Also consider that you lose like two thirds of your trunk space when you go with the RF.

I picked up an ND 2 at the beginning of December. I took it on a bit of a road trip this week and hit up Skyline Drive in Virginia on Christmas eve. I think in the 3 hours I was driving on that road I only saw one other car. It was incredible. Easily the most fun drive I've been on.

Unfortunately, I also learned that driving a car with stock brake pads down a 3000 ft mountain at like 9/10ths is a great way to glaze your brake pads.
Anyone have a good recommendation for a replacement/upgrade for the factory Brembos?

Also, is it a bad idea to just upgrade the front pads and keep the rear stock? Will that have a large impact on the brake bias?

I was in 3rd most of the time but I was definitely charging corners a bit too hard. It was fine for awhile, then I started to smell the pads... and then the brakes did pretty much nothing even when standing on them. I haven't actually taken the wheels off yet and checked the pads but I assume they're toast. I checked the brake fluid levels and they're fine. IDK if they possibly just need to be bled though. The brake pedal feels pretty soft and I can't modulate the brakes very much at all. So I'm not sure if I actually glazed the pads or if there is just air in the line.

I've never ran into this issue before so I'm not sure what things I should be checking first.

Awesome. Thanks for the replies. I'll get it flushed and put some RBF600 in it.

I just installed the flyin' miata fox coilovers in my ND2 and hooooly poo poo they are amazing. I can not recommend them enough. All of the body roll is completely eliminated and the car feels so much more composed. They're also still very compliant. Super comfortable on the highway and poor quality roads.

I lowered mine by like an inch but you should be able to keep ride height similar stock. I didn't do sways as the FM sways didn't seem all that much beefier than the stock ones. For what it's worth, I also had the club model and they are a pretty massive upgrade over the Bilsteins.

I'm moving from Philly to Denver this weekend. I managed to fit all my essential belongings into my Miata.

Who says Miatas aren't practical? :toot:

I would love to go on a club ride. Which organization are you a part of?

Yeah it's the 1up single. I decided to ship my bikes instead of taking them with me. I figured it was worth paying the $60 for shipping as opposed to having someone steal my mountain bike while I'm eating some rest stop hamburger.

I'd be down to meet up just to go for a weekend drive regardless of the club. I'd love for someone to show me where all the best roads are.

So while I was driving today a rock hit my tow hook cover and it went flying off into the sky. Do I need to bother getting a replacement part color matched or do you think I'd be safe just ordering a pre-painted one online? The car is pretty new, idk if color matching is just for older sun-bleached cars or just for paints they don't make anymore.

So the stock Brembos on the ND2 are trash. I have Porterfield R4S pads in them and even if I stand on the brakes I can't get ABS to activate half time time. I want to upgrade to something more powerful that won't possibly kill me in the canyons.

What do you guys think about the Flyin' Miata little big brake kit and big brake kits? Is the big brake kit overkill for the street?

I just had the brakes bled it seemed to help a bit but not fix the issue completely. I'm coming from a BRZ which felt like it had much stronger brakes than this car.

The issue I'm running into is that the brakes feel fine for moderate breaking pressure. But there have been a few times where I'm going a bit too fast downhill and I stand on the brakes, I figure it would lock up the wheels and engage abs, but instead nothing locks up and I just feel like I'm not stopping fast enough. I'm not trying to engage ABS at every corner but I just don't feel confident in how fast I'm able to stop the car in an emergency. Maybe it's just the stock tires not gripping? I know the cars only 2300 pounds but shouldn't I be able to threshold brake/lock up the tires at will just by standing on the brakes?

Partial Octopus

I'm just trying to put into words what I'm noticing when I'm braking. Is it normal to not have enough braking force to lock up tires? I'm not a track driver and I haven't driven a ton of different cars.

I did another bleed and it actually made a pretty significant difference. The brakes feel much better now. ABS is also working fine. It's definitely way more subtle in the ND than it was in other cars I've driven.

Anyone wanna take a guess at what's wrong with my ND before I take it to the dealer?

