eithedog posted:I really would like there were some more bands that make happy post rock music, because everything lately is pesimistic as hell. Ever tried Moonlit Sailor? They're pretty much just straight up EiTS-style, okay, I'll go with "crescendocore", but they're ridiculously upbeat. There's also Saxon Shore, which have a electronic-influenced sound that's a bit more their own. Also: I'm pleased to see so many ASIWYFA fans here. They're face-meltingly amazing. The Pirate Ship Quintet's new album is called "Rope For No-Hopers". Preorders started two days ago. You can get it from Denovali Records for thirteen euros for a CD copy, 19.50EUR for vinyl. They've also reprinted the Quintet's self-titled debut EP. You can stream some stuff from the new album here.

precision posted:What they did with that record reminded me a lot of how Tarentel went from being good but completely by-the-numbers post-rock on their first two records, but then dropped We Move Through Weather and completely confused/impressed everyone. They went from a decent Mogwai-alike to a sound that owed more to Big Black and early Einsturzende Neubauten than anything else. Album is loving bleak and industrial and weird and easily one of the top post-rock (if it even falls into that category, honestly) releases of the 2000s. I'm a huge Tarentel fan, of both their sounds. Honestly, I think The Order Of Things is my favorite Tarentel album (one of my favorite albums in any genre, in fact) but Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun is my second-favorite. I also really like the Paper White EP, "Open Letter To Hummingbirds" is fantastic. I have just about all the full-length albums they've ever put out. Plus Ephemera I guess because it's technically a collection of EPs. Ephemera is another particularly good "old sound" album, btw. As for From Bone To Satellite, it's okay, but it's got some kind of dull bits, plus whatever that weird freakout at the start of "When We Almost Killed Ourselves" is. Almost sounds like something off their newer material, always thought it was a bit out of place. Not only are all the songs on The Order of Things fantastic and quite varied, they're also arranged really well, the album itself flows wonderfully. In my opinion it's superior to From Bone To Satellite by far.

Maybe I just don't have a soul, but I've listened to pretty much every Mono album at some point or another but none of it ever really stuck with me afterwards. Well, with the exception of The Flames Beyond the Cold Mountain and Burial At Sea. Those are some decent tunes I guess. I'm probably going to listen to their new album regardless, because I'm a complete sucker for post rock with strings in.

The only concerts we get around here are moldy oldies at the casino. Last time I saw a live show was in high school sometime, I think. The only play to buy CDs in this feckin' town is at Target, for chrissakes. So yeah. Not likely to be doing that any time soon, unfortunately.

slowdave posted:I've never been a huge Mono fan either, to be honest. They're too samey and predictable and the supposed beauty of their music just doesn't feel genuine to me. And now they have those grandiose orchestral arrangements and it's schmaltzier than ever. Yea there's a couple of their songs I really really like (Burial at Sea, for instance) but for the most part I gotta agree with you. Which is kind of odd, because normally I'm a sucker for strings and stuff in post-rock. Most of the usual 'drums + like ten guitars or something' stuff doesn't really do it for me anymore. With certain exceptions. slowdave posted:Yndi Halda or Explosions in the Sky probably. I don't like Yndi Halda as much as I used to, and EitS' output is kind of hit and miss with me, but I like 'em well enough. The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place and their new one are particular favorites of mine. Although it's probably at least in part because EitS were one of the first post-rock bands I ever heard. Parachute Underwear posted:Post-rock is kinda odd because I'll look at lists people make of bands they like and dislike and there are some from both lists that I'd group together in terms of similar sound/style, but that they feel totally different about. I notice this a lot honestly, there's a ton of people in this thread that seem to have pretty different tastes than I do. But honestly, musical taste is one of, like, the most insanely subjective things ever, so it kind of makes sense that it would be like that. As far as the more 'stereotypical' style of post rock goes, TWDY's earlier stuff is probably a more skillfully executed example of it than most, I think. I love the poo poo out of Tunnel Blanket too, though. Also, Henry's post reminded me why I couldn't get into Plains of the Purple Buffalo even though I really wanted to. VVVVVV I'm really curious to see what they're going to come up with next, that's for sure. SpruceZeus fucked around with this message at 05:38 on Aug 26, 2012 |
