Plywood and horse stall mats would be absolutely perfect for a high pile carpet, and they'll literally outlast your children. It's what I have used to lift on for the past 6 years and there's zero wear. They do need to air out for a day or two though, new ones are very industrial smelling when they first come out of the package.
