Lol this is the lamest poo poo to play "no I'm the wokest liberal on twitter" over and it's honestly sad.

especially considering it's a genre that was founded on racial inclusion and a song coming from a band with founding and current black members.

like i don't think the song is particularly up to the standards I have for them, but like, who gives a poo poo

I mean I wouldn't rant about it on social media but the song is tone-deaf as poo poo and pretty disappointing to me

i don't necessarily disagree but the critiques of it are really blowing past that and going right to "ska is all white dudes" discourse which really needs to loving die

Miracle of miracles, there may be a new Streetlight Manifesto album on the way. By "may," I mean Streetlight says there definitely is, due out next year sometime, but, you know, fool me once...

I love Streetlight, but based on my poster I have from their second annual "we're not touring anymore" tour in 2014 (where I distinctly remember Tomas saying "we're recording a new album due out any day now"), I will believe it when I actually listen to it.

Yeah they've said they've been in the studio for like ten years now. I actually don't doubt that they have been, either. It's just that Kalnoky is a super perfectionist and honestly without a studio pressuring him I'm not certain he can actually get anything finished.

I heavily suspect their conflict with Victory Records wasn't entirely one-sided. Obviously Victory pulled some shady poo poo and I'm not one to defend a bit corporation, but also I imagine trying to get Kalnoky to finish an album on time is like trying to get water from a stone.

Lee “Scratch” Perry died at 85 today. Another of the Jamaican originators lost.

I never come here but I needed to find a place to post about Scratch Perry’s death so I hope I can Kramer in and do that here, because this ska thread is like the closest place to a dub thread I can find. Glad to see someone else is bummed, too

Scratch Perry owned. He was was an incredible producer and innovator and he sounded like a Rasta Wesley Willis in his interviews, I am so sad he’s gone

I was in college from 1996 to 2000, the perfect time to be enmeshed in both scenes, especially as a sax player. I'm really looking forward to reading the book.

Looking for recommendations: I want to listen to a ska podcast or radio-show. Something that comes out weekly-ish, plays a variety of new ska songs, talks about the scene a bit (news, gossip, etc), is not hosted by a monotonous boomer. Is there anything like that out there?

A while ago, someone in this thread recommend 23 minutes of Ska. Available wherever you get your podcasts. https://radjose.wordpress.com/ It's just 23 minutes of Ska, no talking just music. They have a good variety but none of the other stuff you're looking for.