Driving back from the canyons today an issue started. At low speeds I hear a loud clunking at the rear right wheel. The sound increases with wheel speed. At higher speeds the sound turns into more of a high pitched screeching sound. The sound is louder when transitioning from braking to acceleration or vice versa. The sound also gets louder when cornering. The rotors look completely fine. I also can't see anything visibly wrong with anything. I haven't had a chance to jack up the car yet to have a better look though.

The car only has 10k miles on it so I'm not sure what it could be. I also didn't hit any potholes while driving. I have aftermarket suspension as well.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking it's a wheel bearing as well. I actually just raised the ride height. It's only about an inch lower than stock. I plan on getting it into a dealer this weekend if I can. A bit worried they might blame whatever is wrong on the suspension though...

You guys were right about the lug nuts. One of them was completely missing. I'm guessing the shop I had it at didn't tighten them properly. The others seemed adequately tight and the wheel was firm against the hub. I'm curious if the dealer will find any other issues.

I need help picking out new wheels for my ceramic ND.

Kinda digging the polished one but I'm worried it will look like poo poo once it gets some brake dust on it.

The polished one is nearly a pound lighter too.

Ended up going with the grey. Thanks for the input.

What tires do you guys recommend? I mostly just drive in the canyons and plan on doing some beginner level track days next year. I was thinking of trying the Conti ECS but I'm not sure if they're worth using over the PS4S. I've also used RE71R on my old cars strictly for autox but I imagine that is overkill for street driving.

The car isn't a daily driver.

It shouldn't be that hard. Lots of people want the Recaros but don't want to pay the insane price to buy them from a dealer. I think the average going price on forums for them is around $2k each. I'm sure if you post on miata.net you could find someone who would take them off your hands.

Is the stock cooling in the ND2 sufficient for track days or should I invest in an oil cooler if I plan on doing them frequently?

Partial Octopus
Feb 4, 2006

There's some heat exchanger that works between the oil and the coolant but I'm not sure how effective it is at actually cooling anything. From what I gathered it was mostly to have the oil get up to temp more quickly.

Got some new pads for the Brembos and I can not for the life of me get these things in there.

The issue isn't the width but the height. They seem to be too tall which is odd. I measured them and GWR told me that they match the pads they have.

Here's them compared to my old ones.

It seems to be getting stuck on that square bit at the top of the caliper.

You can see here where it's hitting it. This is from me gently tapping it with a mallet.

Am I missing something dumb here?

Partial Octopus
Feb 4, 2006

They are retracted. Also the issue isn't them being retracted enough. It's the height that seems to be the limiting factor.

Anyone here interested in buying a low mileage track prepped ND2?

I've had some recent changes in my life and owning two cars is a bit impractical for me right now. As much as it saddens me to sell it I think it's the right thing to do.

Does anyone have advice on what the best way to go about this would be? I'm not sure if I should try to sell it whole or part it out and revert it to stock. I don't have a great space to work on it so I may have to pay to get it reverted back to stock unfortunately.

The car has the following:

2019 ND2 Club Recaro package with the Brembos and BBS wheels. Ceramic Metallic.
Flyin' Miata Fox suspension
Hard Dog Roll Bar
Konigg Hypergram 17x8 with new Conti ECS
Porterfield RS Pads, also new
Flyin' Miata lightweight hideaway hitch.

Was thinking of asking $29k which is around the top end of KBB.

Virgil Vox posted:

Can afford the car but if you don’t mind I’d like to ask:

Did you install the roll bar yourself? How was that process?

Do the 17x8s need a fender roll with being lowered and like -2 camber? Do they rub control arms or that plastic fender liner?

(Might be interested in wheels and hitch if you do part)

Thank you!

I had a Miata specialist shop install the roll bar. I'm too lazy and scared to spend 8 hours tearing apart the car to do it myself.
The 17x8's didn't need a fender roll. The car is lowered though but not a crazy amount. Running -1.8 camber all around. No rub or anything like that. I believe GWR said you can run it on stock suspension without issues though.
