New Petrychor is out. There are posts about it in the metal thread, but I'm pretty sure they're still considered black metal in some form.

I like it, but I think the fake drums really really need to go. His music is really powerful and the drums don't do it justice.

Agreed completely. Petrychor initially caught my attention because the blindside juxtaposition from the 12 string to the machine gun drums threw me off guard, and it was kind of cool. The full length feels like it doesn't do anything different or new and just reuses that 'pretty guitar, pretty guitar CHAOSCHAOSCHAOSCHAOS' thing and over again.

On a different note, I've been getting the gently caress down on Altar of Plagues' new album. I don't think I quite like it as much as White Tomb, but its still loving good.

Ludicra has disbanded :/

Just came here to post that Ludicra was a loving amazing band and a shining example of good American black metal. I am very sad to see them go, and more selfishly that I never got to see them live.

The band is selling off its remaining merch at very low prices - $5 tees and $7 LPs. Pick something up.

Edit: On a lighter note, WITTR's tour dates for Celestial Lineage have been announced. I really like the idea of seeing them in a forest.

So I made some lovely fuzz-ridden black metal for GBS' annual awful christmas music thread, you guys might get a kick out of it. i continue to crack up at the terrible transitions and misplaced cymbals and poo poo. filming a video for it in the mountains tomorrow.

behold.

One a side note, Ash Borer's 2011 self-title is loving awesome.

Do any of you have a source for either Ash Borer or Skagos merch? All I was able to dig up was the Gilead Media site which doesn't have anything in stock ATM. I'd love to score a shirt or a backpatch (or an old shirt to turn into a backpatch)if possible.

I don't think I'm going to get chastised for this, but I'm going to post a few bands that aren't necessarily black metal, but are either heavily influenced by it or I've stumbled on them through associations with black metal acts and they're way too dark or weird for other categories they might be better put in.

Ludicra - Ludicra's first album was a lot more black metal-ey than what they winded up doing on their last album, but the two female vocalists, John Cobbett's crusty shredding and Aesop Dekker's drum work are loving killer.

Locrian I don't remember how i found these guys but they put out some unsettling and beautiful drone stuff with a bit of black metal elements here and there. If you like the dark ambient atmosphere and sound you might dig these guys.

Master Musicians of Bukkake This one's a stretch for sure, but they're so loving strange that I had to share. These guys opened for WITTR in San Francisco recently and I think that's how I found out about them. They're apparently a pet project of producer Randall Dunn and features members from Earth. This is really bizarre middle eastern tinged psychrock stuff, but they played an in-store show at LA's Vacation Vinyl that was really cool. Barely on the black metal radar, but I think it's interesting to see the different genres black metal has opened me up to.

Anyone else found weird poo poo through links like that?

Liturgy: hipster black metal.

Agree/disagree?

I have no idea.

I don't think hipster black metal is actually a thing. I do think uninteresting, note-spamming music cloaked in hissing fuzz and surrounded by a pretentious and nonsensical ideology to try and make up for music that, at the end of the day, is just going through the motions is a thing. And Hunter comes off as a dbag.

Caught Alcest in Long Beach last night and they were excellent. Neige's vocals were mixed better than I've ever heard them, ie, actually audible.

So Austin Lunn of Panopticon has created coal-miner folk influenced black metal. It's a little clusterfucky, but it's neat to see elements of Americana seeping into extreme music. I like it.

Nice! The encore of all three 'Fortress is Burning' songs sequentially was awesome, I love the crazy noise set they always end it with.

I might go see them again next month

Our show got a lot of Pale Folklore love, which was pretty drat rad.

Any of you interested in the rest of the pictures I shot from the set can check them out here.

I feel super goofy about self promo stuff but my band decided to put out our new album this past Friday. We're sort of a black / deathdoom adjacent thing but maybe some of you will dig it?
