I have been marathoning through a lot lately, sometimes for 10-14 hours non-stop.

I am picking up cheap box sets whenever I can and I have quite a few sitting in my shelf unopened (coming up: Six feet under, The Shield, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Mad Men).
So far, I have not been disappointed once, knock on wood.

I watched these over the last week.

Entourage looked like it wouldn't click with me, but it got me hooked after about 4 or 5 episodes. Although it really gets quite repetitive and sort of formulaic if watched in that condensed form. You really start noticing a lot of recurring themes, phrases and plot elements.
Still highly enjoyable though.

Californication is what I like to call "Sex and the city" for guys.
Duchovny is fantastic in this one. Not much to binge through with just a single season out yet, but I went through that in one sitting nevertheless. God bless Showtime and HBO.

How I met your mother
Meh. Just finished the first season. While I generally like it and will be watching the rest as well, I am not completely overwhelmed.
It's a tad generic and appears to be a hybrid of "Friends" and "Scrubs" (general theme of the first, some of the quirkiness of the latter). Maybe it's just that classic laughtrack/live audience sitcoms seem a little bit outdated these days, after watching and immensely enjoying a lot of shows like The Office, My Name is Earl, Curb your Enthusiasm etc.

Just finished Firefly, will watch Serenity (the movie) later this evening.

Holy poo poo, network execs are idiots.

Sure, the ratings probably were bad when it originally aired (were they?), but what exactly did they expect when they ran the episodes out of order and showed the PILOT at the END of the season? What the gently caress?

The "What really happened" special on the DVDs is gutwrenching.
You can tell how devastated the cast and crew were by how lovely the whole affair was handled.

I knew that Firefly was prematurely cancelled and this is what kept me from catching up on the series in the first place, but I got a sweet deal on the season box set and the movie and thought I should give it a shot. Now I am depressed for another excellent show ruined by a network. Don't DVD sales factor in when those dickheads make decisions these days?

Ah well, at least Farscape had it's run with four seasons.
Hopefully Serenity will bring some closure. The season/series finale sure as hell did not.
Was Firefly cancelled mid-season or was "Objects in Space" the intended season finale?

Coming up next:
Pushing Daisies or The Shield, depending on my mood after watching Serenity.

Edit:
Serenity was mighty impressive for a tacked on feature film for a tv series that has been nipped in the bud by the network. I really feel sorry for the cast and crew.

Is there a way to check how well the series and the movie sold on DVD?

"Pushing Daisies" field report:

I am now two-thirds through the first season (which by the way looks awesome on BluRay!), and while I am enjoying it so far, I can't really "binge" through this one like I did with lots of other shows. I could easily sit through 5-6 episodes of, say, "Veronica Mars", "Firefly" or "How I met your mother" ("oh, it's 5:00 am already?"), but for some reason I hardly can watch more than 2 episodes of "Pushing Daisies" in one sitting. I really like the show, the characters, the design and the quirky storylines, but only in small doses.
Can't put my finger on why that is, though.

Started with Mad Men yesterday. Bought it on a whim and based on it's internet merits when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago. I'm now 4 episodes in and so far, I am a tad disappointed. From the description I expected it to focus more on the work in the agency instead of the boring family drama surrounding some if not all of the characters.

At this point, I find it hard to like any of the characters (except Christina Hendricks' :swoon:), and while this may be intentional, I hope that changes soon. Currently I don't give a gently caress about Draper and whom he is screwing with or if Campbell will eventually lose his job or be miserable with his wife. I'd prefer more advertising magic and office intrigue.

I'm not quite getting the hype, but I'll stick with it to see where it goes.

On the plus side, the BluRay looks fantastic and both the costumes and the set design do a good job of conveying the spirit of that era.

Oh, and I love the opening credits.

I think nobody really had a problem with the suitcase nuke going off or thought that was too "over the top". It was gutsy and loving awesome for the story.

