That’s not really accurate. The characters aren’t stopping to sing through plot points. It’s a crime movie that takes place within the reggae scene, with the title track being a single that one of them records and that plays several times in the movie. IIRC it was a hit in the UK and led directly to the two tone ska movement.

This is all I need to hear to watch the movie.

I've got the barest understanding of the evolution of ska and reggae underpinned by an enjoyment of the music. This feels like history is need to know.

it's a turning point for jamaican culture on the world stage, yeah. if you really wanna go in on the history and development of the music in that period---and how it crossed the ocean to the UK with the windrush generation, i'd also suggest the ten-part 1983 bbc radio documentary "from mento to lover's rock"
