PS I am on a bit of a Black N Roll kick at the moment in the vein of Taake's latest (Noregs Vaapen). Any recommendations are more than welcome. Plaag's album "UGH" seems pretty good.

Horna went after a similiar sound as Joel Grind is describing with their Sotahuuto album.

e: And if you have, by some strange chance, missed Barathrum's post-Eerie albums, you should definitely give Legions of Perkele a try. Featuring possibly the only black metal song to ever be featured on a karaoke DVD (yes, really):

God drat I just can't get enough of Naked Whipper and demo-era Impaled Nazarene, but unfortunately those are the only bands I know who played black/grind in a distinctly '90s style. Anyone have recommendations?

But that sounds just like regular norwegian black metal to me
To clarify, here is an example of the style I'm looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUUwQ5NaA0Q

I'm amazed how many bands make that main melody line sound like it's their own each time they use it. How many so far? Burzum, Bathory and Mayhem I think have used it, off the top of my head...

Don't forget Root's Pisen Pro Satana, which might be my favorite variation of it besides Necromansy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHYNOMKCSMc

I'm getting into black metal now, and Burzum is loving tight. What is up with his crazy loving ideas though? I'm scared to read the lyrics because I might find out these awesome tracks are about a bunch of stupid poo poo.

Anyway, I'm new to this genre but I'm really feeling it. I've listened to Ulver's first four records and Burzum's discography (among a few others). What are the classic, definitive black metal records I should check out?

Dunno about classic or definitive but you might like some of these bands if you like Burzum and Ulver:

Calling Fifteen Dead's Genesis an album might be cheating as it's just a compilation of their first demo and EP which both came out last year, but it's definitely the best thing I've heard all year. D-beat-heavy crust punk meets black metal that goes from furious to melancholic in a way I'm almost certain will be the next big thing in metal. It's up on bandcamp. Check out the EP's first track, Sunset, first.

In other news I can't stop listening to black/death metal at the moment, like Teitanblood. My problem is, Teitanblood seem to be leagues ahead of the other bands. I'm also enjoying Diocletian, Witchrist and Vassafor a fair bit though. Basically, I really like the murky, swampy rumble that these sorts of bands deliver. If anyone has similar stuff they could recommend it would be much appreciated. I've heard good things about Desolate Shrine?

I somehow missed a new Fifteen Dead release on the end of January. It's a split that, sadly, only has 1 Fifteen Dead track and it's the exact same version of Antitheist that was on their previous EP. The other band on the split however, Wölfe, is what I've been looking for ages. Raw, thrashy black metal meets old-school grindcore with really crazy vocals. The whole split is available for streaming at: http://www.cvltnation.com/the-wolfefifteen-dead-split/

edit: Their demo in it's entirety is also available for streaming, it's an absolute monster: http://www.cvltnation.com/untitledwolfe-i-review/

I think Satanic Warmaster made an interesting point about their use of some Nazi imagery, they said something along the lines of "We are not Nazis but we will use a Swastika to get a rise out of people and to be controversial, because upside down crosses just don't do it anymore."

My Dreams of Hitler by Satanic Warmaster posted:

The age of tragedies, my vision of a fallen empire
Like a lantern that burned out in ecstacy
Lighting the path of blood and honour into time
For eternity, forever reminding me... Forever changing time...

The man against time, in scorn against decline
One state, one folk, one leader, a true revelation
The purest essence of the cult of our blood
For infinity, flowing inside me... Forever binding me...

My dream of your empire
Fills me with joy
For it is also my fate
To end this life of strife in tragedy...

Live by the sword they say, thus I shall live
Let my words be my blade, let my songs be my spear

My dream of your empire
Fills me with joy
For it is also my fate
To end this life of strife in tragedy
...or supremacy.

I dunno, I think he might not be in it just for the shock value. The band name comes from a nazi black metal demo title too.

Anyone seen mgla live? I'm wondering if they're worth enduring an hour of Nargaroth for and then sitting around for 2 hours afterwards to get a bus ride home.

For reference: I think With Hearts Toward None is a pretty good, but not amazing, album and haven't heard any of their other stuff.

I always thought that Black Murder from the LLN was pretty chilling stuff for that style of black metal.

Black Murder's Feasts is by far the best LLN release, the only other ones that come even close are March to the Black Holocaust and Desecrate Jesus' Name.

For as many LLN copycat bands there are out there I'm surprised I've never really heard anyone try to go for the decrepit, creepy sound Black Murder nails so perfectly on that demo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V1JejmexVY
