There's another Japanese band named Euphoria that you might like. I'm not too familiar with them but I believe the following track comes from their album "Silence in Everywhere" so if you like it then I guess you could check out that album first.

As well, another Japanese band called Lite that you might be interested in. I'd say they're closer to Toe or Te' than Miaou (haven't heard Mouse on the Keys so I can't judge that) but more on the technical side of things. Their latest full-length, Phantasia, is great and I highly recommend it.

From what I remember, one of the band members lives really far away from the other two so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a distance issue that caused it. At any rate, it's a shame, they were a fantastic band. I loved how well they integrated samples into their music.

I really liked ...And the Battle is Won and Embers had some great tracks on it as well (I highly recommend both of those albums) but I did not care for their latest release at all.

edit for content: I saw TheSilentBallet's review of Enemies - We've Been Talking and it caught my interest because they said they were similar to From Monument to Masses. I went to their myspace, listened to one track "Bits of Parrots" and fell in love right away. I really enjoyed ...And the Battle is Won and Embers but didn't care for Firewolf at all. I thought this track was okay, mainly up until the heavy part. Not that the heavy part was bad by any means but it feels like I've heard it many times before. Then again, I guess that's a pretty common thing for a genre like post-rock. Still, if the new album ends up being less like Firewolf and more like their other releases, then I will be happy.

http://thesilentballet.com/ has started doing their year-end feature and while I'm sure we could have a whole discussion about whether or not we agree with their rankings, the more important thing to me is how many great releases I've missed this year. I'm a fan of LITE and yet I had no idea they released an album this year. Same with The Applessed Cast, I really liked Sagarmatha so I'm excited to hear the Middle States EP. It will be a few more days until the entire list is up but I can't wait to see what else I've been missing out on.

I feel bad calling myself a post-rock enthusiast yet only having heard like 5 or 6 of the albums mentioned in this list. But then I think about all the releases Silent Ballet reviews and how only a handful of them at most are really worth checking out, and then I don't feel as bad anymore.

Well to be fair, that list isn't exclusively post-rock releases, there seem to be quite a few albums from ambient or electronic artists (as well as some stuff that falls under other sub-genres). So I imagine that even the biggest post-rock fans probably have never heard of a large number of artists on that list. Still, I felt the need to link to it because it was their 2005 year-end list that got me listening to post-rock so there may be some good releases on there that fit this thread.

I've found Johnnytwentythree, Joy Wants Eternity, Ef, Long Distance Calling, Destroyalldreamers and a few others through Silent Ballet that I really dig. But in my experience, there are more "meh" artists on there than real standouts, and looking up all the artists they recommend is weeding through a heap of unimpressive stuff to get to a gem here and there.

That makes sense. And now that they're covering a wider range of genres, it only makes it more difficult to sort through it all to find stuff that you're interested in.

But yeah, anyway, I finished listening to the new LITE album and I really enjoy it. If you've enjoyed their last few EPs (Turns Red and Illuminate) then you will certainly enjoy For All The Innocence.

According to their bandcamp page, if you pay $20 or more for this release, they'll e-mail you a link where you can download all 8 of their releases in MP3 format. Considering the fact that I've paid $20 for a single album before, and that I really like most (if not all) of The American Dollar's music, this is an absolute steal for me.

Edit: It appears that the link they sent me is just a big zip file with everything in it (about 976 MB). I'm not complaining, just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who has limited internet speed/bandwidth.

I agree with you Rageaholic Monkey, I listened to the album and while it's not bad, it's not very memorable to me either.

I didn't care for Age of the Fifth Sun, but I love Far From Refuge. I have no idea why I have never listened to their self-titled though, in fact I totally forgot it existed up until a few days ago when I was looking at their discography. I need to check it out, as well as revisiting their first album which didn't hook me when I first listened to it but maybe that will change.

I think this is from a show played October 10th, 1998, in Chicago at a venue called Scuba's. I found an archive.org listing for GY!BE's set of that night but it doesn't include the specific song you're looking for as that was the last song of Low's set.

https://archive.org/details/gybe1998-10-10

I've been trying to google around but I haven't had any luck finding a better quality version of it, sorry.

You'll probably want to check out bands that get labeled as "post-metal", seeing as how you already like Isis and Pelican, I think the next obvious recommendation is Russian Circles. Pretty much all of their stuff is good, you can start with their first album "Enter" and go forward from there.

I'd also recommend checking out Capricorns and Tides, they both play instrumental sludge that's really solid.

Gifts from Enola is another solid post-rock band that gets pretty heavy, I'd recommend checking out their first 2 full lengths and their split EP.

There are quite a few other Japanese bands that play a similar style to Te', some of my favorites are 3nd and Lite.

:yeah: They posted something similar a year or 2 ago and it got my hopes up but I'm still waiting. Such a tease!

Can anyone explain Boyle's pedalboard pic? I see 2 digitial delays (pretty sure I heard he uses more than that), a looper on the bottom left, 2 reverbs (boss + big sky), but I don't know what the others are. What's a Timeline? Which one is the distortion?

Strymon Timeline is a Delay (I'd say it's the Delay version of the Strymon BigSky reverb), Meris Enzo (the gold-ish pedal on the right of the Timeline) is kind of a synth-ish pedal as far as I know, the Friedman BE-OD is a distortion and the Hotcake is an overdrive. Not sure what about that black pedal in between those two. Eventide H9 (right of the Infinity 3 Looper) is a multi-effects pedal if I understand it correctly.

I think the Morningstar MC6 (underneath the Boss Reverb) is a footswitch MIDI controller.

I love all of Caspian's albums but I'm a little let down that the big announcement of theirs is just a deluxe version of an existing album and that it's vinyl only (for the time being). However, they did mention in an Instagram comment that their Live at the Cabot show should be available for sale soon, so I'm looking forward to that.

I really like the contrast between Dust and Disquiet and On Circles - the former is so dark and heavy while the latter has a sense of hopefulness to it. It's difficult for me to pick one over the other but I will say that On Circles doesn't have the same kind of epic closer that you get with Dust and Disquiet's final titular track.
