MGLA was my number one for the year with Wiegedood coming in close second. Deafheaven was disappointing, decent but not what I really expected and a little too much cheese. Krallice was good but a little too dissonantly weird and shreddy for my tastes, I wanted more Years Past Matter so I ended up listening to that album instead. Also Spectral Lore had a new album recently out, haven't spent much time with it but I love the last two tracks on III and those are slow burners that are best listened to on long drives, so I'll give the new album a shot in that context.

I love the raw and oppressive sound of Darkspace but I also like the more uplifting chord progressions the latter bands bring to the table. Spectral Lore is probably the closest band I think has this kind of sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=punWmrW6oFI edit: Song takes a while to get going, give it time.

Henchman of Santa posted:Also just don't even bother with bands from eastern Europe, particularly Poland or Ukraine if they present an ethical dilemma for you. Or a lot of French acts. Dissection is an interesting example because Nodtveidt actually carried out a heinous crime rather than just being a bigot but he's also dead so you're not really supporting anything with his music. if you like Storm of the Lights Bane era dissection and want more, there's always Thulcandra. They're a side project from Stefan from Obscura https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YjeKWZtOOo But my favorite kind of black metal is incredibly removed from traditional black metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSriUwFKHBE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzK0fp1ZJ18
