Plain Bagels posted:I loved everything Sonic Youth did on Daydream Nation, specifically Teenage Riot, Eric's Trip, and Candle. Where should I go from there? That's a tough one. In terms of accessibility, I would go with Murray Street or work backwards to Sister and EVOL.

Almond Crunch posted:this might be stupid because i get the feeling that they're already a stupidly easy band to get into, but where should i start with death cab for cutie? I would go with either Wowee Zowee or Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Slanted and Enchanted is their best, but it takes some getting used to.

How do I get into Current 93? I've listened to some of their stuff and it just seems like crazy poetry set against medieval music. Is that the point or something?

Yoshifan823 posted:Alright, I've got all of his Velvet Underground stuff, what do I do after if I want some more Lou Reed? For Lou Reed I would go with Transformer. For the Rolling Stones, I'm not much of a fan, but I would try a greatest hits just because of the sheer volume of good albums they had. David Bowie is a tough one though. I got in to him with a combination of Ziggy Stardust and Scary Monsters even though my favorite album is Low. But thinking about it now, I would pick up Hunky Dory first; it is more folkish but really shows Bowie in his prime. New Order's Substance is a very huge album, but is worth picking up. The Pet Shop Boys, however, I have almost no clue about. Hope this wall of text helped

shpladoinkle posted:I heard a few Mountain Goats songs here and there in the past but I'd like to go and get one of their albums to start getting into them. I'm kinda unsure about lo-fi stuff, but I guess I might be able to think past it if I have to. What's the best album to start off with? Hands down it's The Sunset Tree. It's arguably their best album and contains their strongest set of songs. From there I would head down the timeline to Tallahassee. And by the time you are done with those two, you should be able to enjoy his lo-fi works, but specifically All Hail West Texas, which sometimes trades spots with The Sunset Tree as my favorite album by them.

® posted:Where do I start with Pavement? This was mentioned before, but I would go with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain since it is a ton less abrasive and lo-fi than Slanted & Enchanted, even though my favorite is the latter. Honestly though, you could possibly spring for any album due to Pavement's great consistency between releases, so I'll make a list of the poppiest/most immediate song on each of their albums. If you like one more than the others, spring for that album. There really isn't a weak Mountain Goats release, and the best thing to do is download his back catalog one by one and work with that. Though to help you out, I would go with Zipotle Machine.

Breakfast Cereal posted:Where should I start with The Decemberists? I've had them on my MP3 player for ages and have yet to delve in. Picaresque is definitely their best and my personal favorite, followed by Castaways and Cutouts and Her Majesty. The Crane Wife, although really really good, should be left until you've listened to the first three. Hazards of Love is was a nice risky album, but is obviously their worst (which isn't saying much considering how consistent they are).

KevinHeaven posted:where should I start with ween? Like many other bands mentioned on this thread, Ween happens to be very consistent, but your best bet would be Chocolate and Cheese coupled with The Mollusk. Both albums show off almost as many genres as tracks and are catchy to boot, but if you can only have one, go with The Mollusk (which might be my favorite album of all time). From their go either direction, though you might want to come back to 12 Country Greats after White Pepper and Quebec. Everything from Pure Guava back is excellent but extremely weird and less accessible than their middle couple albums. The only album you should watch out for is their second: The Pod. It is weird as gently caress but not horrible, just so sooo murky and hazy.

the Bunt posted:Animal Collective? I hate MPP except for the singles. Does all their stuff sound like new age Beach Boys with annoying synth loops? The synth loops are a pretty new addition to Animal Collective. Up until Strawberry Jam, they had little to no electronics and focused more on an organic freak-folk sound. You might like Feels, even though it tends to meander, it's practically as analog and freewheeling as AC could get. Here Comes the Indian/Danse Manatee/Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished are about as opposite as you could get compared to MPP, but are extremely experimental and challenging (as in Danse's and HCTI's case).

I've only listened to Same Old Drag off New Magnetic Wonder and I love it, but I'm overwhelmed by the number of albums they have out. If you like that song go with New Magnetic Wonder. All of their stuff is great 60's through 70's style pop, but NMW is definitely a ton more accessible.

ProperCoochie posted:The New Pornographers? Any of their first three albums is a great starting place. Some would argue that Mass Romantic would be the best place, but I have a tendency to lean towards Twin Cinema. It sounds more polished and always felt more balanced than anything else in their catalog.
