You can sometimes get closer to something you're looking for by searching through application notes. The big chip manufacturers have searchable databases, and sometimes it can be a little easier to figure out what's useful if you see, say, 'circuit for measuring power draw' as opposed to 'current accumulator'. That, and familiarity. Nothing beats experience.
