Has anybody started listening to Alcest's new release "Souvenir's d'un autre Monde" ? http://myspace.com/alcestmusic It originally started out as a French black metal band but it has somehow evolved into something more shoegaze like with this release. I like it a lot - reminds me somewhat of God is an Astronaut.

Is any of their other stuff better? windwaker posted:I have actually never listened to Mono (maybe for five minutes, that is), but is this DVD a good introduction to them? I love music documentaries. If you are in the Boston area - Constants, Caspian and Seneca are playing the Mid. East upstairs on the 30th. Should be stellar as always.

HamsterHuey posted:Alcest's older stuff is definitely more toward straight-up black metal. I have Le Secret and while you can kind of hear the sound that eventually fully arose on Souvenirs, there isn't a whole lot of similarity aside from the soft vocals on the first track. I'll probably skip it then since I've never gotten into that genre of metal and also because Niege claimed he never listened to any shoegazey or post-rock bands before Souvenirs - which I find laughable but hey, he's a free spirit. windwaker posted:Please stop trying to create a post-rock thread circle jerk and get out if you have nothing to contribute. What do you contribute ever? I rarely post in this thread or in NMD and I can see that you really have no interest in this music and that every one of your posts is useless. Seriously, you are fake. If you want to post around and have friends here that's cool and I'm sorry if I am coming off as a huge dick especially since I'm not a staple poster in NMD but you contribute nothing anywhere ever. HamsterHuey posted:Sometime next early year. There's either no exact date set or I simply can't find it, but the pre-order notices say that the CD won't ship for "at least 4 weeks" and the LP is at least 8. The TWDY album has leaked and it sounds pretty good. They've moved away from the EITS sound game but it's not a complete departure from what they were. While the first song has significant electronic elements I've noticed that as the album progresses the album as a whole gets mellower and the glitchy drums are replaced by an acoustic set until midway through "They move on tracks of never-ending light".. It also seems like they might actually be using a bow for some of the longer reverb swells. The song "The Mighty Rio Grande" reminds me way too much of Caspian though.

Battles are pretty cool and they put on a hell of a live show but I can't help but think that that the 'Mirrored' sound they have now will probably get stale in a few years. I'm really curious as to what new tangents they'll try and explore.

Hmmm, that is an insightful observation windwaker especially considering that the album's 'being' or 'existence' only breathes in loops and repeating patterns within said box. It exists as a constant loop of thought and life which strikes me as being a similar idea that Douglas Hofstadter has used in several of his books when he tries to argue that patterns, loops and recursion are the constructs of our consciousness.

Arise meager thread North is on tour - I'll probably see them in Allston http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=24002587 I think somebody in NMD mentioned being in the band - maybe they could dual headline with Tokyo Police Club and alienate both sets of fans. Boston: Caspian at the Paradise Jun 21st, Grails and then Russian Circles next Friday and Saturday Boris/Torche in July The new Sigur Ros isn't ethereal like their past work. Torche is on tour if you like stoner/sludge metal.

It looks like I won't be seeing another show until Mogwai on Sept. 19th in Philadelphia. That show was weird - check them out with Yndi Halda at TT's in August and you won't be disappointed. They're playing Friday. Mogwai is playing on Monday...are you seeing them instead? If you're seeing Sigur Ros it will be at the Pavilion so get beers/drinks before the show. Bring a sweatshirt too since it's right next to the harbor and will get cold. Sigur can be very loud and quiet and I'm sure people will get pissy if you talk during the quiet parts. There's a little promenade/picnic area near the concessions where you can chill, talk and try to fingerbang your date. Mogwai will be at the Wilbur theater which I have not been to but I do know it is a seated theater, which sucks. Mogwai is loud so bring earplugs. Just stand still the entire show.
