So the past 3 months I took the plunge into black metal after getting kinda burned out on Japanese raw punk and 80s crust/D-beat. I was pretty surprised by how much I liked of what I heard considering I've always been kinda wary of extreme metal. I'm typically drawn more towards mid tempo, punkier, and lo fi stuff and I really dig the whole atmosphere the music provides.

My favorites so far have been
Panzerfaust by Darkthrone
Cult is Alive by Darkthrone
Nights Middle EP by Bone Awl
Magnetism of War by Bone Awl
the first Bathory Demo
Nahvlar s/t
Deathcrush by Mayhem
Dimensiónes del Trance Kósmico by Volahn

That Volahn lp is loving awesome Indigenismo inspired black metal, its one of my favorite albums I've heard all year.

I can't get into Transylvanian Hunger at all its my least favorite Darkthrone album, every song sounds exactly the same to me and its not even cool in a hypnotic way to me, no matter how hard I want to like it just hasn't hit me. I've listened to most of Burzum's non synth discography, but part of me still feels weird about it because the dude is a nutjob (ironically I like Fang a lot!). Some others I've listened too in passing that were enjoyable or okay were Gnaw Their Tounges, Hex Noir, and Von.

Oh yeah I definitely enjoy all of the recent Darkthrone albums, Circle the Wagons rules and has great album artwork. I still haven't listened to A Blaze in The Northern Sky and a handful of their other works yet. Panzerfaust is definitely my favorite though, it was my first BM album to listen to and the first time I heard Quintessence I was hooked, what a sinister fuckin album.

I'm getting a new record player this week and I've got a shipment of BM vinyls along with some Godflesh and a few hardcore albums on its way, life owns hail satan.

Anyway, I personally recommend revisiting Transylvanian Hunger at some point. I felt the same way about it for a while, but that opening melody starting to creep into my head. I'm pretty into it now.

I listened to it again the other night for the first time in like 2 months, and yeah I think I get it now once that opening track pulls you in it owns.

I have to agree - it's an excellent piece of work. I just love Moonsorrow now.

So, has anyone seen Watain this tour yet? Are they dragging along smelly dead things with them? (I know this is like asking 'is water wet?', but still.) I really want to see Watain, but I don't know how I'm going to deal with the smell. (And I want to support my friends in the band Irony on their last show ever.) I am false metal that way :colbert:

I'm gonna go see them on the 24th, I checked them out and I liked Sworn To The Dark quite a bit and they seem like they put on a great live show. I can't imagine the smell being any worse than the warehouse crust shows I attended in high school.

Finally got around to listening to Forest Poetry by Ildjarn after going on an endless Bone Awl kick. I love this stuff so much I can just listen to fuzzed out repetitive rear end riffs all day.

I also checked out Diocletian's second ep and Witchrist's most recent lp, Decimator and Beheaded Ouroborus, and I really enjoy them. I guess they are both considered blackened death metal and opening me up to exploring death metal as a genre more beyond Entombed and Repulsion.

Good news. Peaceville bought the rights from Moonfog and are re-releasing Darkthrones greatest album, Panzerfaust.

Its a 2 disc edition - the original album, and the album with Fenriz commentary over the top. Here is a track.

Pretty happy I bothered to read the Peaceville email now.

:hellyeah:

I just discovered Peste Noire from reading through this thread and after some warming up to them decided they rule.

Watain was really entertaining last night, the smell got lots of people including the staff out of the venue. I've got all this black gunk in my nose from the torches they were burning.

Goatwhore and Black Anvil were both enjoyable live, the vocalist of Goatwhore just straight up seems like a cool dude who loves metal. The local opener was embarrassingly bad though.

Though the night was a little thrown off at the near 4 dollar lone stars which was a load of garbage.

With the exception of the last like 5 times I've seen the Melvins play, I'm not used to having to pay more then 2 dollars for lone stars at little clubs around Houston I guess, much less see a band play on a stage taller then my waist.

Are there any collectively owned micro-brews produced by secretive national socialist black metal warriors?

Does anyone here like Cultes Des Ghoules from Poland? Definitely one of the best modern BM bands around, total satanic occult worship. I'm pretty sure the band members are just piles of ancient bones.