Season 6 just peaked to early with the nuke and went on a slow but steady decline until the Fayed showdown. Then it came up with "Ooooodrey" and the Chinese and jumped off a loving cliff, at what, hour 16? Can't remember.

I still can't bring myself to rewatch season 6 and I doubt I ever will.

Echoing the sentiments for Damages - I started yesterday night and had to stop after 7 episodes in at 5:30 a.m. Did not read the spoiler two posts up, though.

The end of each episode caught me off guard, I could hardly believe that another 45 minutes had just passed. The writing so far is incredibly tight with little to no fluff.

I just finished Dead like me the other night.
I finally caved, although I never ever wanted to start watching a show that had been prematurely cancelled or did not receive a renewal.

Since there were no loose ends and no unfinished story arcs (there only have been two mini arcs, Rube's daughter and Ray, which both were resolved), the ending of the series was handled well, I guess. I would have loved to see more, because the ensemble cast really played well off another. I liked the change Daisy went through, from ditzy, obnoxious starlet to a more mature and darker character. Too bad she isn't in the movie.

Although I read that the movie wasn't well received, I will try to get hold of it, hoping that it will provide some real closure to the story.

And Ellen Muth is amazingly cute - in a very weird way though...

I finished the series the other day too and there were still some mysteries I would've liked solved. For one, they never show Rube's "origin", though it's safe to assume he was some kind of criminal and got shot or something that night he left his daughter (WANTED poster in a previous episode).

Yeah, that is pretty much all the explanation I personally needed.
I liked that it was left somewhat in the dark and you needed to make your own conclusion.

The Duke posted:

It struck me as odd they bothered to show you every other reaper's death pretty explicitly but Rube's is left to speculation.

I recently started watching Chuck and while it is certainly watchable, I'm not really hooked. For me, the action sequences are too cartoonish and the mix of goofy comedy and spy/sci-fi stuff did not hit a nerve yet. I am 10 episodes in and will keep watching for the time being (box set was 11 bucks, so what the heck), but I just can't share most TVIV goons opinon that it currently is one of the best shows on TV.

It takes some time to get into it, but it really picks up about half or two-thirds into the first season and the subsequent seasons get better and better.

Most characters become downright loveable (some of which you will love to hate) and the chemistry and dynamic between them is amazing.

Trust me on this. I don't think it's hyperbole when I say that everyone who watched the show in it's entirety ended up loving it and ranks it as one of the best sci-fi shows ever.

God drat, that was some great tv. I am amazed by how the writers managed to create tons of flawed characters and making me like each and everyone of them, without exception. Cheaters, homophobes, whiny wives... there is not a single one I don't care for some way or the other.

And jesus christ, Milena Govich (Candy/Danielle, Shea's escort/girl friend) is easily the hottest and cutest human being on the planet (hot and cute at the same time, those are the worst!).

Edit: Ok, Sheila's lover is the only one I don't like...

Aaand I am done with season 2. That was gutwrenching.

I finished Heroes this past weekend and then started Six Feet Under - talk about a huge change of pace. Oh well. Six Feet Under is pretty good so far, I'm about half-way through the first season.

Can't bring myself to start watching Six feet under right now, I don't think I could handle a massive onslaught of :emo: right now. On a scale from 1 to 10, how depressing is the show? I am guessing 12.

So it's back to comedy for me.
Currently rewatching Extras again (Ricky Gervais).
The episodes with Kate Winslet and Patrick Stewart are magnificient.

Especially Winslet is hilarious. I guess because she has never done comedy, at least not as far as I remember.
"Eternal Sunshine..." comes as close to "comedy" as it gets.

Andy Millman: "I think, you know, you doing this is so commendable - you know, using your profile to keep the message alive about the Holocaust."

Kate Winslet: "My God, I'm not doing it for that. And I don't think we really need another film about the Holocaust, do we? It's like, how many have there been? You know, we get it - it was grim, move on. No, I'm doing it because I've noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust - guaranteed Oscar!"

