Yeah. Iím all for visible wear on poo poo that actually gets used daily. Watches, rings, tools, guns, etc. Cosmetic wear caused by honest use tends to look good.

As a bonus it also looks natural and you can pick it out from the artificially distressed poo poo at a glance.

My "nicer" watch for when I'm in a suit is a Citizen world time because I do a shitload of international travel and I like being able to switch the time zone easily, and it's cheap enough that I don't feel bad banging it up.

My beater watch is a $10 Casio.

I have a Seiko 5 autowinder as my daily wear. It's about time to replace the strap. I have a nicer Seiko with a metal band for dress up. And i have GPS smart watch from Garmin but I can not find the charging cable 😣

It would take me a million years to find my copy in The Stacks, but there was a MAD Magazine article in the late '50s, early '60s titled "Snob Appeal vs. Slob Appeal" that featured the same products as marketed to either hoity-toity upper class douchebags or lower class lowlifes, and one of the products was a fancy watch; the Snob was showing it off while tossing dice on a craps table at a fancy casino, while the Slob had it turned around so the metal band was an ad hoc brass knuckles he was using to knock the teeth out of a guy in an illegal sidewalk craps game.

Now I'm imagining Aldrin deliberately wearing multiple watches with heavy-rear end bands just so he can switch 'em around and lay out any conspiracy goofballs who accost him.

I always wore my watch on the inside left wrist. Some old Grunt showed me as a kid, and explained why (primary hand stays on weapon when you check the time/compass, inside less likely to flash light, and less likely to bang into something and break), and I never lost the habit, even though that poo poo is no longer pertinent in my life.

I've heard the "less likely to hit the face on stuff when it's inside the wrist" thing but when I tried it, I ended up bashing the face on poo poo more, so I stopped.

Re: wristchat, my wrists are comically tiny. Part of the reason I hated the GIGANTOR watch crazy of the 2000s, because they looked even more comically-huge on my tiny baby wrists. I don't have massive hands though--I normally wear medium gloves, although my fingers are quite long and skinny. They can be a little too long for some gloves to be comfortable, so I sometimes size-up to a large if I don't need to worry about fine motor stuff.

That was in a kickstarter along with a folding scalpel (which I got) and I could not for the life of me understand the enthusiasm for this thing.

The folding scalpel is cool but smaller than I expected. It was still worthwhile for getting exposed blades out of my model building tools.

I've had the same watch since 2007 and have yet to replace the batteries (solar built in to the face). Its survived a lot of abuse. Some of the buttons are finicky and or stiff now, but it still tells time to the atomic second with the waveceptor function that still works.

Do folks not keep the plastic caps that come with their scalpels, or use a roll?

moths
Aug 25, 2004

Those caps don't really hold up so well. Typically you'll either lose it or it'll wear out to the where it falls off (and you lose it.)

I don't know what you mean by a roll.

Cyrano4747

Back when I did model making poo poo Iíd always just make a scalpel sheath by folding some thick paper or thin cardboard over and taping it.

I lost them constantly but since they were basically free whatever.

Cyrano4747
Sep 25, 2006

Oh and actual medical scalpels come in these foil wrapper things that do a good job of not letting you stab yourself. If youíre careful opening those they can be reused for covering your blade when not in use.

moths
Aug 25, 2004

I use those but I feel like it would be more dangerous to keep removing the blade to return to the pouch. Unless you mean sliding the foil over the whole scalpel top - that's a good idea.

I have dumb cats, though, so I'm preferential to something they couldn't possibly hurt themselves on.

It's literally a fabric roll with pouches in it, sort of like what a chef would use for their kitchen knives but smaller and for dorks. I used one when I was working in a model building shop because it made it easier to gather my tools up and take them home so they didn't wander off.

I've also gotten into the habit of treating those plastic caps like the cap on a pen-- it just goes onto the back of the handle while the blade is in use and thus tends to get lost less often. But I can see why a folding or extendable blade option would work really well for some folks too!

Ok yeah that roll sounds like a great alternative also, and I'm just as bad with pen caps.

I wonder if a scalpel that you could spin a #11 blade into the handle for a "safe" position might be the best solution. A retractable design would be crazy cumbersome, but something like this would be cool:

Yeah. Both the foil pouch and the DIY card stock sheaths were slipped over the blade still on the handle.

Donít take your blades on and off. Thatís when youíre most at risk of cutting yourself. Every scalpel related cut more serious than a band aid requiring nick was while putting on or removing a blade. Really you should have a pair of forceps or at least a good set of needle nose pliers to do it right.

If you need to keep your cats out of them put the sheathed scalpel in a box that latches. Back in the day that was an old tackle box for me with other hobby poo poo in it.

I use a tacklebox for storing that and anything toxic (glue, solvents, etc) but it's the "I only looked away for a minute..." anxiousness that makes an instant closure preferable while it's on the table.

Now I wonder how many inventions were driven by anxiety. Probably a lot.
