Free to roam the heavens in man's noble quest to investigate the weirdness of the universe!

I accidentally left my ipod charger at home, so instead of draining the battery, I did a Youtube roulette with various post-rock songs and came across this band called Tomorrow We Sail. Jesus Christ this is a gorgeous sound.

The White Rose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucSECe9PCq8
Leningrad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMtf54gUf78

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have many songs, but what they do have just blows me away. Is there anything else similar to this sound?

You weren't kidding! This is glorious. Great vocals, great, powerful music. Thanks for this.

This thread has been a wonderful trove, so the least I can do is pay back. Speaking of a nautical theme, though, here's another one of the bands that I found through my youtube scrounging, The End of the Ocean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG8xpIXbG3E. I'm not sure if it's just the name or what, but for some reason they do evoke the sea somehow. I can't pinpoint why exactly, though.

Other notable find is Industries of the Blind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vthig-LH7Mk. They sound an awful lot like Yndi Halda to me, which means they sound phenomenal. I'm an absolute sucker for strings and/or piano in my post rock, it seems.

This is by far my favourite thread on Something Awful for that reason. On the strings/piano end of things, I would like to point you in the direction of Rachel's; the MONO & World's End Girlfriend album, Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain and Amiina. I do love it when we get new people in this thread, bringing in their recent finds.

At some point, my definition of post-rock sort of collapses and I have no idea why something is considered post-rock aside from it being mostly instrumental and possibly having guitars in it. I love the hell out of Rachel's and Amiina, but drat if I can tell you what makes them post-rock. Mono and WEG, on the other hand, at least feature rock instruments pretty prominently.

Here is a band called Films that I probably wouldn't properly describe as post-rock, but it does resonate along the same sounds as, say, Eluvium. However, I don't think there is any way to get their album outside of their label's site, but it is such a calm and relaxing listen that it was entirely worth the buy.

On the free and sounds fantastic front, there is Motionless. They sound like a somewhat lighter Samuel Jackson Five, where there are some jazz-like sounds mixed in, but their music crescendos very well, and, hey, free. You can get their EPs here.

I just wanted to pimp iamthemorning, whose album you can get for whatever you want here: http://iamthemorningband.bandcamp.com/ Being bandcamp, there are also samples of their songs if you don't want to commit to a download. I'm not entirely sure I would actually describe them as post-rock, but they describe themselves as post-rock, so I guess that counts? But violins, pianos, and female vocals all hit my sweet spots, so give them a listen! Too bad they are apparently based in Russia so I will likely never see them in concert.

The singer for iamthemorning also did guest vocals for a song for another band called I Am Waiting For You Last Summer, whose name gives me a sort of apoplectic fit when I start thinking about its tense for too long. The song is called Obsessed and is more traditional post-rock, albeit with some electronic bits, but not too much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83VKOmuolLE

Hope you guys enjoy!

I'd love to hear about more bands, especially with female singers.

It's sort of hard, since I always associate post rock with being instrumental, so at some point I have no idea where the line between post-rock and, uh, regular rock is. But I'm still going to attempt to recommend stuff, even if it may or may not fall into the purview of post-rock.

Rokkurro is a band from Iceland and has shades of Sigur Ros in it. It's pretty much what you expect music from Iceland to sound like, being really tender with a touch of melancholy, probably because they're from a land with no sun. You can get their albums from here: http://www.gogoyoko.com/artist/rokkurro and here's a youtube of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B39h3WFFjfo

Matryoshka is a band from Tokyo, and is likewise more of a tender sound. It straddles the line with post-rock, but outputs some undeniably beautiful music. Their albums, Laideronnette and Zetracenie, are available on Amazon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_q7LtFqdgM

Aaaand that seems to exhaust my list.

Edit: Was reminded that Immanu El has lyrics as well.

I'm convinced the first song in this trailer is by a post rock band. Help!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eFmi1E3s3w

It's probably not an actual song, but the sort of progression is probably similar enough to pieces of other songs that you just equate them together. My first thought was maybe something by The Calm Blue Sea:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPtSrQDckKM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhhfk_1Pwhw

Or maybe even En Plein Air:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXU8WFjImuo

None of these are exactly it obviously, but I think it's such a familiar sound that it's fairly indistinguishable without the rest of the song.

Or maybe this post was just a way to throw The Calm Blue Sea and En Plein Air out there?

I am not really the biggest fan of Sigur Ros, but all these positive reports make me excited to see them next week.

Tangentially, I realize that I really like the sound of Icelandic post-rock bands, like Sigur Ros, Amiina, Rokkurro, etc. Anyone want to drop some recommendations?

I just got back from Sigur Ros and although I only recognized like 3 songs, what a goddamn concert.

So who wants to listen to some melancholic post-rock?

First off is the new album from No Clear Mind (bandcamp), [url=http://www.amazon.com/Mets/dp/B00CFI937G[Mets]/url] (Amazon), and although I've only listened to one song, hits the same emotional chords as their first album, Dream Is Destiny. It very much sounds like the perfect soundtrack to a lonely night. Here's a youtube link to one of my favorite songs from their debut, but really, all the songs on it are good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYIAoQeyJbw

Then there's The Nest Itself (bandcamp), which I am currently just listening through on bandcamp for the first time. They seem to like contrasting soft piano with really dissonant sounding guitar, and since I'm a complete sap for piano in my post-rock, I figure I might as well throw them out here. Their drums sound a bit weak, though, but it could just be the songs I've listened to.

They've been mentioned in this thread before despite being kinda marginally post-rock, but iamthemorning has a Kickstarter for their new album. I would really like to see that entire concert with the string orchestra.

Can anyone recommend any good albums that strongly evoke the sea or have a maritime or nautical feel to them? I realize that that's fairly vague and I can't even articulate why anything would give off that feeling besides maybe some subconscious suggestion from the album or band name. I've been listening to The End of the Ocean's Pacific/Atlantic a lot and I kinda want more of that. Of Sinking Ships gets sorta close at times, but doesn't quite hit it just right.

These recommendations are all pretty drat great, thanks all! Finally, a soundtrack for when I look longingly into the horizon.

Edit: Just to further contribute, Metavari's "Be One Of Us and Hear No Noise" is a pretty great album for the same purpose.

I wish they would go back to that sound they had in Matador. That is one of my all time favorite albums. I can respect musicians evolving and changing their style but man do I miss that sound.

Just a correction, fox capture plan is the name of the band, not attack on Fox. Fox capture plan owns. If anyone has some more of that piano acid jazz style, please do share.

I'm phone posting or else I'd link to jizue, so Google that poo poo up.

I am the biggest sucker for bands that use piano and/or strings, so here is the Chinese band Whyoceans:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb7_JhgeEOg

More recommendations of piano and/or strings in instrumentation are also welcome, even if they're something more like Balmorhea, which I don't even really consider post-rock but if I squint hard enough I'll accept it.

My gateway bands were God Is An Astronaut, Caspian (Moksha is still incredible to listen to and I think it was my most listened to song in one year), The American Dollar, and Yndi Halda (holy poo poo Enjoy Eternal Bliss is old).

I don't know if this is considered post-rock, but I came across this band and I liked this album enough to pick it up and their other one. I like the eclectic instrumentation and just general cheeriness to the songs. Sounds like a great album for spring/summer:

I just wanted to complain about the Rachel's album The Sea and the Bells and how it's a generally really lovely album but fuuuck that part in The Sirens.
