Echoing the love for The Residence, I'm up to episode 6 now and still really enjoying it. The preview actually primed me to not like it because it seemed a lot like a Monk-style "look at how quirky and weird this detective is!" kind of thing, but fortunately it's not that.

I somehow went into it blind not knowing even what it was, and I was confused why half the cast were in a comedy and the rest a drama. Then the quirky detective showed up and I was like "oh, this is a quirky murder mystery" and it all made sense. Otherwise I was very confused before that.

I lean to this interpretation as well. Fortitude has the downbeat fishing plot, the tense witness protection plot, the political plot, the sci-fi monster plot ... It's a mad, mad mix and they constantly tried to up the ante.

Watched the last season of Umbrella academy pretty much on one sitting last weekend.

I don't get why it gets as much hate as it does around the net. The outcome is pretty telegraphed from the beginning of the series, they are a group of incompetent and/or rear end in a top hat superheroes who keep causing the end-of-the-world-event no matter how many times they switch timelines or get to retry fixing it, so they need to just stop existing, and it wraps up all the character storylines with few minor exceptions, and the characters not mentioned in S4 were already gone after the universe rebooted last time at the end of S3 so they probably just ceased to exist. It wasn't bad, it was still perfectly watchable last season and closing chapter of a show that peaked on season 2.

For a six-episode season it was a bit slow-paced for 2-3 episodes anyway so I don't see how having more episodes could have helped. I mean, Klaus and Allison pretty much just play family and beat up a biker gang, which had absolutely nothing to do with the main plot, and then show up for the finale.

If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. Only the first two seasons though. The final season falls apart in a way that would make GoT jealous.

This is still one of the most incredible nosedives ever. Like you have to see it to believe it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm season 6 was some weird transitional season, huh? What was the reaction to it at the time? Specifically moving the new family in and the divorce.

Edit: Season 7 seems like what this has all been leading up to from the start.

I finished The Residence and I'd say it managed to stick the landing. The whole thing ended up being quite convoluted, as a proper whodunnit should be, but it didn't feel contrived or abitrary. Uzo Aduba really elevated the whole thing as the lead, she manages to tread the fine line between being a bit quirky while never coming off as annoying. The editing did feel a bit hyperactive at times, but overall I didn't mind it.

I just finished binging the new Korean drama Hyper Knife. It's about a disgraced black-market surgeon and her teacher.

The writing and production value reminds me of Hannibal, and the acting is top notch. Check it out, even if Korean dramas aren't your thing.

Just finished The Leopard, about an aristocratic family slowly disintegrating in mid 19th century Italy.

Short review: good but not for everyone.

Long review: it took me a while to warm to it but it's a fine even-handed drama. There are many landscapes and lush balls and fussy clothing, it's a visual treat, but not so much that it distracts. Dramatic scenes are few, battles and deaths occur off screen. But there are glances and silent expressions. It doesn't hold your hand, you're left to interpret the action. There's no real villain in the piece: the family is slowly undone by accidents and minor faults. If they have any real fault, it's that their way of life simply has no place in the reunified Italy. Surprisingly satisfying.

I remember Walkabout still being awesome when I watched it 10 years ago. I hope that still stands up.

Just started a rewatch of Eastbound and Down. I can't remember half of what goes on in the show so that's a good thing. I also can't believe Danny McBride was younger than me when the first season came out (he was 32. I'm just 34).

Finished the first season of The Pitt. It’s real good. It’s reminiscent of old ER with some gross medical stuff. Some characters have overdramatized reactions but overall it’s real solid and tense. Noah Wyle kills it and makes me want him as a boss.

What I remember about Lost is waiting a week for an episode rarely delivered, but watching them all in a row felt good to great. It really did usher in the early Netflix binge tv era.

Seconding The Pitt. One of the best shows of the year. The second season comes out next year, and it'll take place during another shift during the Fourth of July. The time jump will be interesting to see how the characters progressed.

I loved that show back when it was airing. For some reason I skipped Vice Principals when it was on, so I just spent a week watching it. I don't think it was nearly as funny as my memory of Eastbound and Down was, but Danny McBride and Walton Goggins' chemistry is great. I started The Righteous Gemstones back in 2019 and only finished season 1 so I'll be going through that again and continuing on through season 4 in the next little while.

yeah and also the second time you watch you are no longer anxious to know what will happen and to find what's inside the mystery boxes and can just enjoy the ride

the last season is still kinda bad though, by far the worst

I started to rewatch Daria on the weekends even without the music, the show is very good. It is very 90s/early 00s but it does nail the zeitgeist of the time while also being funny and has decent depth.

Just finished the latest series of Black Mirror. In short, it's nothing new but what you'd expect from a good season Black Mirror, with some better and worse episodes.

The first episode is arguably the best as it tells a tightly contained story about enshittification and the working poor without any major last minute twist. If I was looking for faults, they would be that most episodes go 5 to 10 minutes too long, and there's a lot of reliance on "okay now you're inside VR / a video game / someone's memory" as the main plot device. And at least one episode that uses that device but would function perfectly fine without it.

But on balance it's good and better than most things on TV. It's just not as novel as it used to be.

I really liked Season 7 a lot more than the past few seasons. Eulogy was my favorite, Paul Giamatti giving a great performance as always.

On today's episode of A Different World, the students take over the administration building with a list of demands. The dean calls the police and threatens to expel everyone while the staff reminisce about taking part in the Washington March. The students immediately disperse in exchange for breakfast and admit that their cause was stupid and they were wrong to challenge authority. The episode ends with a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. Did the FBI co-produce this?

Yeah we liked it too. I don’t know if it’s a show that needs detailed deconstructing but it somehow walked a pretty good line between (1) showing the residents of this arctic village as normal people by being a pretty basic workplace/family comedy/drama instead of noble savage subsistence people or white hero crime drama and (2) still showing off unique culture and history in cool and usually show-relevant ways. It’s definitely no Reservation Dogs but I’ll watch more if it gets picked up.

Shining Vale is a blast. There's nothing that hasn't been done before, but it mashes so many horror tropes together into a coherent story, and more importantly, every actor seems like they're having a lot of fun. The husband is my favorite character. In many ways it reminds me of Evil, but with more humor. It's directly doing some things Evil did, like the stuff with the son's VR headset.

I heard it was cancelled, does it at least have a satisfactory ending?

No, and the second season is a step down. There's still some really great stuff though, particularly the arc they give Alison Tollman's character.
