The palm pilot is a useful dtalogger setup, but I think the guy is too stupid to understand how it functions.

Personally, I love to buy cars from people like that. After two dozed tire kickers came and went, I would show up with a grand in cash and offer to transfer the title RIGHT NOW. You'd be surprised how often it works. Stock 5speed GSXs of that vintage are worth 4-6K to the right buyer. All I'd have to do is remove the rice parts and maybe change a couple of syncros in the transmission.

So, I'm a poor college student in Michigan looking to get a summer job as a wilderness firefighter out west- possibly Washington, New Mexico, or Alaska. I will have to drive across the country in a couple of days, with all my clothes & poo poo, and probably will sleep in my car.

So I'm wondering what the expert opinions are on the following Chevy s10 pickup:
http://detroit.craigslist.org/cto/1029889614.html

"Got a 1991 Chevy S-10 standard cab, 4.3l with no leaks, has a 5-Speed that shifts real good and has a topper. Has a little over 133,000 miles with a fresh oil change. Real good truck that starts up everytime. 1195$ OBO no reasonable offer refused."

Make sure you start it when it's cold and drive it around till it's fully warmed up. If no issues are apparent and brakes, tires, clutch, and body are fine, it might be a good deal even at asking price. Haggle still. Good luck.

But is it 19 grand worth of nice? How much is that engine worth?

Just by looking at the car, here is a quick list of how much was spent:

LS2 transplant ~ $2,500-5,000
GTO interior bits ~ $300-500
Install kit ~ $1,000-1,500
Labor cost to install if paid to a qualified shop is over $4,000
Wheels and tires ~ $1,500-2,000
Boddykit and hood are at least a grand, not counting custom install and quality-looking paint. Think upward of $6,000
There is no mention of other upgrades, but we can assume at least a coil over kit.

If he dropped the car off at a shop and said "make it so", then he spent more than that asking price. If his asking price was 10 grand, I'd be driving it home. A handy DIYer can replicate it for much less, but at enormous time and labor expense. Knowing what the similar cars have sold for, this would go like hotcakes once he drops the price under 15 grand.
