Old Town Road to EGOT

I'm finally listening to this new God Is An Astronaut in full and it feels like they haven't been able to come up with a good/original idea in years so they're just repeating themselves at this point. I'll probably forget I even listened to this by tomorrow.

Their first decade or so of output was extraordinary & will never stop being great, but maybe it's time for them to hang it up. In high school, I couldn't shut up to anyone who would listen about how great and revolutionary they were, but I can't see myself recommending this album to anyone. They've made such better/more interesting music in the past that this just pales in comparison so much.

It bums me out because they seriously used to be one of my favorite bands of all and now they aren't even on that list for me anymore. Oh well, times change I guess.

God is an Astronaut is one of the few big post rock bands I've barely touched really, even though I loved them when I saw them last year. What's the definitive album?

I don't know that I'd say they have one definitive album, but their first 4 albums are all classics in my mind.

They just had so many loving great songs in a short period of time, then it seemed like they really didn't after that.

I remember Age of the Fifth Sun had this dope-rear end post-metal-ish track on it that seemed to be signaling a new direction for the band, but I don't think they ever really expanded on it after that. Or maybe they did. I don't even remember. If they did, it wasn't very memorable for me. But this new album definitely ain't a post-metal album, at least.

Ever present.
Being Irish, I have no idea how God is an Astronaut don't have the same level of success and critical acclaim anyone else from here who makes music seems to get.

Someone needs to hire them to make a movie soundtrack.

I believe they were hired for a game soundtrack but it seems to have died in production hell.

GIAA has always been weird for me because it is really technically competent music that sounds incredibly good... I just don't find it all that interesting after the nth or so listen. I did have a phase with them for a while though, with their self-titled release being the peak.

Yeah the new GIAA was super weird. The production was a big downer for me.. it felt like 90% of the album was low pass filtered or something?
Like..skip to the middle of 'Seance Room', compare that to any guitar part off Helios Erebus or the older albums.

The songwriting was really similar to Helios Erebus too. Really underwhelming for such a great band :[

Maybe it's bad karma from using axeFX?

I don't know if this is considered post-rock, but I came across this band and I liked this album enough to pick it up and their other one. I like the eclectic instrumentation and just general cheeriness to the songs. Sounds like a great album for spring/summer:

Human Pyramids are a loving joy. They're spun off from Axes (totally worth your time), and by spun off from I mean it's Axes with like ten more members. They have the record at ArcTanGent for most musicians on stage with 20+.

Vessels before they completely changed genre plus 3... I can’t remember. I wanna say they were the support but it was ten years ago.

when i saw Polyphonic Spree they definitely had more than 20, unless choir singers are not considered musicians, in which case yeah i guess they only had about 12 people playing instruments

Generally the fewer members a band has, the louder they play to compensate

Yesterday I learned that they had several music videos done for some of their earlier stuff. Very cool, but the quality is a bit shite.

Yeah so I'm gonna have to disagree hard that Epitaph is a bad album in any way. Right now it's probably my second favorite album of theirs. "Epitaph" and "Mortal Coil" especially are phenomenal.

Their last album came out like 5 years ago. It was a surprising/welcome return to form after their previous album kinda veered off from how they used to be. But yeah, they've been pretty quiet the past few years.

I'm reasonably certain I met the guy they recorded on BBF3, at the 2000 poetry slam nationals in Providence. I mean, if it wasn't him, it was someone who was doing literally the exact same thing, he did an open mic where he did the lyrics to "Virus" and then hung around talking to any poets who would listen. He looked exactly like you imagine he would.

El Ten Eleven has a new album on the way and they released the first single from it called Phenomenal Problems.

Unsurprisingly, it's rad as hell.

It always astounds me what a rich, full sound they're able to get from just being a band of 2 people :allears:
