Just bought my first jeep yesterday. Somehow I convinced my wife that this was the ideal second vehicle for our family

Its a warn 8000lb one. I'm not sure of the exact model. The previous owner put it on. He didn't however put on bumpers with recovery points so that is on the todo list. This list is getting disturbingly long already.

It always does. Is that just the actual bumper with the plastic cover removed? That's a pretty common thing, but makes winches/fairleads look weird.

I think so. I don't know if the TJ ever had a plastic cover though. I'm liking this bumper a lot at the moment.

Sell the hard top for at least $800 and get a soft top and some side protection/sliders to make it less practical but way more awesome.

I have a bestop soft top that came with it that looks to be in good condition. Living in raincouver though I'm planning on running the hard top in the winter and soft top in the summer.

I'm thinking of putting the smittybilt xrc rock sliders on it to replace the factory steps. They seem to be pretty solid and not crazy money.

Well I'm going to leave it on for this winter and put the soft top on in the spring. Maybe I'll see how that goes into next fall and if its all good I'll ditch the hard top then. I agree that soft tops look infinitely better.

Other than how heavy it was. It was HEAVY.

Also it wasn't easy to store.

I've seen quite a few setups online where people winch them up to the garage roof and suspend them there. I might do that but behind our back balcony. Its kind of like a shed with no walls there anyway

It can coexist happily with the lawn mower and weed wacker etc.

If Smittybilt makes a product you're almost guaranteed to find another company that makes it way better and for only a little more cost. Their finishes are bad, sometimes the welding is crap, and they use thinner gauge metal sometimes.

Good to know. I've seen that rep about them. The reviews etc for their newer xrc stuff seems to be pretty positive though compared to their older stuff.

I'm planning on going out on some noob runs with the local jeep club before buying anything. Mostly so I can see what other people are using in person. From reading a bunch of jeepforum threads it seems that Smittybilt stuff runs the gamut from unadulterated garbage to actually pretty decent depending on the specific thing.

A guy on a local club board is raving about these. Carried in one of the offroad shops locally as well. They look pretty solid. I want something that has a tube for step purposes. My kiddos are pretty short :3:

Edit: Beaten like Smittybilt sliders on a mild trail.

Before you go ordering, shop a few of the big sites (XT, quadratec, rockridge, etc). Jeepforum, wranglerforum, etc. They almost all have reps that actively post, and some offer a discount of 10% or free shipping or something like that if you PM the rep. XT does free shipping and advertises on wranglerforum...free shipping on a loving steel bumper is a nice perk.

Cheers thats cool. I'm in Canada so I already have to deal with :shepspends: shipping from a lot of places. Though we have a local 4wheelparts that has free pickup in store. I can also get stuff just shipped to Point Robert and drive down to pick it up if I have to.

First upgrade I think I'm actually going to do is a halogen headlight conversion. These stock sealed beams are pretty crappy and halogen kits are pretty cheap.

Ehhh, the real answer here is to use this as an excuse to buy:
- 1 100 amp fluxcore welder, not HF
- 1 auto darkening welding mask
- 1 4.5" angle grinder
- at least 1 foot of 1/2" round solid steel rod stock at home depot
- 1 1/2" fender washer
- 1 big rear end cotter pin

Bore a hole through the steel rod stock about 1/2" from the end sized for the cotter pin. This is so the washer and cotter pin act as retainers for the rubber bushing since you can't forge a knob/ridge onto it like the factory one. Bend a right angle in the rod stock about where the stock bend is leaving the rubber bushing. Cut this whole mess to length so it goes down to the bottom of the exhaust tube next to it, jack the exhaust up 1/2", booger weld it onto the pipe, insert cotter pin and washer.

Now you've spent 500 bucks on a 200 dollar fix, but you have welding toys!

That is how most of the tools in my garage have appeared. Buy a playhouse kit for $500. No Buy $500 of tools and $500 of wood and build one instead :getin:

I decided to take a punt on one of those cheap ebay bumpers for my TJ and I'm pretty happy with it so far. I got it all mounted up today and it is a massive improvement over the stripped stock bumper with a RC winch plate bolted to it. The fit is good and the welds are nice and straight and solid. I'm going to replace the seal ASAP - I've seen a couple of videos where people mark the pinion nut's position to the shaft in order to return the nut as close as possible to the original position. What are the odds that I get the nut off, replace the seal, replace the nut and have problems? Another thing I read said to torque the nut to 50lbs, as that won't further crush the crush sleeve, but that sounds like jeeper mythology to me.

I have to do this on my d35 rear pinion seal as well. From what I've read you most likely can get away with just doing the seal and tightening the nut back into its original position with a bit of locktite. It is certainly not the "correct" way to do it which involves a new crush sleeve and I think screwing around with the gears etc. I'm planning on swapping my rear axle out in the future for an 8.8 so if I'm wrong and I destroy something that will just make that happen faster

Yeah I love the look of those. Only issue is price. I'll probably just get some plastic 6" flares to last the next year or so. I've found some on ebay for about $150usd. That way I don't get hassled and can do something fancier later on. I'm planning on more lift and bigger tires at some point in the next couple of years and probably an 8.8 rear axle and locker so I'd rather spend money on that stuff first.
