Very marginally related to the current discussion, but a girl I went to university with just contacted me to ask about Norwegian black metal. She's working at a Norwegian embassy in Brazil, and they are required to learn about black metal. I guess people come to the embassy to ask about it? I told her to read up on Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Enslaved, and Emperor. Most books, documentaries and websites about the topic are way too riddled with sensationalism to be of any help, but I also pointed her towards Dayal Patterson's book, which treats the Norwegian scene more as a musical movement than an orgy of crime and satanism. Any other suggestions to someone who needs a basic introduction to the phenomenon? ElectricWizard fucked around with this message at 15:20 on Sep 7, 2015 |

TollTheHounds posted:I haven't gone far back enough in this thread but if there was ever a PYF black metal album cover, this would be my vote. I actually like this album, but the cover is classically terrible. Looking over the artist's page, aside from all the ridiculously awful tits and rear end, I'm amazed that this guy apparently hasn't done any of Graveland's artwork.

Panopticon, Death Karma, Mgla, Obsequiae, Leviathan, Akhlys, and Misthyrming were my black metal picks for AOTY. I was also pleasantly surprised by the newest Marduk-album.

When it comes to atmospheric black metal, Vemod don't get nearly enough recognition. Check out the song Ikledd Evighetens Kappe.

Just chipping in to say Lords of Chaos is not as terrible as I expected. The dialogue is predictably poo poo, but the level of detail is impressive. They capture early 90s Norway really well. Åkerlund’s background shines through, and Varg is shown as the cock he is. The soundtrack is alright, with some good stuff from Sigur Ros and Tangerine Dream, and you have Attila’s son playing his dad. 3/5 stars.

I know this subsubgenre mercifully died around 5-10 years ago, but here’s some dsbm/athmospheric stuff that still holds up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06EhUWhLKAc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJTLVfth41A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4RTvDy0RZ4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfQlJ-l7LRc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjXRMAOnc7M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR1va7wcsiY ElectricWizard fucked around with this message at 11:02 on May 18, 2019 |

Went to see LIK’s first gig last night, at Nordvis Høstfest with Bhleg and Vemod. All three were great. LIK played all of their debut album and a few other tracks, and worked well as a full band. Vemod played a few new songs that veered heavily into post rock. Bhleg were quite theatrical, and a lot better live than I expected. Forndom also played, but were boring as hell so I didn’t catch their whole set. Here’s a shot I took of Bhleg’s frontman.
