Also check out Ash Borer, Weakling, Skagos, Fauna, Fell Voices (maybe), Deafheaven (gasp!), Gottesmorder, Alda, Lake of Blood, Panopticon, Fen, or Heretoir. I'm less familiar with bands similar to Wodensthrone. Maybe Drudkh?

If that list is a bit overwhelming (although it's by no means comprehensive), I'd say start with Ash Borer. They're probably my favorite in the subgenre.

I hope this is the weakest track. It doesn't sound as good as Volcano, the lyrics are more boring than Volcano. They really did do a Metallica and slowed the gently caress down, I wish this had the same production as Death Magnetic, because then it'd be loving hilariously bad.

No arguments here.

Watain: I'm really enjoying this. I was worried that it might be Lawless Darkness or Sworn to the Dark pt 2, but this one has it's own merits. To my mind, Watain to do the big, showy, more accessible black metal really well, and whilst they continue to get it right, I'll continue to enjoy it. I quite enjoyed the ballad too

Yeah, Volcano was the last thing I enjoyed by them, and that was what, 2002? That said, I think I was the only one who liked Volcano as much as I did. I still think it may be their best album, as weird as that is.

e: Also, holy poo poo. I finally listened to the Ruins of Beverast preview tracks. :drat:
I just wish that every time I heard them I wouldn't immediately remember Alexander's previous band, Nagelfar, and how much I wish they hadn't fallen apart so many years ago. Might have been my favorite black metal band of the 90s.

The new urfaust EPs and live album are up in the Van Records shop now, along with new Ruins of Beverast and a heap of new shirt designs. I hope they're still there on Sunday as I can't order before then! The EPs are the ones that I'm worried about selling out.

Hello? Charlemagne?!
Speaking of Urfaust: I've seen them praised in many places (including here), but I've never gotten into them. What's a good place to start?

Also, I got my copy of the Lychgate LP from Gilead finally, and it sounds amazing. Fell Voices too, I guess.

nomapple

The mastering on that Fell Voices record really irritates me. I can appreciate raw production, and I get the "wall of sound" aesthetic they're going for, but to say the riffs are buried on that release would be an understatement. That said, they're absolutely mind blowing live. I must revisit Lychgate I guess, thought it was good, but nothing special.

All the Urfaust releases have their merits, but I would start with the most recent full length probably, working backwards. Don't skip the Einsidler EP either (probably spelt horrendously wrong but I can't be bothered to check on my phone) as both tracks are really excellent. The Ritual Music... compilation is well worth checking out true, there are some brilliant tracks on it. I really hope I get to see them live one day, either because I find someone to travel with me, or they finally play London.

Altar of Plagues, Entropia and The Great Old Ones are the only blackgaze bands I can stand personally. AoP especially, but that's mostly because they went full industrial in their last album to rather spectacular effect.

Hey guys, Jake here. I am honoured to announce that I was given the opportunity to perform some guest vocals on the upcoming Catuvolcus album! I got to listen to the whole thing yesterday, and it absolutely destroys! 'Gergovia' is nearly an hour of huge, energetic, powerful melodic black metal that harkens back to times before post-rock and shoegaze encroached on the genre and made it tepid, flaccid, and weak. Be warned: Catuvolcus comes armed with steel, torches, and mighty riffs - not an album to miss!
