I just want to let people know that True Value sometimes has very cheap tools in their clearance bins. It usually contains sockets at my local store, and I have no idea if any other stores even do this.

These sockets were in a bin marked $1 each:

This is definitely a ymmv situation, but it might be worth a look if you need some big rear end sockets for cheap.

There were many more smaller sockets in the bin and I'm thinking about going back for more.

Everyone should have that breaker bar. I have the 1/2" and the 3/4" plus a few smaller BBs I inherited. Free tools are the best.

That 1/2" breaker works great for just about everything, but it's juuuust barely too small for really stubborn axle nuts. I use it anyway since I'm too cheap to get a 3/4", and it gets kind of scary putting your whole body weight on the 1/2" and watching the gap where the swivel is attached open up almost half an inch.

Really? I like this... how powerful is it? I can see myself needing one of those at some point.

I see an emergency 12V one for $30, and a Chicago brand one for $70... though really, that price is not bad either. Is that the durable one you speak of?

I have this one, and it works well for just about everything I've needed it for. It is too weak to remove larger rusty suspension bolts on a Jeep Cherokee though. It wouldn't take off the U-Bolt nuts, and definitely not the front and rear leaf spring bolts. It does have the power for the majority of other things I've used it for though.

Oh, and it was on sale for $40 when I bought it.

So, does anybody know where I could find a 1/2" drive, 6-point 22mm swivel socket?

I need the swivel to be on the socket, I don't have the room for an adapter. I need about .25" more.

I have the older version of this drill and it's been my go to drill for over a decade now.

I picked up one of these from Menards a few years ago and it has worked out rather nicely as well. I couldn't tell you anything about what kind of RPMs it turns though.

edit: apparently up to 1500 RPM according to the amazon ad.

I went to Lowe's today for a 3/8 drive universal. A single universal was $9 and this kit that included the exact same one was $20, so I bought it instead. It seems like an excellent value for only $20, just to have a small set to keep in the car or something. And the ratchet actually feels pretty good too.

Am i clinically loving retarded, or is it really hard to get a decent double flare on steel tubing? I bought the kit from Napa, and have tried to make flares about twenty times. They all suck, are lopsided, and I'm sure won't seal. I'm deburring the inside of the tubing, I'm making sure the cut is square, and following every trick I've read online. What the gently caress.

I'm assuming you're using a standard double flare tool kit , with the clamp and little round inserts with a peg in the middle. First, make sure your cut is clean and straight. Then, make sure when you clamp it in the tool that it is sticking up about 1/4 inch (about the height of the top, disc part of the tools insert),and make sure that it is clamped down really drat tight. Use a screwdriver to turn the wingnuts if you have to. I'm sure you know the rest, use the insert tool first, then the tapered cone shaped clamp thing second.

I had trouble too when I first started, and it all stemmed from not getting the steel tubing clamped down tight enough in the holding clamp.

I don't want to be patronizing but maybe this will help http://www.fordification.com/tech/doubleflare.htm

e: you probably already know this too, but using a bench vise to secure the clamp, it makes it much easier than trying to hold it in your hand.

I'm probably going to be picking up an electric impact wrench this weekend. Is the $50 harbor freight one w/ 230 lb/ft a good one?

It works ok, especially for the price. Don't expect too much and you'll be happy with it. I think I got mine for like $40 with the coupon. If you have a compressor though, I STRONGLY recommend going with an air powered impact. I use this one daily: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00919984000P?prdNo=3&blockNo=3&blockType=G3 and it is a poo poo ton better than the harbor freight electric one.

The Snap On truck must have these on sale or something, I know two people that have bought these in the last week. They are pretty awesome boxes, especially in extreme green. Do you mind saying what you paid for it? Just curious to compare it to what the guy I work with paid for his.

I've done under 10 ball joints. The most effective method i've come across is a pickle fork and beating the everliving gently caress out of it. It's worked ok for me, and relieves stress, too.

I do ball joint at work pretty often and I've never used a pickle fork. For example it is especially bad to use if you're removing a steering knuckle to have a new bearing pressed in. It makes the customer much happier if you can save their old ball joints and tie rod ends and not have to install new ones. This is the method I've always used.

very rarely would this method work here in the rust belt (wisconsin). Pickle forks, larger hammers, and heat are often required.

It works a lot better than you might think. Sometimes you really have to hit it hard though. Just like the poster above me I don't own a pickle fork and have never used heat. It still amazes me every time I do it how they just come out by hitting with a hammer. And I'm in Michigan so rusty poo poo boxes are about all I work on.

I have this one and it is pretty bad rear end. They were on sale on the truck for $80 though, not sure I'd pay $143.

Oh it's an awesome ratchet, I have ratchets in my box from Mac, matco, Cornwell, proto, craftsman, SK, gearwrench, even harbor freight, and nothing matches the quality of snap on's dual 80.

I have a matco 88 tooth BFR118T that comes close, but the ratcheting mechanism is a little loose for my taste, and the reverse lever gets stuck sometimes.

Never had any problems or complaints with my snap on ratchets. I like the f80 the best and it is my go to ratchet, even though the fhx80 is "better".

A Snap On roller cabinet is not worth $2000 over the "us general" one at harbor freight.

On the other hand in many automotive shops at least, you're not just buying a box, you're also buying respect. I hate to admit it but as someone said earlier, if you want to be taken seriously as a professional, buy the good poo poo. If you're an experienced technician you'd better not be rolling Harbor Freight Chinese steel into your first day at a new dealership.

Please note that I don't agree with this sentiment, but it can be the reality of some work places.
