Click here for the full 1280x768 image.

It's a lashed up Series 3, not a Defender. The only reason I'd buy that other than for parts is if it was dirt cheap, because here in the UK it's old enough to qualify for free road tax, and as such has an inherent value if it's got a registration document to back it up.

A real, coil-sprung 110 in better nick could be yours for that price, and they're old enough to import early models to the US now.

How much does it cost to get keys made for a car that doesn't have any to begin with? Couple hundred?
Older BMW lock barrels can be rebuilt to match a key. All you need is a pack of the shims and a key from another car, but having at least one compatible barrel to copy makes it a shitload easier.

That's well past any sort of restoration.

How is that even worth anything in his mind?
It's a fastback sixties Mustang, and while it may not have a title, it does have a VIN.

If that's good enough to get an effectively built-from-new-shell-and-parts car classified as a "restoration" of a '68, I'd view it as well worth the money. For example, here in the UK, it would mean I could keep the car in a free annual taxation band, get classic insurance, and be permitted much lower standards at the annual MOT (roadworthiness) inspection. I'd pony up $1k for that.

Of course, maybe I'm overthinking things, and it's the stereotypical "Sixties musclecar = worth munny" old-bastard-with-field-of-deteriorating-classics psychology.

Yeah, I've sold cars with issues that I could fix relatively easily just on a basis of "I'm sick of it and want it gone, and I've rationalised the hit I'll take on price".

Nope, they sold them in the UK as well as the rest of Europe. A good six-figure production run, too. Believe it or not, they were actually considered pretty cool for a brief period. Even with a 60bhp 1.4 :effort:.

I haven't seen one in the rust flesh for years though.

You know what would be a cool and interesting tool?

If the DMV allowed you to search or published model year and models of cars just to see how many are currently registered (hence, likely alive) in your province/state.
The DVLA has this facility, but I don't know how "publicly available" it is. Certainly, magazines like Practical Classics have a monthly "how many survive?" and "only XX left" columns based on the data.

This. They attract knobends like nothing this side of a base-model BMW, and you're buying a 30-year-old car with the last decade of owners being cunts who think they're Bunta Fujiwara.

The weird thing is, it's got no MOT, I looked it up. Lapsed in September 2015 (having done zero miles 2014-2015, and very few in the previous years). Nothing particularly standing out as especially "impending failure" on previous ones.

Why would you not at least take it for one?
