I'm looking for a Sci-Fi book I started reading as a kid in the 80s but never finished it because it went over my head at that time.

All I remember is that it's about a boy that has some kind of atomic- or quantum disease and his mother, I think she was a physicist, was the only person that understood the nature of his disease. The book cover had some weird dragon-like beast on it with wings and eyes on the wings.