Fun fact: When Extras was shot (2005), Winslet had been nominated for an Oscar once again (for "Eternal Sunshine..."). Merchant and Gervais were crossing their fingers for her NOT to win that year, because it would have killed the Winslet episode...

The outtakes from those two episodes are solid gold, too.

I had no idea that Patrick Stewart was a last minute addition to the series, since it appears Jude Law had jumped ship due to scheduling issues and Gervais and Merchant could not get in touch with Leonardo di Caprio ("Searching for Leo" is also in the DVDs extras...).
Thank god for Captain Picard.... "make it so!".

Started on "Weeds" on Thursday evening and just finished the first disc of season 3.

The show somehow flew below my radar because from the synopsis I read a while back and clips I occasionally caught I expected it to be some sort of stoner comedy, which never did anything for me (not judging, just saying). Boy, was I wrong about that. Highly enjoyable, funny with a hint of drama and with a great cast of characters. Some turns and twists are a tad deus ex machina at times, but I've seen worse.

I just realized that Sanjay is Jonathan from 30 Rock (Jack Donaghy's assistant).
I have no idea how I missed that, it's so obvious but it did not click.

And Mary-Louise Parker must have some sort of Dorian Gray picture down in her basement, it is unbelievable how stunning she looks at 45.

Edit: And while the opening titles kind of got on my nerves in season 1, I liked the take in the second season, using different styles and interpretations of the song. Can't get it out of my head right now... "Little boxes, on the hillside..."... it's haunting me.

Started on Seinfeld a couple of days ago.
I caught the odd episode when it aired, but I never followed it consistently.

You can feel that it took some time before it hit it's stride, but from early on of the second season, it's pretty, pretty, pretty good and I find that it has aged extremely well so far.

The DVD extras are also good with plenty of commentaries (some separate from the episodes)and a special about how the series got started and developed ("How it happened").

The only thing is, I never particularly liked Jerry himself, neither his character nor his comedy bits, but the rest of the main cast easily makes up for it.

I am also looking forward to tons of guest stars who had their big break since being on the show.

I finished the Seinfeld box set a couple of days ago. Took me about 5 or 6 weeks. Including all episodes and hours of bonus material, that's quite a feat, I guess.

As I mentioned earlier, I never saw the series in it's entirety, I just caught the odd episode here and there on TV (in a dubbed version), so I never fully understood the whole "best sitcom of all time" hyperbole that surrounds the show.
I do now.

Again, I think the show has aged extremely well, considering that the first episodes are now almost 20 years old. Aside from some of the goofy outfits, this could very well be a show that was produced just a couple of years back. The ensemble cast is fantastic. Jerry Seinfeld is the only weak link, because he is kind of a bad actor and his constant smirking during most of his delivery can be grating. But then, this makes for plenty of outtakes, which are also included.

Jason Alexander (as an alter ego of co-writer and co-creator Larry David) is the secret star of the show though, which easily could have been called "Costanza" instead of "Seinfeld". Michael Richards' quirkiness never gets old and his physical comedy is wonderfully exaggerated. Finally, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is perfect as the female foil to the three guys.

And the guest stars... oh, the guest stars. It's so much fun to spot the appearance of actors and actresses before their big breaks (Teri Hatcher, Bryan Cranston, Peter Krause, just to name a few).

I thought the show took a very small but noticeable dive in quality after Larry David left the team at the beginning of season 8, but that is really just a dip in an otherwise stellar run.
Off the top of my head I can't think of a single bad episode. Sure, there are some outstanding favourites, but come to think of it, I did not once find myself thinking an episode sucked completely. It's just that consistently good.

By the way, the box set is fantastic. The menus vary from disc to disc and allude to elements of certain episodes, navigation is very consistent and there are tons of extras, like audio commentaries, "notes about nothing", which are basically subtitles with production notes or trivial information explaining minor details of the scenes on screen. There are also plenty of interviews with cast members, writers and studio executives on how the show was pitched and developed into one of the most successful shows on TV.

If for some reason you never caught the whole show, I highly recommend it.

