my stance on brand new is that i listen to them because i am not invested in jesse lacey as a person, i am invested in individual songs that are well written. i think he's a person capable of writing some really good music but that doesn't make me okay with him. i don't believe that streaming music on spotify supports the artists i want to support, so at the same time, i also believe that it doesn't support artists that i don't support. i've never given them money for albums or gone to a show. to me the world is filled with authors who are demonstrably bad people but have made work that stands up, through the different centuries and mediums. i don't know. also i would've deleted this post but i accidentally hit "submit" or some shortcut to do it with the keyboard, and assumed an edit would look worse than posting this landgrabber fucked around with this message at 16:51 on Apr 7, 2025 |

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about Brand New but it's impossible to share them on the internet without someone getting mad, so I'll just say I'm glad I got to see them in 2010 without any moral quandaries.

i would say i think it's very interesting that the man who wrote Sic Transit Gloria, which is seemingly about being assaulted or at least in a situation where someone having sex is uncomfortable enough to the point where it was traumatizing and causes the narrator to say "die young and save yourself." i find that hypocrisy pretty offensive and it's emblematic of an absolutely rotten view of women. at the same time, i like reading anne sexton's poems sometimes, and her daughter alleged that she was abused by her mother. and sometimes i feel rotten for at once liking fiona apple and brand new. but we all contain contradictions i suppose.

I think you can feel complicated emotions about listening to Brand New in 2025 but you are just making excuses if you are paying $130+ per ticket to go see Brand New play live in 2025.

I know a couple people who bought tickets to the Brand New tour and I was scratching my head when I found that out. These are educated people who I'm sure are aware of Jesse Lacey's past allegations. I wonder if they're still going after this round of allegations.

One of the venues near me has lawn tickets for $70 but yeah seats are $200+ and pit over $300. Blink’s been overpriced since the reunion and sucks now anyway. As much as I love Alkaline, I saw them twice last year so don’t really feel the need to drop that much cash and travel. Unrelated, Mannequin Pussy and Gouge Away are doing some shows together late summer/ early fall.

Yeah they played a proper arena here last time and prices were dumb then too, but I could’ve gotten partial view on day of for something like $25. This time they’ve picked Hard Rock Live that holds a few thousand people, so they can gouge the price right up.
