" section, and then the "Brakes" listing at the bottom of the "Specifications" section the next column over. Your LS came standard with 16" rims, and with that slightly larger brakes. So yes, your car could run 15" rims (and I highly recommend it) but nearly certainly not 14" rims, and the slightly larger brakes make fitting 15s slightly more difficult. Call Rudy, dude.

Thank you! That cleared up everything. I will call Rudy first thing tomorrow.

So about 1.5k miles after changing my belt I noticed that every 5 minutes or so my engine will chirp and bog down for like a fraction of a second. Could the timing be off due to the belt breaking in or is this unrelated?

Partial Octopus

Doesn't chirping normally come from belts? I have no idea what else could be causing this.

So I've been faced with a really tough decision and I was hoping you guys could give me some input.

So I have a '02 1.8 NB with LSD and 110000 miles. It is my daily driver. Since I moved to Philly the car has been in numerous hit and runs and now looks like a turd. It is in need of a new front bumper, rear bumper, right door panel, and rear quarter panel. These were all separate incidents and each one is a $500 insurance deductible to get it fixed. The car also needs it's AC to be fixed as well as a transmission rebuild as the 2nd gear synchro is going. The top is also due for a replacement sometime soon. Since I've had the car I have replaced the engine gaskets as well as put in a new clutch and OEM suspension. I have also done the timing belt. Interior is in fine condition except for the driver's seat which has a rip in the leather.

I recently found a really good deal on a new '17 Fiesta ST as my cousin works at a dealership. Have you guys driven the Fiesta? How do you think it compares to the Miata? Do you think it is a good financial decision to dump all this money back into the NB to get it looking respectable?

Obviously, the practically is a huge plus but I feel like I will really miss the drop top as well as the low ride height of the Miata. What would you guys do?

Partial Octopus

So I'm looking to replace the torn up leather seats in my NB. I'd like to get something with way more bolstering. I use the car for daily driving and autocross.

Do you guys have any recommendations? I love the look of Brides of course but I'd rather not spend 2 grand on seats.

I'm about to sell my 2002 1.8 Miata. 106k miles. Engine is in good condition. AC doesn't work. Some scratches and dents, large dent on the rear quarter panel on the passenger side. Roll bar. It also has a 2 small holes in the top. Drivers seat has leather that is starting to rip.

Any advice on what a good asking price is?

Also I'm selling it in Philly so if any of you guys are interested let me know.

2002, 1.8l Miata, LSD, 106k miles, new clutch, new oem suspension, new timing belt, hard dog roll bar. AC doesn't work, not sure why. Top has 1 small hole and one small tear in it.

I could have the rear quarter panel be replaced by my insurance for $500 but I imagine it isn't worth it.