Finally got to tackle season 5 of Rescue me after I found the second part on DVD for a reasonable price (gently caress this "let's split a season into two DVD volumes" bullshit).
I had volume 1 gathering dust for almost 6 months because I snatched it on sale back then but didn't want to start watching it without vol.2 readily available.

It's still a great show that manages to hit the right note between comedy and drama and even though certain plot elements are recycled time and again (the Tommy/Sheila/Janet merry-go-round, the AA stuff...) it's still fun to watch.

And almost everytime I want to call it quits for the evening there's a cliffhanger that makes me go for just another episode.

Just finished season 1 of "The West Wing".
The box has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time, because I never really felt like committing to it for an extended period of time and I also was not quite sure what to expect - I was afraid it would be somewhat dry and not as interesting as the many alternatives that were floating around. Boy, was I wrong.

I got to say, it's a real nice change in pace after all the show I watched recently, which were either

a) comedies
(mainly NBC's thursday lineup, HIMYM, IASIP)

b) action driven dramas
(24, The Shield)

c) formulaic dramas/crime shows
(House, Castle, Bones)

d) mystery shows
(Lost, Fringe)

and not boring at all.
The characters are fantastic, as is the writing and the deliberately written dialogues.

I know the show originally started airing 1999/2000, but it has a very distinct "classic 90's" feel to it, from the opening credits to the overall atmosphere.

It will be interesting to see how it evolves and deals with the events in the first half of the last decade.

Yeah I know, "look forward to 'Two cathedrals'", "it will start to go downhill after season 4"... for the time being, I am enjoying a extremely well written and cast show and I have six more seasons to tide me over until the new fall season starts.

Is it safe to assume that I can skip the first ~25 seasons of oldschool stuff and get the "modern" series 1-4 without missing any important background information (if there is any?)

Oh, and Seinfeld. A timeless classic and unrivaled.

Science-Fiction-y: Fringe - also needs some time to grow on you, but once the overarching story sets in and develops, you will most likely enjoy it. There are a couple of "monster of the week" episodes in between that are hit and miss, but overall, the payoff is worth it. One of the main characters, Walter, is awesome right off the bat, so that will keep you watching anyway.

Drama - The West Wing. With 7 seasons at around 22 episodes each, this will be your Everest.

God, Sherlock's such a dick. But Watson/Freeman (he looks so old...) is very likeable, so it evens out.

For some reason I never got around to finishing The Shield.

After I binged through seasons 1-6 well over a year back I had to order season 7 first and I somehow shelved it when it arrived and then I kind of forgot about it.

Yesterday evening at around 10pm I decided to finally pop in the first DVD since people started posting stuff from season 7 and the conclusion of the series in the SoA thread (another Sutter show) and I did not want to run into a spoiler by accident and have the finale ruined...

I went to sleep sometime after 7am this morning.
Worth it.

I recently came across "The increasingly bad decisions of Todd Margaret" with David Cross and Will Arnett and finished it just in time for it's second season return today (what are the chances?).

I found it to be like "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" meets "Curb your enthusiasm", only louder and a little less subtle, yet pretty funny. The way events pan out at the end and everything falls into place for the worst outcome possible is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion. Cross revisits some of the naivity of Tobias Fünke and it's hilarious.

I was wondering how "Alice's drapes 4 kitchen" would come back biting Todd in the rear end the second he wrote it on the cardboard box and I did not see that coming...

How far into it did you get?
It takes some time to find it's footing, even die-hard fans don't have a problem admitting that.

There are some real stinkers in the first half of the first season (but also some pretty good episodes). Once the character dynamics start to settle in (shortly after season 1, episode 15) it gets better and better.

If you made it through season one and did not enjoy it, well, then maybe it really just is not for you.

Time to dust off my box sets

I started to watch Alphas, but I'm having a hard time enjoying it, mainly because I find it hard to sympathize with any of the eponymous main characters. They are just so unlikeable, I don't know if it's intentional or if they just rub me the wrong way.
There also seems to be no natural chemistry between them.
