I love all things Mogwai, they are my favorite post rock band. I would start off with Young Team or Mr. Beast honestly. Young Team is what got me into Mogwai and has some of their classics. Mr. Beast is all around accessible but does a nice job of showcasing the different songwriting styles Mogwai has evolved into over the years. I usually just put their entire catalog on random and listen as well.

GY!BE has added a new song to their set for this 2013 tour, I asked their projectionist Karl what it's called and he says it is currently titled "Behemoth." It's a long, long piece. They played it both nights in San Francisco, recordings have been uploaded at http://archive.org/details/gybe2013-09-09 and http://archive.org/details/gybe2013-09-10

They've played Behemoth in 2012 for a couple dates too. It's an awesome track, the beginning movement sort of reminds me of Earth

I quite like this album, even if it is a bit too short. However, I am really irritated by the drum flub on Deficit (at 4:33 if you're interested). The drummer is amazing, I can't understand why they didn't just re-record that bit.

Not sure if I'm hearing the same thing you are? are you talking about the drum fill because that sounds pretty intentional to me

Between "Praise Be Man" and now "Memorial", I want a whole album of slow/soft songs from them. The heavy stuff is still good but to be honest it feels a little predictable by now.

I agree it would cool to hear an entire album like Ethel/Xavii however I love the dynamic between soft/reverberant and heavy like in the slow part of 309 right before the dirty bass comes in.

Man the Heart That Fed sounds so good on vinyl. The bass is just so punchy

As far as complete Mogwai albums I'd have to go old school and say Mogwai Young Team is my favorite album although it does not contain my favorite Mogwai songs. There's just something about YT as a whole that does it for me

My frustration with Mogwai is always what goes on the album vs what is left off. Examples:

'Slight Domestic' (left off of 'Hardcore Will Never Die')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua-tqLd7yqk

'I Can't Remember' (left off of 'Young Team'.. I think)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ters5iEJA

'Close Encounters' (left off of 'Rock Action' which was hardly a long album and in need of less songs anyway)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHfKLIxgLU8

'Sad DC' (left off of 'Happy Songs for Happy People')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=andoKSsnmCY

But then I have always found myself liking b-sides more than most people. The single version of 'Christmas Steps' is vastly inferior to the album version though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65f3QbEci48

On a different subject, I enjoy the gently caress Buttons cover of 'Mogwai Fear Satan'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctqcYhEM1pM

You forgot one of the best b sides
"Dracula Family" from Hawk is Howling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ0ZXDl2KGI

I still stand by my thought that Mogwai are best listened to as a whole collection of songs rather than by album.

No love for You Don't Know Jesus? Also Rock Action gets better when you pair it with My Father, My King

Anyone looking to (still) get into Mogwai just listen to the Special Moves live disc. If none of those songs appeal to you, just give up.

I really dig the first track on the new Godspeed because it seems to go from deliberately unpleasant in the first 3 minutes to blissful and elegaic in such a subtle way that it took me a minute to realize the whole tone of the song was changed without changing the tempo or the overall sound... and that weirdly awkward guitar solo is brilliant but I don't know if it stands on its own. Like, I think you have to have listened to some other music to understand why they put this busted rear end and bad guitar solo right there. Unless Efrim (or whoever played it) actually does think it sounds good, well, it doesn't. Leave "playing very badly to sound good" to Sonic Youth or whatever band of 20 year olds is hot these days.

I don't like the two long ambient drones in the middle. They seem designed to punish the listener, or indulge someone's very stoned vision, or both. And I listen to a lot of boring ambient drone music, but here it just gets in the way because it's not why you bought the record. But the thing is, like four or five members of the band are obviously super into the tape loop thing and that's why half the band hated Yanqui UXO and they broke up, because Godspeed the orchestral rocking choir and Godspeed the tape loop band really are two totally different projects that insist on being roommates,

Pretty sure that is a bass solo which is why it sounds so distorted and "bad". I think the two drone tracks work better if you consider the whole album as a whole movement rather than individual parts. That said, I wish they did add a bit more to the drone tracks than what they had played live but I still like the album as whole regardless.

This new Mogwai album isn't doing a lot for me :(

I'm not liking the production. Everything sounds too boxed in, like nothing has room to breathe. They're using the same producer they used for Come On Die Young and Rock Action this time, but it's just not wowing me here.

Only a few tracks out of the 11 really stood out to me: 20 Size, the last couple minutes of Don't Believe the Fife, Old Poisons and the title track. But even on the standouts, the production brings them down. I'm sure seeing them live would own, but the studio versions are lacking. It's a shame because Old Poisons might legitimately be one of my favorite Mogwai songs period, but I wish someone else had produced it.

Honestly, I'll probably just listen to 20 Size and Old Poisons over and over again for years to come and forget the rest of the album exists, which is pretty much exactly the same case as Rave Tapes.

I'm loving the bagpipes in Battle at the Scramble. Honestly the best way I've found to listen to Mogwai is just to put their entire catalogue on shuffle and hit play.

Take from their FAQ

code:

WHAT IF I AM LATE? CAN I PAUSE OR REWIND THE STREAM?

If you are a little late joining the broadcast, don’t worry, you will be able to start it from the beginning after the performance starts, although this is subject to variation on the night, and you will be able to pause/rewind the show for up to 3 hours from the initial broadcast time.
