I have been binging Deadwood lately; I just finished Season 1 and the finale was very very good. I'm thinking maybe Rubicon next but the first episode didn't grab me.

Gone through the first couple seasons of Always Sunny in Philadelphia when people are over mainly... it's kind of hit or miss but usually good.

Anyone have specific recommendations? I like a lot of gritty and at least vaguely realistic stuff. Depictions of the criminal underworld, particularly organized crime, that aim for realism.

Some of my top stuff: The Wire, Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers, Huff, Rome; Firefly, Arrested Development, Suits

Stuff that was in my alley, held my interest for a while, then lost it and I quit watching: Dexter, Burn Notice, Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead

Yeah, I've seen all of the Sopranos episodes and most twice, enjoyed them but didnt consider it on the same level as The Wire or something. I used to watch Brotherhood, I think I got the first two seasons, kind of assumed it got cancelled or ended after that. I'll have to look into there being more of that. I enjoyed it a lot.

Never got into The Shield though. I just can't suppress my rage at the main character, kind of kills it for me. I just want to punch him the whole time because... he's a crooked cop (from what little I've seen). Irrational, perhaps, but it kind of ruined it for me.

I recently binged The Following after running out of stuff to watch. I was surprised how much I really liked the first, and to a lesser degree, second seasons. The third was pretty bad.

e: I also somehow managed to enjoy the first season of Falling Skies despite its flaws, but had to stop watching during the second.

So in this particular fight to the bottom, the following is WAY suckier, by a lot.

I took the central conceit of the first part of the Following with a huge grain of salt, and took the entire series as an extreme "what if". Joe has traction with his guards, manages time unsupervised with serial killer fanatics, some of whom have killed themselves... and manipulates them. He's a supervillain in a real life show. It's ridiculous, but I was able to roll with it.

You can definitely poke a lot of holes in Joe Carrol and Ryan Hardy, but there's more there. I wouldn't call it a classic, but Hardy's entire battle with morality in the first season, as well as the way Carroll dismantles it piece by piece... I felt there was something there, flawed as it was. Then they promptly lost it.

A lot of the drama in Falling Skies felt forced; Noah Wyle barely carries it by being an excellent good-guy audience insert. The characters are thin enough that it only carried me through the 'survival' plot of the first season; the second felt more episodic and canned. Also, they lost me with the talking to aliens. I was down with post-apocalypse more than Star Trek alien diplomacy.

I've also started watching Justified because of you guys, and I'm at season 1.5ish and it's really fun but I have wished AVA total death since episode one. OMG she's white trash hot. YAY. No spoilers please =D

I never thought she was hot in any way shape or form. I think, in the show's whole "western" thing, she's the last southern belle, with all the 'southern hospitality' style formality. Which makes her the leading lady. In this way, that she's dirty white trash but sticks to the "old code"; particularly while remaining willing to use violence, if she deems it necessary... she was Rayland's counterpart from the first episode.

e: winona and rachel can get it tho

It's very dry, but I liked John Adams a lot. Paul Giamatti did a good job.

Now i'm going through The Following and i'm really liking it, about 6 episodes in but the premise seems so unrealistic that it pulls me out of it a lot. I could understand if this was a movie but I just can't accept Joe Carroll basically tricking the entire FBI and every police department day in and day out.

Yeah, I reached a point where I had to treat the show as a big "what if" scenario. Carroll is a supervillain in a real life show, basically. "What if someone, through social engineering and meticulous planning, developed a terrorist network from inside prison? One which ensured noone was safe AND law enforcement was easily manipulable?".

From that point, I just looked at it as being an interesting problem for Ryan Hardy to attempt to solve. I still really enjoyed season 1 and 2.

Re-watching Hannibal, only did Season 1 episodes 1 and 2 so far. They're so good, even a third time.

Gonna do Aquarius too, but the first ep didn't really grab me

I am watching and guiltily enjoying the first parts of both of those series. While I re-watch Hannibal.

Banshee, as of the first few eps, is not-Justified. Strike Back, thusfar, is not-24.

Now, I read that post as though the voice was Hannibal Lecters.

Banshee has been pretty drat good for how soapy it is (the fight scenes!) and I am highly enjoying it. I would recommend it. Burn Notice x Justified?

My binge-rewatch of Hannibal was quite enjoyable a second time around; scrutinizing Hannibal's behavior and his very specific language was quite interesting.

True Blood is a soap opera with porn in it for 16 year old girls with Twilight fetishes. You did well to abandon it.

Any suggestions?
BBC's Rome, Broadchurch, The Fall. I imagine you've seen The Wire, True Detective, Justified, Deadwood and Carnivale.

Better Call Saul and Ray Donovan aren't quite as up there, but all of these are worth a (re)watch.

If you can handle the soap and porn of True Blood, but it's the rest of the badness that's turning you off -- try Banshee.

Also Fargo. Definitely check out Fargo.

Yeah, the first season was amazing; I thought it was the entire story, so the season 2 announcement caught me off guard. I never looked into the real-life incident, so I'm kind of wondering where they're taking it.

As an aside, for some reason I couldn't binge the first season. I binged everything else and took breaks by watching Fargo one episode at a time. It's still really, really good.

Do you think you enjoyed the show more believing it was based on real events?

Nah, mostly I feel dumb; however, I don't usually research poo poo like that, so... it's mostly a silly thing to tack on if it's a lie.

According to wikipedia, they took this from the Coen brothers doing this in the movie; their justification: "If an audience believes that something's based on a real event, it gives you permission to do things they might otherwise not accept."

I guess they say the story itself happened, just not in the same place. I'm now interested enough that if someone knows the details, I'd like to hear them.

Yeah, I don't know how I made it through season 2 of Falling Skies. I oddly enjoyed the first.

Sadly, I am without anything to binge; reliant on the network schedule to drip-feed me my entertainment ever so slowly.

Someone else had that idea, and they put Killjoys on the air. Which, I am watching despite it being mediocre at best. I think the premise could support better plots, acting, AND budgets.

The lead chick is painful to watch try to pretend to be tough; though I suppose it's just as much the writers' fault for "this is how tough people probably act, I dunno" and "tough chicks! people love them!". The dude from the following's twin is, to use a phrase I usually dislike, beta as gently caress -- annoying as poo poo and nearly useless compared to the other two. The older brother basically doesn't have a character. Tough guy with a checkered, mysterious past and painfully generic male sex object.

It's not really quite eye-searingly bad though. I haven't put my finger on why.

Thanks to this thread, I've basked in the glory that is Mr. Robot, and Banshee.
Blew through Banshee in just under 2 weeks. Awesome ride.
Started watching Mr. Robot in August as it was being released weekly up in Canada, until I realized it was on in the spring on USA network (I think?).
Anyway, blew through the last few episodes.

Thinking of starting The Wire next. Heard it's a great series.

Anything else that falls into the Banshee/Ray Donovan type show that this thread can recommend?

You may enjoy Justified and Fargo.

I recently watched the first 4 seasons of Shameless (US). Far from perfect, but I found the situation easy to relate to. The comedy was a good counterpoint to the bleakness of circumstance.
