ultrafilter posted:The short answer is that you should go in chronological order. I don't care for Black Sabbath without Ozzy, so I can't speak to those albums. Black Sabbath and Paranoid are must-haves for any metal fan, and the next two (Masters of Reality and Vol. 4) are up there too. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage may be worth picking up if you really like what you've heard so far. Just get the Ozzy and Dio Black Sabbath stuff, skip anything else Black Sabbath ever released. For the Dio years, get Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. They released another album with Dio later on (Dehumanizer) but I can't comment on it since I've never heard it. For me, the Dio Sabbath was a much stronger band, the songs were much better IMO. Much better song craftsmanship. I'm not saying that Ozzy era Sabbath was bad, I enjoy Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Vol. 4 a lot.

I picked up Sieg Howdy just for the hell of it near a year ago now, and I really dug that one, but with 19 studio albums that apparently are crazy varied and all good I really don't have any idea where to move on from there. Houdini is really easy to get into, it came out during the whole grunge explosion and has some of the less abrasive songs. Stoner Witch is another album that is a pretty easy listen. Not sure where to go from there since those are the only two albums I own of theirs. ![]()

Maybe I just don't get the album, but I hate it. I love After the Gold Rush and Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere. I think a lot of what he does with Crazy Horse is pretty good. Also, Live Rust is a pretty solid album.

QuickbreathFinisher posted:Hopefully no one asked this already: Black Sabbath was answered a few pages back. Get their first two albums, Black Sabbath, Paranoid. Then you can venture out and check out Masters of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabatoge and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (this is my favorite), but definitely start with at least the first 2 albums and skip the last two with Ozzy. You can then move on to Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules!, those are both with Dio and both are very solid albums. In addition to the Black Sabbath with Dio, pick up his "solo" albums Holy Diver and Last in Line. If you're feeling adventerous, you can also check out Rainbow, get Richie Blackmore's Rainbow and Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. Both feature Dio on vocals, this was the band he was in before joining Sabbath (he was in Elf prior, who aren't so bad, mostly blues rock). For Ozzy's solo stuff I'd check out Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, both really solid albums and they have Randy Rhodes of course. Then I'd get No Rest For The Wicked, the first album with a young Zack Wylde. Not too sure about his most recent stuff. But those 3 should get you started.

Halloween posted:Disregarding the similarities to Satellite that you're requesting, you should start with "& Nico" just because it's the best album. Thanks. I got that album and like it, reminds me of Sonic Youth. I'll probably end up buying the other two albums they released before Lou Reed left.

And sorry, I forgot about Loaded.

I'm gonna get poo poo for this, but do they have anything you could compare to 3oh!3? I've never heard 3oh!3 so I have no idea. I'd start with "Check Your Head" from the Beastie Boys first. It's probably the best way to get into them. Then I'd check out "Ill Communication" for more of their rap side. From there go on to "Hello Nasty." I've not heard "The Mix-Up" so I can't comment on that album, but I do know it's all instrumental. Stay away from "To the 5 Boroughs" and "License To Ill." Paul's Boutique is an amazing album, but check those first two I mentioned to get a feel for the Beasties if you've never really listened to them. EDIT - After just listening to 3oh!3 on Last.fm, I can safely say that the Beastie Boys are nothing like that band at all. flirty dental hygienist fucked around with this message at 02:56 on May 14, 2009 |

cryme posted:If you want solid Iron Maiden albums, you want the self titled and Killers. Everything else they've done is about a 50/50 mix of good tracks and absolute garbage. You're better off picking up a live album or compilation. This is crazy talk! Paul Di'Anno didn't suit Maiden's style at all, he was more of a rock singer or punk even. They really took off when they got Bruce Dickenson, he has a much better vocal range and fits the epic nature of their songs. That said, those first two albums are classic, but not really a good way to get into Iron Maiden. I'd start off with Live After Death, it's the best album to get a feel for their stuff. If you like that then get Number of the Beast and Powerslave. After that you can go forward and pick up some of their newer releases, Brave New World is really solid. Just avoid the 3 albums with Blaze Bayley on them.

hatelull posted:the Dots have a formidable discography, and I think most everyone offers their favorite album as a good starting point. For me, that would be Crushed Velvet Apocalypse. The early material is psychedelic pop, while the latter stuff will play more in the experimental arena if that helps you at all. With a band with their amount of material, it becomes what you want to hear and there's not really a wrong answer. I like Tear Garden and Skinny Puppy a lot and have Tired Eyes Slowly Burning and The Last Man To Fly. That's why I wanted to hear some LPD. I'd guess I'm more interested in the psych/pop stuff rather than the experimental stuff. I'll check out Crushed Velvet Apocalypse since there seems to be a general consensus about that being a good album. beergod posted:How about : The Melvins - I'd go with Houdini and (A) Senile Animal. Houdini was probably their biggest album, with videos being showed on Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes. It came out at the peak of alternative/grunge. (A) Senile Animal has the Melvins teaming up with the two members from Big Business (who they'd go on to do 2 more albums with this line-up). It introduces a "new" sound for the Melvins, it's one of my favorites from them. If you like those, then I'd suggest getting Lysol, Stag, and Bullhead. The Maggot, Bootlicker, and Crybaby trilogy are interesting as well. 3 very different albums all released in 2000. Mudhoney - I'm only familiar with Superfuzz Bigmuff, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, and Piece of Cake. Those are 3 really solid albums though, but I think EGBDF would be a great starting point.
