Speaking of rancid-smelling concerts, this weekend was Nidrosian Black Mass III here in Trondheim. The stage was fenced in by crucified deer-heads, which were not a pleasant odor after 3 days of sweaty gigs. Concerning the individual bands, Behexen smelled the worst, covered in rotten blood and something that must have been either fish guts or semen. It was one hell of a festival though, these kind of shows are pretty hard to come by.

New Burzum-album announced

quote:

The Fallen is the 9th studio album from Burzum, and follows the highly critically acclaimed 2010 release Belus which put Burzum straight back at the at the top of the chain as of one of the most innovative and creative metal artists of our time. Fallen follows Belus in sound and structure, and can also be compared to the music on the groundbreaking DET SOM ENGANG VAR. Fallen is more dynamic and hard hitting then Belus and has an even bigger sound, but still carries the same trademark melodic melody lines throughout that makes Burzum sound so iconic and unique.

Burzum says of the new album and his style of music:
"Musically FALLEN is like a cross between BELUS and something new, inspired more by the debut album and DET SOM ENGANG VAR than by HVIS LYSET TAR OSS or FILOSOFEM. The sound is more dynamic – we mastered the album as if it was classical music – and I was more experimental than I was on BELUS in all respects. Lyric wise it is similar to the debut album, in the way that it is more personal and focuses on existential issues, but the mythological undertone known from BELUS is still there. I have also included some ambient tracks – a short introduction and a longer conclusion."

Not gonna lie, I'm excited about this. I actually thought Belus was quite good, with a couple of great tracks.

Tracklist for Fallen:

I. Fra Verdenstreet (From the World Tree)
II. Jeg faller (I'm Falling)
III. Valen (The Vale? [not quite sure how to translate this one])
IV. Vanvidd (Insanity)
V. Enhver til Sitt (Each to Their Own)
VI. Budstikken (The Messenger-Stick)
VII. Til Hel og tilbake igjen (To Hel and Back Again)

I think 'Valen' is either 'the fields of battle' or 'the fallen warriors'.

I'm Norwegian, and 'Valen' isn't really a normal word. Vale is one of Loke's sons in Norse mythology though, so I guess that's what the title references.

Not used very much in modern Norwegian but it means "the field of battle". The most famous use of it is probably in the Norwegian lyrics to the Internationale, a translation dating back to the first decade of the 20th century. Comes from the same root word as we find in Valhall and Valkyrie.

That makes sense and I feel stupid for not thinking of it. Hopefully the album will actually expand on the old sound and not just Varg trying to recreate Hvis Lyset Tar Oss with better production.

Two new songs from The Great Old Ones' upcoming album Tekeli-li

In related news, I just ordered this package:

Normally limited editions are a tacky waste of time, but I fell for this one. The big box edition is limited to 150 copies, only 75 with At The Mountains Of Madness in English.

That aside, I recently received my copy of Dayal Patterson's "Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult". I'm around half-way through it, and so far it is by far the best and most comprehensive insight into the evolution of the black metal genre and scene I've ever seen. Highlights involve the story of how VON was formed, and a characteristically melodramatic tale of Tom G. Warrior's troubled childhood. The chronicle begins with Coven and Black Sabbath, and seems to stretch until today's trends of post-black metal and the depressive wave. Recommended reading if you're tired of hearing the same old story of church-burning and murder, and instead want something with a greater focus on the music itself. I consider myself pretty well-versed in the story of the genre, but I keep learning new stories and tidbits for every chapter of this 500-page behemoth.

They happen to be excellent live, and are spearheading the only interesting local Norwegian scene right now (Trondheim/Nidaros). The nature of that scene assures that they have a lot of contacts that reach beyond Norway, and they have become minor underground legends at this point. It also doesn't hurt that they share members with Behexen, Vemod, Celestial Bloodshed, Mare, Kaosritual, Black Majesty, Aptorian Demon, and Altaar. Before he was shot and killed, Steingrim Thorson (Selvhat, Celestial Bloodshed, Unbeing, etc) was their bassist. They've been playing with bands like Urfaust, Mgla, Svartidaudi, Behexen, Kadotus, and so on.

I also happen to like their music, but each to their own.

It's (partly) Quintescence from Panzerfaust, which was released the same year as Nordanvind. Anyone know how this came to be and which one came first?

Panzerfaust was recorded in february/april 1994, while Nordavind was recorded in november 1994. Other than "Noregsgard", the songs on Nordavind are just metal adaptations of traditional Norwegian folk songs. Most likely Fenriz just liked the main riff of "Quintessence" enough to warrant a second take.

Fenriz has later expressed regret at ever recording Nordavind, and has shown strong distaste for the viking/folk trend that followed Storm and Isengard. Personally I don't mind the albums, but Storm at least feels like a novelty project.

It's doable, just gotta get over that fear of travelling and flying alone! I mean I've never been to Norway before, and I've seen they're doing a cruise around the fjords with live music by a Japanese doom metal band?? How could I not?

Prices (and salaries) are quite high here, particularly in Oslo, so watch out for ridiculously priced hotels. So I went and tracked down the Finnish black metal documentary. It's pretty much as embarrassing as any other black metal documentary, and offers no new information at all. It's also only 50 or so minutes long. For your pleasure I've screencapped some choice moments.

There are a lot of talking heads namedropping Venom, some of whom put on corpsepaint seemingly just for the interview.

Here's Molestor Kadotus (of Anal Blasphemy and Anal Desecrating Penis Mutilation) in his bedroom:

He also talks about how other Finnish bands are quick to hate certain bands for no reason whatsoever, but stresses that he is still very successful abroad.

Lord Sathanacia (of Azazel) with some deep social insights:

He is also really pissed off that all his bandmates quit the band and started playing punk, which he dislikes almost as much as Muslims.

At one point, the documentary features a shot literally zooming in on a basement:

Inside some balaclava-wearing dudes are performing a ritual to Julius Evola, which entails pointing a gun to one of the guys' head. This is also the only part of the film that goes beyond talking heads and random photos/cover art/concert footage.

Mikko Aspa (Clandestine Blaze, Deathspell Omega) gives his view on women in black metal:

The guy runs (or ran?) his own porn production company, and also has a one-man pornogrind-band called Creamface, so I'm not too surprised.

Blackmoon Gravedesecrator (Goatmoon) living up to his name, and being an all-around class act:

For some reason he is always shirtless. When I saw him perform with Ride For Revenge he also had a half-finished "thug life"-style stomach tattoo saying "Goatmoon".

Demonos Sova (Barathrum) is actually pretty cool:

He sort of reminds me of a Finnish version of Fenriz, with perhaps more of a history with drugs?

And finally, Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance (Beherit) does his whole interview looking like this, and talks about Buddhism while the others are bragging about satanism:

All in all 2/5, would probably not watch again.

One of the dudes from Azaghal being high as gently caress while being interviewed.

Enochian Crescent guys saying that they could probably slice up their fans at shows, but won't because they might face legal consequences.

Werewolf from Satanic Warmaster saying that he hates when bands try to defend themselves by saying they're not political. :ironicat:

The Stormheit guy laughing about his daughter seeing stuff in the papers about them being nazis (they are).
