If I'm doing that thing where I make a desk from two file cabinets and a random slab will a piece of that triple plywood from home depot be sturdy enough? My monitor weighs like 50 pounds and if this thing starts drooping from the weight I'll kill myself

The whole thing will be 3' x 4', not that big. The stuff I was planning on getting was the 3/4" stuff, they come in 4' x 8' sections so I could double that up to an inch and a half. I guess I could also put my monitor on the part that's directly on top of the cabinet too so it's not trying as hard as it can to split it in half.

I ended up getting a 4' x 8' piece of 3/4" hard oak plywood and trimming it down to two 30" x 48" pieces, not sure whether I want to sand and paint both to make it twice as thick or make two separate ones or what. This stuff seems at least as sturdy as the cheap whatever-core stuff my other desk is made from and the dude there claimed it was thick enough to stand on. I've also still got two 1.5' x 4' scraps I can do something with if I'm ever feeling motivated enough. Thank god they cut it there or else I never would have been able to get it home with my tiny rear end car.

Or search sag calculator. Useful when making shelving.

Thanks, I'm at 1/10 of the maximum reasonable sag, so I should be good. With the width of the filing cabinet and the other piece of furniture I used as legs (an end table style TV stand) there's only actually a foot and a half of floating space, so it should all be good, I'll be finally assembling it all tonight.

That thing is only about 15 years old.

Yep, made in 2000. I don't remember how much it was at the time, but it must've been a ton because it runs 1600x1200 @ 60 hz or 1024x768 @ 100 hz (what I have it currently set to, counter strike playa :D) and the included JBL speakers are pretty good. Also, it didn't take me a month to build, I had to put it on pause after getting the wood because I had a costume to finish for an anime convention earlier this month.

How come? You get the option between high res and high refresh, it's pretty big (19" screen, 18.5" viewable). I don't really see the downsides.

Oh, it's just connected to a regular 'ol PC. I've got windows and mountain lion to use with my 'free' adobe CS6.

Hey guys! My living situation is a bit weird right now, but it's actually kind of cozy and relaxing so I thought I'd share.

-_- it's a good thing my flash can illuminate the whole room, it doesn't really get much light in here.

And I get a pretty nice view from this window right here! I'm next to an old brewery or something.

There's not a lot of space, but it'll be changing soon enough.

After living here for a year now I think I've finally settled on a setup, more or less. I think I'm gonna get some floating shelves for all the nerd poo poo on top of my tower, and I'm looking into getting a 2.1 speaker setup, but for the most part this is kinda ideal for me. The only big drawback is that my old Ikea desk was thicker, and I had a monitor mount clamped to it. I was reading that some people just throw a block of wood into the clamp to make it work, is this a dumb idea? I feel like that would lack some required support.

If you get a good arm and not a piece of poo poo you won't need extra width. My crappy monoprice arm requires extra wood blocks to be at all stable but my nice rebranded ergotron was totally stable on my 3/4 inch plywood desk.

Also using one of those cheapass Lack end tables for the PC is the best way to do it, it's such a pleasing height to have it at for some reason

also when I tried clamping the monoprice mount onto my particleboard ikea desktop the force was all directed in one spot and tried to punch a hole through it so I had to stick a hard clear piece of plastic undre the top part, also droops forward a lot because my monitor is so heavy. Just don't loving buy the monoprice arm it sucks

That's what I have now :(

It worked just fine on my old desk, but I wouldn't mind a better arm. How do I find a rebranded Ergotron?

I mean it might be fine if you have a very light monitor and a very thick, solid desk but I don't have either of those so it causes issues. I got my LX knockoff bundled with my tablet monitor for really cheap but this amazon branded thing looks exactly the same as it and the regular ergotrons do and seems to be well reviewed. Having the bigger base part that clamps onto the desk felt like it made the biggest difference for stability

I switched from the cheap monoprice arm to the amazon basics $100 ergotron for my 27" iMac monitor (after the monoprice nearly dumped my monitor on the floor and hosed up my desk) and it's way better, the best part is that the much better/larger clamp works better on the flimsier ikea desks because it spreads the weight out and doesn't punch a loving hole in it.

I just have the cheap linmon tabletop on the cheap adils legs from Ikea and even though it's not that solid it doesn't shake enough to bother me during frantic titanfall murdering or drawing on my other tablet monitor that is mounted to the same desk.

What's the currently best accepted wide desk setup? Is it still an IKEA Hammarp or a Gladiator butcher block top and legs to suit needs?

In the absence of a better suggestion my idea was a Hammarp countertop, filing cabinet as one side legs, and regular legs on the other side.

Or the Karlby? It's cheaper, but not solid wood? Will the MDF Support a monitor arm?

Currently I have a pair of linnmon tables, but I can't really drill into them for cable management as far as I know?

There's a YouTube video about how to drill through a linmon without destroying it, by an annoying guy named swashin I'd link it but I am on a phone booth rn

This isn't quite what I wanted though, I was trying to mount a Signum wire rack underneath, and I don't think Linnmon will hold the weight.

the ikea by me wasnt gonna have signums for like two months so i just screwed a towel bar i had laying around to the bottom of my linmon and velcrod everything. I think it would be fine with the weight unless your cables are 20 pounds?? As long as you use big enough screws

'Have the window to your side' so it doesn't glare on your monitor and you're not staring directly into the sun, then you won't need blackout curtains and nullify the point of having a window

My posture has improved greatly between the chair and alternating between sitting and standing multiple times through the day, but I'm still extremely sedentary and have never been particularly motivated to stick with an exercise regimen. Anyone have any experience with a treadmill desk setup?

Treadmill desks make me very nervous cause I’ve heard bad things about the strain it puts on your shoulders/arms doing extra work stabilizing themselves enough to type or click on stuff accurately while walking. Probably great if you spend more time reading things or on calls though

Also do people have recommendations for keyboard wrist wrests that aren’t the garbo $12 Kensington ones? Mine is slowly ripping open on the front seem and the foam is exploding out like a tube of biscuits. If there’s like a red bubbleesque place with lots of different designs that would be great
