I love me some black metal, am a dirt bag backpacker, own a loving log cabin in upper Michigan, and think Lunn should hook up with someone who can play guitar. That cover photo could be my neighbor in Michigan. Hurray!

(I still like Pantopticon, but I think that album sounds like muddy poo poo)

No worries, it's sold out now anyway. Pick one up on eBay for $100+ in a few days.

i don't like him because he just sounds like all those other 'cascadian' guys that were popular for a while but also there's a banjo for whatever reason

Agalloch is my all time favorite bm band and Panopticon is getting up pretty high so I guess I fully embrace the cascadian scene. Amusing. I wasn’t always fond of it back in the day but I think I was just trying to be hard and cool.

You have no idea how much soft and uncool music I like, but I find all the folky cascadian stuff pretty boring too. I honestly think atmospheric/post black stuff like Alcest, Altar of Plagues and Ultar is much better at doing the same kind of thing. Obviously a lot of people feel exactly the opposite way.

e: Oh hey, turns out Ultar have a new single out. It's decent, although not as good as the best stuff off their debut IMO. It might well sound better in context though.

It’s all pretty good to me. I dig the Cascade stuff because deep down I’m a hippie treefucker who thinks about pantheism too often. The music ~resonates~ with me.

I think that a lot of 'atmospheric' black metal fails because the riffs and songwriting often aren't very good and the atmosphere isn't really good enough to stand on its own. Something like Branikald or some of those other bbh bands kind of manage that though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvIT49I3mRk

Only got through it once, but the Americana side of "The Scars of Man..." was kinda bad. I really like the instrumentation and the sentiment behind it, but A. Lunn should not be singin' songs like that. It's actively bad. Not only that, but the production obscures a lot of the words, some of them just devolving into gruff mumbles. Side I is decent, but not as good as Kentucky or Autumn Eternal. Autumn Eternal had a neat kind of vibe that I was hoping to see expanded on, but this is a bit of a regression.

I'm trying to find a song that I liked years ago, but all I remember is a vague description: atmospheric French BM, really long song, like 8+ minutes, and it had an acoustic guitar intro that I would recognize instantly. I think I last heard it in 2007.

E: I have gone through all of the Alcest and Amesoeurs I can find from that time and it doesn't appear to be them.

E2: it's "Phalènes Et Pestilence - Salvatrice Averse" by Peste Noire. I actually posted about it in this thread.

Especially when I have heard NWN is doing die hard versions? I don't have a source for that other than what I saw in the b9 black metal thread, but NWN is a good reliable label and the records I have bought for them are super nice. Some of the best modern pressings I own.

It's interesting to hear a band from a country actively in a war. I mean it's not war metal, but I imagine some soldier blasting it in some bombed out factory trying to not get killed by Russians.

I hope not, I mean all the research I did was looking at EM and the description said nothing about nationalism, etc. Lyrical themes: "Death, Despair, Existence." Just because I imagine it has something to do with a war doesn't mean it actually does I don't speak the Ukrainian language. Are Ukranian sorta-black metal/post-blah-blah notoriously nazis or just because it's a European dude it's nazis?
