Can anyone give me a hypothetical situation in which it would make better financial sense to lease a vehicle than to buy it?

You're rich enough to not give half a crap about the payment, don't want to deal with maintenance, and want a shiny new car every two years.

If it wasn't for the tree branch falling on it part this would be gold:

I'd probably still take it even with tree damage for $200. Looks clean outside and in, even if the engine was totally hosed I have a 2.0L SPI in an Escort with a lovely exterior and finding a tranny to go with it wouldn't be too hard.

Plus if you were to take the hatch off it'd look like a miniature Ranchero. :3:

Of course I don't have room, time, or money for a project car :sigh:

You think this is an indication of fraud or something? I think you see that statement disproportionately on 2-seaters. (Also from misguided people selling 2-doors with back seats.)

To be fair it is a pain in the rear end using a baby seat in a 2+2. My mom drove a Maverick 2 door when I was born and my dad drove a Nova coupe. They sold the Maverick a few months later and bought a four door Buick Wildcat.

Most coupes and 3 door hatches have small back seats, and it can get tiring to have your kid's knees poking into your back.

Also folding seats forward and back every time you get in the car. It's just plain easier with a 4 door, even a compact one.

We also had an Escort hatchback. Oh god the all red vinyl interior and the horn on the signal stalk. :barf:

What kills me here is the huge rear end wing plus the turkeys walking around looking at it's awesomeness.

Even the turkey is unimpressed by this bullshit.

Between those two Broncos you have a complete working vehicle, probably. I know this snow makes me miss my mom's '96 4x4. It was a gas guzzler, the suspension was totally shot, but it just did not give a gently caress how deep or icy the snow was.

That does look very clean, and it has the proper spoiler on it. Wish my boss hadn't jacked his XR4Ti up so much, I like those little buggers. :( He decided "I WANT A RACE CAR" so he took one of the XRs he owned and had the motor built to hell for roundy round racing. It's far beyond his needs or ability to actually drive it, and now he bitches all the time because it idles rough and it's hard to drive on the street.

He has to take a back up car to races because the Merkur breaks down within a few laps, usually blowing a rocker arm off. He's got probably 50 or 60k into this car, including having a somewhat famous tuner and custom guy rebuild the engine. Also it has a Sierra Cosworth rip-off whale tail spoiler on it.

Undermining? I'm not familiar with this...is there software to increase your feedback score or something?

I believe there are scripts to automate the process but what a lot of scammers do is have multiple accounts buying and selling those 0.01 HOW TO MAKE MONEYZ AT EBAY and other such things ebooks. Leave ambiguous "GREAT SELLER A++" "GREAT BUYER A++" feedback, lather, rinse, repeat until you have a good feedback score. It works out to something like 50 cents per positive.

I know it's legal to buy suicide cars because one of our mechanics bought one from the son of the woman who blew her brains out in it. The son just threw a towel over the blood and drove it that way for a while. Now the carpet and seats (including towel and blood) are lying around the employee parking lot being gross. The other techs keep razzing him over his "haunted car."

The rear strut mounts rusting through is the death knell for a lot of Escort sedans as it's not safe to drive but the car is worth so little that it's more economical to buy something else than to have the body work done to repair it. Obviously this man was thinking outside the box.

This guy has an inventory of buses similar to this one. I am wondering about the effort in maintaining a 6.5L Duramax diesel with automatic transmission. He made it sound like the mileages ranged from 75k and up.

My grand idea is to rip out a majority of the seats and do road trips to rock climbing destinations, but perhaps the gearing would make it unsuitable for freeway travel (65mph at a reasonable RPM). It's pretty close to where I live so a friend and I might go check it out for fun, at least.

Lots of people turn old schoolbusses into DIY RVs. http://www.skoolie.net/forum/ has a buttload of info on various kinds of conversions and insurance/registration in various states.

Does a dying (or just anything-less-than perfect?) battery cause permanent damage, or is it something that is fixed when the battery is replaced?

It can cause damage, although it's usually only in certain cases. Like powerstroke diesels, if you run it on a failing battery your FICM will burn out.

It's an F-350 with a V10 that's shortened and bobbed in the back with all kinds of off-roading goodies. He seemed to spare no expense with stuff--ARB air lockers, KC lights, Warn winch, etc. are all top of the line and pretty expensive. This is on top of the stout as hell F350 platform (Dana 60 front axle and Dana 80 rear!). The chopping looks very clean in photos and the overall proportions of the truck are badass. I bet this guy has at least 4x the asking price in accessories and work done to it. $6300 OBO seems like a hell of a steal. I tried to convince my friend to look at it but he hates Fords. :(

I bet he gets asked if that's a Raptor frequently.

I know where there is a 0 mile 2002 Ford Thunderbird. It is stored in one of those bubbles in a climate controlled garage. We made the final delivery of it, put it up on jack stands, and stacked the tires in the corner. It was never driven, only pushed on and off of trailers. Last time i saw him it was still in the same place i left it. I still don't think it's worth what he paid for it when he bought it new.

It's definitely not, the 00s T-bird was a really awful car to begin with. All the customers at my job that drive and like them are huge douchebags, leading to the cars' nickname of "douchemobile".
