Quick question, does anyone use speed handles anymore?
The occasional old-school motorcycle mechanic does, but it's not that common of a practice on cars these days. You've got to go really old-school on cars to find a guy that uses one. Same with T-handles.

I used a speed handle working on my first airplane. Except it used a motorcycle engine. And I only used it for the four bolts that affixed the engine frame to the bulkhead. If you've got room for a speed bar, you can use a cordless impact gun.

Don't those Craftsman's have a lifetime no-questions-asked store replacement warranty?

It's true, but c-man ratchets have gone downhill in quality pretty badly since Danaher took the reins. The Craftsman standard 1/4" ratchet is easily one of the worst ratchets money can buy; after a little while, the pawl mechanism just stops working (sometimes it doesn't work right on a brand new one). Their 3/4" ratchets are still pretty cool :haw: but what the hell are you going to use that for?

Craftsman half inch ratchets suck, it seems like in order to use weaker material they put about three steps on the ratchet. It doesn't turn freely at all.

My gf got me this for my birthday:

Husky 151 piece ratchet set. Has 3/8 & 1/2" ratchets, along with almost every size I can think of. Coming from the only ratchet I own being a lovely jobmate 3/8" one that I broke, I'm excited :D Lifetime warrenty on all of it, no questions asked. Apparently its Home Depot's brand.

The video on the ratchets answers the question if the dual 80 ratchets from snapon were US made or not.

Some guys got all :tinfoil: over that Snap On does not have Made in the USA stamped on the dual 80's. I was told by 2 sources that they were, but some figure it's a conspiracy to remove the country of origin on their products so they can have a few chinese/french tools added to the mix under the snap on banner and increase their profit margin.

At the end of the day, I don't care where SnapOn makes their tools, so long as the product lasts as long as it should and they still honor their warranty when it breaks. It's why I dumped craftsman. :(

I wish I could afford goddamn Snap-On tools. My grandfather was a construction machine and dump truck mechanic at one time and has some loving amazing tools. I learned the value of Snap-On the other day when my Harbor Freight drum brake tool crapped out in the middle of my spring change and I had to run to his place to borrow it. What took me about 5 minutes to accomplish by trying to line up the spring stretcher on the HF special took me literally 10 seconds with the Snap-On. It seems they just thought everything out when they made it, every cut and forged piece fitting perfectly making drat near everything I did incredibly simple.

I decided I should buy a good tool like this then logged onto the Snap-On website and saw they were charging $85 for it, instead of the $15 I had paid for the HF unit. :negative: I will never be able to afford Snap-On tools.

edit: Ughhh why must you be so expensive and so excellent

Hakko 936 or nothing. It heats up fast, keeps a steady temperature, is static-safe, parts, including a variety of tips are readily available. Heck, it's even the same price as your link.

I noticed craftsman branded foreign imports of hand tools is more and more widespread, and not just the cheap tools either.

I picked up a flare wrench set. It was in the bubble plastic under the Craftsman professional brand but one wrench was missing, and they didn't have a replacement in that size on the rack, but they said another Sears in Hawthrone had 5 flare wrench sets in stock. So off I went.

So I drove down tonight picked up the flare wrench set which was in slightly different packaging [no plastic case]. Same price. Made in China [the other set in Santa Monica was made in the USA for the same price].

:argh: gently caress it, I'll take it back and get a Proto Industrial or SK set.

On a side note, my Diversion 180 TIG welder is awesome. I didn't know I could enjoy something so productive as a relaxing way to wind down from the work day. It's highly portable, so if you get into TIG and need to do field work, go get one. Otherwise... get the syncrowave - the AC controls are worth it. (I still have no regrets)

Yeah, I understand every manufacturer has an import brand but it's pretty sneaky to list stuff on the website with the same brand and design as US made, forged, then repackage it and have an import version at the same price.

Found out there was a Grainger around the corner and got a US made Proto/Blackhawk set for $10 more. :D

I assisted my neighbor with getting a Subaru STi ready for clutch replacement and I am sold on the awesomeness of wobbly sockets. They are far superior to u-joints in flexibility and power (torque, whatever) transfer.

Now, should I spend the money on a premium brand set or just get them from HF. I use my tools quite a bit, but I am just a hobbyist, not a pro. The HF sets are waaaay cheaper.
I had a 20% coupon so I went ahead and bought a set of HF metric impact swivel (wobbly) sockets. I think it ended up being something like $23 for the set. It included the useful sizes from 12-21mm.

I have used them a couple times on some suspension work with my Snap-On cordless electric impact gun and nothing has broken off in my face so far.

When I was there I saw a set of something called through sockets. It looked like a 3/4" ratcheting offset wrench and a bunch of adapters for smaller standard and metric sizes. If I already have a set of ratcheting wrenches that I like I take it these are a waste of toolbox space and money?

I got a free air compressor on Craigslist. Dude was getting rid of it because it "didn't work" and he was moving. Turns out he just left in the plug in the intake that you're supposed to remove and replace with an air filter. I guess he tried to turn it on, and it popped the breaker. So, after pushing the button on the breaker and removing that plug (need to find an air filter for it, didn't come with) it pumped right up to its max pressure without any noticeable leaks. Time to go hunting garage sales for air tools! :D

I didnt know matco owned fluke. I chalked it up to just the usual snap-on rear end reaming prices. We dont have a matco guy at my work nor have I ever worked somewhere that had one so I always priced the fluke meters with a snap-on or mac dealer and the prices always suck. I just bought that package because I have more leads and test probes than I ever need from old meters and kits that I bought plus all the different setups that I made for different connectors.

I've never had a problem with even more "liberal interpretations" of HF's discounts. If the cashier doesn't want to do it, just ask for a manager, who pretty much rubber-stamps anything that's not unreasonable.
