Wondering if I can get some advice...

I needed to take apart my desk for reasons and now I'm thinking about how best to put it together.

Everything is in chaos but I put back a minimally viable desk so I could get some work done this week.

I've got an Ikea Gerton tabletop with two Gerton legs on one side, and some clips on the other side to hold it to my Expedit shelf. Note those are Great Britain ikea links but I'm in the US, it looks like that's discontinued in the US so no links to the Ikea US site.

The Gerton fits in those desk clips but it was never a "supported" combination. And I've got 3 monitors mounted to the desk (arms visible in the picture), and I didn't want all that weight being held up by the bookcase. So I got a third Gerton leg (currently laying on the floor there) to put on the other end to take some of the weight off. And I never ended up actually screwing it into the desk, just sort of hammering it in there so it stayed upright. I had to move the bookcase so electricians could get to something behind, and that meant I had to move the desk. And to move the desk I had to detach it from the bookcase. And that meant I had to take the monitors off, so it was quite the operation. And now that it's all done I'm wondering about better ways to put it back together.

I like the tabletop, but I don't want it to be attached to the bookcase anymore. I don't really like just having 4 freestanding legs, one at each corner, and would prefer some kind of frame with L-shaped legs, especially something where the structure is towards the back of the desk, since I've got my monitor arms hooked onto the back of the desk. Something like this, that I just cribbed off of Alibaba, would be the perfect shape really:

I'm primarily WFH now (might go into the office once every two weeks). Back in the office, I had an electric adjustable standing desk, that I probably should have used more, but I ended up just keeping at a single height all the time. So I'm not opposed to getting an adjustable desk, especially because most of the options for good solid desk frames seem to be adjustable anyway. I was looking at Monoprice because I'm a cheap bastard, and because their frames are an adjustable width. But I'm not opposed to getting a nicer adjustable desk frame. Or if someone is aware of a good solid fixed height desk frame, I'm not opposed to that either.

Looks like this is a brand new product on Monoprice, I'm considering it instead of a Home Depot desk I posted a bit ago. 47" width :-/

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=42763

This photo makes it look too small though, I don't think it's enough for 2 monitors and a mouse/KB:

That's a weirdly photoshopped picture, the full specs say the desk is 23.6" (60 cm) deep, and I've done 2 monitors with keyboard on a desk that shallow before.

It's funny that the desk + frame is the exact same price as what looks to be an identical frame-only offering, both at $279.99. I guess the frame-only offering is an expandable width to be able to use all sorts of desk tops, whereas that will probably just work with that top (or one of a similar size).

25", but I have it 3" from the wall for ease of installing the arms and running cables. I can't touch the back wall without leaning forward if I put my stomach against the front edge of the desk, so I'd think that 30" would be overkill. I do Lego builds (duh) and other hobby poo poo on here, and I just put the monitors all the way back, roll up the mouspads and move the keyboards, and it's plenty of space. YMMV.

Yep. He was a lot less of a pain in my rear end back then, lol.

My own desks are four-footers, but I feel compelled to beg you to do some decent power management there. Get a real surge protector, and don't daisychain power strips. Seeing that made my eye twitch.

Yes, that was the "hastily put something together after the electricians leave so I can get some work done" setup, part of this will entail some better power/cable management. I think after nearly a year and a half I'm finally ready to stop thinking of this setup as "temporary" and buy the right components for it to make it decent.

PS, I ordered this Monoprice frame since it was on sale

So I need two L-shaped desks for my retro area. Mostly to have some work area for projects and to have a better place for my vintage computers. Earlier in the year I built some butcher block desks for my primary gaming/WFH area and enjoyed it, but I really don't have the time (or space) to finish a bunch of blocks at the moment. I'd like to buy something prefab that is affordable and sturdy. Doesn't have to be fancy. I also need two of them, since two corners of the room need to be filled. Specs:

60x60 inches for a preferred size
L-shaped
Two-piece tops (not three-piece)
$250-ish per desk.

Amazon is full of random stuff that I'm not sure how much I can trust. Staples/office stores seem to have slim pickings. Any suggestions will be welcome.

if Ikea still sold the Galant desk system, the problem would be solved, since they were modular. As far as I can tell, they don't sell any kind of modular tables or desks like how the Galant used to be, which is a shame.

Home Depot also has reasonably priced butcher blocks, mine is sitting in my basement awaiting staining and polyurethaning currently! Was like $180 for a 75" one, iirc.

I've got two desks back-to-back in my garage.

All of my streaming, homebrewing, and real work (work MBP is put away when I'm not working) happens here. It's a Gladiator workbench.

My burgeoning electronics repair gig happens here. The Apple stuff was all free from work and was all new when this thread started. One Mac Pro is staying for Apple Configurator. The other lacks RAM, processors, and disks so it's getting sold at some point. The xserve is as loud as you'd expect from a 1u server and is power hungry so it's on the way out too. All the stuff is on an old Autonomous.ai standing desk.

It’s nice. My solution is using an AHK script with Ctrl+Alt+Up/Down for volume up and down in Windows.

If you're even vaguely interested in electronics it's also not hard to build DIY input devices from raw parts. Most of the USB-native Arduino-class microcontrollers either include libraries for acting as a USB HID input device or have an available port of the QMK firmware used on a lot of specialty mechanical keyboards.

Get one with the headers preinstalled and you could get away without even having to solder anything. Load up an Arduino Pro Micro with QMK, hook up five wires to a rotary encoder of your choice, and then configure QMK for whatever you want it to do.

Trip report, I bought a 60x30 VariDesk (reclaimed wood style)and I am very impressed at the mechanical quality of everything, and the laminate top. It's real solid. Uplift was my 2nd choice but it was ~$200 more expensive, and I didn't feel it was $200 better, though I haven't seen one in real life. Mine was $700 + tax.

Just finished overhauling my desk with a new computer build, monitor, and docking station for my work laptop since I've been working from my kitchen table for a year and a half. During the workday, I use the wide monitor for work and the TV for my personal computer, mostly for music or streaming. Pretty happy with it so far, but I feel like I need a plant or something.

I’m getting a new desk soon and want to get my monitors off the desk. I have an L shape and each “leg” has a single monitor, anything I should be looking at besides Ergotron?

It’s a sit-stand so I think being able to make adjustments up-down and left-right once I get it centered is all I want.

Samsung Odyssey G9. It's my first time even using an ultrawide. I was a little skeptical at first. But after using it for five minutes, I couldn't go back. I got a pretty good deal getting a refurbished one, too. So far, it's been both good for work and playing Doom: Eternal.

Thanks!

And honestly, the TV does have nothing but Spotify up there 80 percent of the time. My living room TV on the other side of the wall duplicates whatever is on the TV in my office. So I do use it to watch stuff while I'm cooking or doing chores. I originally was planning on being able to play PC games in my living room, but there's too much input lag.

I’m thinking of going the home depot route and getting a butcher block. What do I realistically need to do to it to get it going? Sand? Stain? Seal? Or are they pretty much ok out of the box these days.
