I completely missed that Grails finally put a new record out back in 2017 and holy gently caress it's phenomenal. And incredibly diverse. It has tracks that sound like everything from Trans Am to Portishead. Really loving good poo poo.

There are two different post rocks There's stuff like Bark Psychosis, Slint, The For Carnation, Tarantel, etc, which is mostly experimental and sort of deconstructing rock And then there's stuff like GY!BE and Mogwai and all the bands that have followed them who are mostly doing a kind of classical music with rock instruments often backed up by strings The two sometimes but rarely overlap which is why it's kind of confusing

Henchman of Santa posted:EITS, TWDY and GYBE are certainly all closer to each other than they are to something like Tortoise. TWDY, especially Tunnel Blanket and beyond, get into more experimental territory I'd say. Not as much as later Tarantel or Liars but very different to the sort of stagnant EITS-alikes

Happy Songs For Happy People has been my favourite ever since it came out, though Mr. Beast came drat close "Kids Will Be Skeletons" is the most glorious track they've ever done I think EP+6 is also strong as gently caress, I think I prefer it to CODY. "Stanley Kubrick" is another all timer

Not exactly post-rock but I figure people in here probably also listen to them; Arab Strap have a new record out after a 16 year hiatus, and it's incredibly good, they haven't missed a step. Even the vocals sound exactly the same!

I know I already mentioned it but GOD drat I'm so stuck on the most recent Grails, Chalice Hymnal. It covers so much ground, there's a song on it that legit sounds like Portishead Edit: and pursuant to Arab Strap chat, holy gently caress "Another Clockwork Day" is brutal: For the second time this week, he plugs in the external drive He clicks through his archive to find the folder he needs He knows this path well He was bored with himself, tired of routine Free Live Cams left him limp The sounds of commerce, a complete turn off And the films these days, with their surgery scars and bad tats And it's all stepmoms and stepsisters now What the gently caress's all that about? So ends another clockwork day Of worn out luck and waning click The last awake, a door shut time So ends another clockwork night No, he needed something real And now he knows where to find it IMG4329, the flushed flesh of new love in summer The curtains drawn, the sun secluded and a gift that fits IMG4378, fastening the strap of a sharpened shoe on a hotel table The puckish promise of a bended knee IMG4398, a borrowed hoodie and a bruised thigh The absent eyes of afternoon afterglow And the suspense of more to come IMG4457, wearing nothing but a new postcode Statuesque on the bedspread plinth in reddened room As family smiles from fresh IKEA friends IMG4564, the sleeping Venus in a half-painted kitchen As hopeful spermatozoa race to an oval's open arms IMG4382, an intimate closeup of a solitary act Sent like a love letter long, long ago Secretly sated once again He softly ascends to the bedroom And slips gently under covers to join a snoring spouse In the almost dark, she's hardly aged a day When he removes his glasses She looks just the same as she does in the pixels of those old JPEGs Those low-res memories buried in folders within folders Simone Magus fucked around with this message at 19:07 on Mar 31, 2021 |

I've never seen mass swaying at a post rock show Everyone I've been to, people just stand there and nod their head or tap their legs or you know politely rock out. Even at like Bardo pond people usually are too stoned to move and too shy to act like hippies

Yeah his "just put mics up and hit record" has noticeable limitations whenever he records a band with more than like 4 members

Albini albums that are notably good, from memory: In Utero Rid of Me Gub by Pigface Surfer Rosa (which, funnily enough, he removed his producing credit from because it's a "pinched off loaf from a college band") Pod by The Breeders (one of my top 10 albums of ALL TIME, "Iris" loving slays)
