Nobody move and nobody gets hurt.

Alright, so after giving the first episode a shot a few years ago and not being especially taken with it, I've decided to give Vikings another shot. Is there some point where it kicks into high gear that I should stick it out for, or will I know in the first few episodes whether or not my first impression was correct?

Closing in on the end of season 1 of The Leftovers. I'm sort of bored with the GR story, but that episode where Nora went to New York was excellent and then the one focusing on Tom after that was great too.

Tried getting into The Birthday Boys because I love sketch comedy and Bob Odenkirk, but I just didn't get it. It seemed like most of the humor is that they're playing everything straight but in a self-aware "get it?" sort of way. The sketches have funny premises, but it seems like they ride on a wacky premise more than actual content of a sketch.

Re: Birthday Boys, try skipping to the second season. The first one was a little rough as they seemed to just be putting a lot of their stage material on film, but the second is legitimately great sketch comedy.

Well I just finished Season 3 of Vikings, and it's great. Now I learn that Season 4 isn't free on Prime yet. How long does it usually take for a season of TV to become free with Prime?

Finished the most recent season of Vikings, and while it's certainly enjoyable, the cracks are kind of beginning to show. Characters that should have been gone a long time ago stick around living the same character arcs over and over, while the occasional huge time jump causes some interesting plot threads to fizzle.

I'm still interested enough to watch the next season as it airs, and I certainly binged it fast enough, but yeah, there's been a definite decline in quality.

They are making another season

Even so, based on the ending I doubt Hugh Laurie is going to play much of a part.

How is the Once Upon A Time spin-off? I note that it doesn't seem to have had a home release (other than iTunes and Amazon Prime video) in the three years since it was on.

If you like the original then it's perfectly enjoyable. Spends all of its time in Wonderland so the cheesy-bad greenscreen is more or less constant, but it tells its whole story and is completely self-contained, and the performances are good. It's a worthwhile companion piece to the main show.

Been feeling down recently, so stayed in and watched a lot of Netflix. 9 seasons worth in the last month. Let's see...

Watched seasons 1-3 of Vikings. This show is incredibly beautifully made, amazing cinematography and sense of place. I really like it but... ahhh, there's something just a little bit off about it. Almost like I don't actually care for the most of the main characters even though I'm really enjoying the show. They just feel a bit distant from me, little connection, despite how well produced the whole thing is. When it came to the siege of Paris I found myself actually cheering on the Franks rather than the Vikings and considering the viewpoint is from that of the Vikings I think that's a failure of storytelling perhaps. Oh, and Jarl Borg did nothing wrong.

This is kind of exactly how I feel about Vikings. It's a good show and I was definitely interested enough to binge all four seasons over a couple of weeks, but things felt simultaneously too static and too fluid for me to really get a grip on most of the characters. The frequent time jumps, though I get why many of them exist, made it hard to track certain relationships and made others feel a bit absurd.

And Bloodline was really good but I have had a hard time trying to get back into it to see the new season. I wish I could remember what show the main brother guy used to be in, that I loved.

Well I was looking for a new show to watch and I decided to finally check out Bojack Horseman. Just watched 9 episodes in one sitting, and I'd keep going if I didn't have work in the morning. It's good!

Update: I'm into Season 5 of Bojack Horseman now. It's a very good show, and an extremely easy binge. I don't know that I find it revolutionary or anything, but I feel like it would've made my Top 10 list most years if I'd watched it in real time.

how many tv shows do you watch that making the top 10 of any given year is even an accolade?

Enough that whenever I post my list in the end-of-year threads I usually have to cut down from 25 or 30 legitimate contenders, plus whatever other nonsense I watch that falls outside of that status.

I avoided Chernobyl because I have a hard time with body horror stuff, and many of the reactions I was seeing indicated that was a considerable part of it. Is that accurate?

Alright, I finished Bojack Horseman. Generally speaking, I liked it! As a comedy it was a slam dunk, just hilarious. Whether going for clever wordplay or facepalm-worthy animal puns, it all just worked, and it was the humor more than anything that made it so easy to binge all 7 seasons over the course of just under two weeks.

As a drama, I thought it was good, but not great. There were moments that they really nailed, and some interesting explorations of depression and addiction, but if the show hadn't been so funny I probably would've dropped it a season or two in for being a bit too "misery porn." Maybe that element of the show just can't fully breathe in such a compact viewing period, I don't know, but a lot of the dramatic plot points rang hollow to me after a while. And some of the characters who make sense and shine as part of a comedy ensemble just don't hold up when the show asks me to take them seriously as wounded emotional beings.

Still, very glad that I finally watched it. Now I think I'm going to take the general advice of this forum and check out Ted Lasso.

Is it the general thread opinion that The Magicians is good? My little sister is pushing me to watch it and I wanna know whether I should really watch it or just put it on in the background while I'm working so I can pretend.

It's really good. The first season can be kind of rough, but the show tends to get better and better as it goes along, and by the end it was one of my favorites.

It's not as good but Deutschland 83 is a fun sister show to The Americans. Some similar themes and they cover roughly the same events like South Africa, Cuba, rear end in a top hat Reagan etc.

I think I watched an Americans season finale that ended with the characters watching a Reagan speech, and then literally the next thing I watched was the premiere of Deutschland 83 which began with characters watching the exact same Reagan speech. It was like stepping into an alternate universe.

Still need to watch Deutschland 89, it's on my list but I've fallen way behind on TV lately.

I like the show, but it's not really the kind of show I can binge three straight seasons of. It's a little...dry for that, I guess? I'll try to prioritize one season and see if the momentum carries me through.
