I played a few 9x9s with a friend and had a blast talking out positions, but we are on vacation right now so time isn't a factor. I play at our local club every week. Usually 1 or 2 games plus an hour or two of review and looking at joseki, opening positions with other players. Daily tsumego takes ~15 minutes. I try to play 2-3 serious games a week online. Some kind of study, whether Youtube lectures, studying fuseki or reading is maybe 2 hours a week. So that's probably ~9 hours a week. But I'm in a try hard period trying to get to 1 dan. Whatever you like doing spending time on is probably the best way to make sure you find time to play/ study. No one is above studying tsumego, but whatever keeps you energized for more, whether blitz, a serious game, Youtube or reading, enjoying the time spent is the most important thing I'd be more than happy to help you review games too!

Excellent comments and perspective from.both of you, thanks. I think I'm gonna try to do some 9x9 blitz even if it's not "true" go

I feel the same, I play go about 5 hours a year so I'll always suck but I've given up on my dreams of going pro. I just read books and sometimes I play with my kids, and maybe someday I'll make a Go friend and actually improve.

Longtime friend started playing a lot and so I've been getting back into this, I played a bunch like 12 years ago and got up to 5-6k, then basically 1-2 games a year. Having a lot of fun and seem to be around 9-10k now. guess the ranking drop is not as bad as it could be - my early game decisionmaking has taken a hit, but my reading isn't too bad. Hopefully I can get through some big mistakes and slither my way back to where I was before by just sticking with it.

ITGO isn't a very active server on KGS just FYI. You can find some of us on Discord and I'm happy to play. OGS is the more popular server these days I believe.

YMI is the only online merchant I'm aware of otherwise. Especially not now. I think you used to be able to do something like get a board and glass stones from Kiseido and grab some cheap bowls elsewhere, but they only have slate and shell now. Doing direct import from Japan or Korea could work, but you'll probably pay some insane amount in shipping. For reference, I tried adding a set on Kurokigoishiten that was about $160 after conversion rate, and the shipping was $149. kirtar fucked around with this message at 07:19 on Jun 19, 2024 |

Yeah I mean I got my shogi set from some small Asian import store in Berkeley CA so you might go looking for something like that

Anyone going to Congress in a few weeks? I’m in Oregon and will be there the whole week. Would love to do a goon meet over a game or beer! In other news the NAGF professional qualification is happening now (side note does anyone know why Mexico isn’t a part of the federation?). The 10 year old just got knocked out and the second and possibly last match will be happening tomorrow morning (roughly 7 hours from now): https://www.twitch.tv/BadukClub Exciting matches and the commentators are doing a great job.

Huh, didn't hear about it til now. I live across the river from Portland, I might be able to sojourn over some day. e. The aga go congress has an impressively bad website.

AFAIK the AGA IT staff are all unpaid volunteers so take it easy on them .Mexico historically aligned with the Ibero American Go Association, I think because of language/cultural closeness, and chose not to migrate over to the NAGF.

(sent here from the boardgame thread in trad games) Is there a guide somewhere on how to become good at playing Go? I've been checking out https://store.steampowered.com/app/1264970/The_Conquest_of_Go/ and it's neat, but oh man I suck at Go

been playing some 9x9 on goquest recently, after not playing go for 4 or 5 years. im wondering if there are any resources for improving at 9x9? like, videos or books in english. back when i played all the time it seemed impossible to find these kinds of things, but maybe there's been some changes in the go world since the chess boom? are people more into board games in general? though with only 30 new posts in the past year here im guessing not.

Best English-language resource I've found for 9x9 is "81 Little Lions" posted on OGS's forum back in the day.

Stephen Hu made a neat YouTube series on 9x9 "opening theory": https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLK12cRMakgalAlPnD93ptdOA5r1xSSk_U&si=MDZziepresswGrxA There are more basic videos on 9x9 from Jonathan Hop and Michael Redmond, and for the more advanced, a couple of pros dabbling in 9x9 (e.g. see Go Pro Yeonwoo's channel).

Just lost a game BUT looking at the replay I was the one to eventually make a move that the AI wanted us both to play 20 turns earlier, so I'll take that as a moral victory

Every game of Go is a victory - you either defeated an opponent or discovered a lesson to be learned.

But then Frozensoul told me it was bad and not to play like that lol. He's right in that I can't follow up on things as well as the ai and should have a clearer understanding of what I'm doing.

I’ve been in Go rut lately especially after attending the US Go Congress in July. Haven’t studied, done Tsumego, or played online at all. Right now my weekly club meetings are all I do. I’m an AGA 15kyu and usually lose with 4-6 stone handicaps against the mid to low kyu players at the club. But this week I won against a 9kyu in an even game. I think I’m closer to his strength, now I just hope to regain the drive to improve.

I had a similar experience where I won a 9kyu in person by 0.5 back in the day. That's when I realized I was SDK, or just about. At the time, both of us were elated to have a 0.5 game for the first time. I still have an old grainy cell photo of the final position. Not sure if this is helpful exactly, but all my biggest jumps of strength happened after a fairly long pause in playing. I never completely stopped thinking about Go and watched streamers and some pro games. When I got back into it, I could feel a shift in my brain that was unexpected and I viewed the board differently.

Months ago he decided he was only going to win by 0.5 and he did. It was a really exciting game, he played far differently than he would have normally. The other club members have complemented my play lately. Even if I don’t notice the improvement, it’s nice to hear others see it. I’m sure when I sign up for another tournament I’ll get the itch to study again. For now I’m enjoying just playing once a week.

I have similar troubles. I've pushed to about 11k before and just dropped the game. I'm in another cycle of interest, but perenially all the in person clubs are a minimum hour drive away and it's hard to maintain interest without that community. Online is cool, but it can't beat in person. I've thought about making my own club locally, but I'm not sure if that would be successful or if I have the time.
