Yeah I can imagine. It's cool! Also I suppose this is as good a time as any to mention that I will not require portraits for map token purposes (or others), so people don't have to scramble for Google Image Search and wade through pages of crudely drawn fantasy porn to find something usable if they haven't by now. You can still do so if you really want to, but it is purely optional!

Eventually the time came to strike back. He and his best student, Meldon, made their way behind enemy lines, sneaking into the goblin's fortress and assassinating their leader. It wasn;t all perfectly smooth, however, as their deed was noticed and the alarm raised before they could make it all the way out. Meldon was mortally wounded in the escape, but Rith carried him on his shoulders to safety. Though he succumbed to his wounds, he would at least be given a proper burial. With their leader assassinated, the goblins had only bloody vengeance in their minds as they attacked the settlement one last time, giving it their all. Of course, Rith and the other leaders had seen this coming and sprung a trap which left hundreds of goblins buried under tons of rock. The rest were easily picked off from above. With the safety and security of his home now assured, and his students now equally capable of defending it against new threats, Rith chose to give in to his wanderlust and explore the outside world. He found there was no lack of work for capable warriors. He found work with several different adventuring guilds, making a name for himself once again. Word of his deeds in taking down various warlords and beastial threats would spread to his homeland, where he was still celebrated as a hero. When the ecclipse came, and magic seemed to leave the world, Right made his way home to consult with the sages there to learn what he could. When he arrived, he found that they were powerless, and had no knowledge of what was causing this disaster. When word from the academy spread to the mountainhome, he quickly answered the call.

Walter Morgan Background: Walter’s early life was brutal and plagued with misfortune, as is typical amongst the children unfortunate enough to be born to parents involved in criminal activities. Walter was abused and, worse, often ignored by his father, who was the leader of a small time bandit group who made their living off the largess and hard work of others. Walter never knew his mother, but he surmised that she was some local whore of some sort, for those were the only sot of women he ever saw his father mingle with. His father liked to think of Walter as his successor and future right hand man, but Walter would have none of it. When Walter was old enough to think for himself, he set a trap for his father by informing the authorities of his next hideout spot. The guards mercilessly slaughtered Walter’s father and his merry men, and Walter was taken in as a ‘ward of the city,’ under the personal guidance of Lord Moore of Ankore. As the child of a bandit, Walter had been trained in certain skills that Moore could take advantage of politically. Over time, Walter became almost blindly devoted to Lord Moore, viewing him both as a father figure and lord, treating his word as law. Luckily for Walter, or perhaps it is because of this that Walter admired Moore, Lord Moore was a good man, even if he knew his way across dirty politics. Walter proved himself so capable that he quickly became Moore’s metaphorical right hand. If Moore ever needed anything done without his direct involvement, it was Walter who got it done. If someone needed to be spied on, Walter did the spying. Walter has even performed a couple of political assassinations before. Although Walter believes in the greater good and the power and importance of laws and society, he also knows that occasionally you have to get your hands dirty to preserve these things. Thus, Walter has no mercy or sympathy with the forces of evil and chaos, and seeks to wipe them out at every opportunity. Walter has been content to serve under Lord Moore up until the eclipse and the following events. Although he feels his duty is to stay with Lord Moore, he feels he has a bigger duty to try and help piece the world back together again before it falls apart. He did not act upon these urges until he received a letter one fateful day… -------------------------- “Sir. Would like to talk to you, but is personal matter. Can wait, but prefer not to.” Walter steps into his master’s chambers; Lord Moore was stooped over a desk, quill in hand, writing something that Walter figured was undoubtedly very important; he half considered leaving without a response. He offered a salute, following the rituals as if his life was dependant on their precision. “Walter? Come on in.” Moore says without turning around or putting down the quill. “I’ve got a minute to spare in just…” he trails off, finishing his thought on paper before putting his quill down. “There.” He stands up from his chair, turning around to face Walter, who still stood in a sharp salute. He nods, and Walters relaxes, placing his hands at his side. “You know the situation.” Walter continues. “World coming to an end; balance of nations previously dependant on equal arcane power has been marginalized. Formula has changed, outcome uncertain, but loss of human life inevitable, regardless of victor. Worse yet, divine links have been severed. Gods still exist, undoubtedly, but those lacking in moral character, the spineless who can only do the right thing when someone is looming over their shoulder, will take advantage of absence to their own unscrupulous ends. Society might crumble. In short, without the balance of arcane power, moral guidance of the divine, or social binding of society, mankind will tear itself apart.” “Yes, Walter. I am aware of the vastness of the situation. We’ve discussed this before, what makes you bring it to my attention at this hour?” Lord Moore looks out the window of his study; the sky was black with night, save for the bright twinkling of the stars and the dull luminescence of the moon. Walter reaches into his pocket and produces an opened letter and hands it to Moore, who takes it out of its sleeve and reads it carefully, his brow furrowing as he understands Walter’s intent. Walter knows he understands, but feels he must say his intent out loud regardless. “Take my duty seriously, but fate of the world even more serious. Requesting leave to search into this matter personally. Can claim you sent me; would reflect well, give more influence.” Walter’s tone is flat, and his face calm. Moore simply nods at Walter’s suggestion, placing the letter back into the seal before handing it back. “Yes. You may go. I do not like the idea of losing my best body guard, but I have a feeling you will leave regardless my answer.” Walter does not respond; Moore knows that Walter stays silent when he doesn’t wish to admit someone else is right. “You can leave immediately,” Walters nods and begins to turn away, “but on one condition.” Walter turns back around to face Lord Moore. “You send me news of what you find. I wish to know what is going on elsewhere in the world.” Walter nods, and leaves the study without another word. Moore returns to his scroll and quill, writing himself a note to hire more guards. code:

Carcharoth posted:What? Nooooooo! Was finishing writing up lengthy and detailed backstory, just got back from Vegas. Anyway! First of all, let me state that if I'd picked characters solely based on quality of sheet/background, rather than also having to be mindful of keeping party size/role distribution somewhat reasonable, I'd have ended up with well over a dozen sheets. There have been some pretty awesome characters brought to the table here and I regret being unable to take all of them – it was a struggle to get this list down to seven! Dallan Invictus, playing Landra Tirsul Eiendommelighet, playing Petra M'orderial Nimlach, playing Alagand of Everleaf Clanpot Shake, playing Taldrel Darlhunt Winson_Paine, playing Roland Ca'Nathas The Transhumanist, playing Annetta Voss Stormtrooper, playing Coreladdabar of Lockhaven IV Those who haven't been picked: at some point I may be in need of replacement characters, either because someone dropped out or because they got themselves killed for good. (Raise Dead is handy, but do not expect it to be the end-all, be-all.) If such a thing occurs, I will turn to existing submissions in this thread before asking for new ones. Impressions will be taken care of in the game thread. If any of you wish to establish existing connections between your characters, though, you can do that OOC in here. The game will begin at some point during the next few days as I've a bunch of poo poo to sort out both regarding this game and general RL matters! Landra's been living in Mitback for the past thirty-odd years, so I could see her running into, at the very least, Alagund, Petra, and Coreladdabar: but Alagund tends to work alone and incognito from what I'm reading, and Petra and she would not get along at all. She'd probably have worked with Corel occasionally during his time in the city (though not a permanent part of his band), and she'd definitely have been one of the "concerned citizens" raiding the orc lair.

Well, if Coreladdabar and Annetta use their biggest guns and their action points, there's a small chance that they might be able to drop the Oblivion Wraith before its turn rolls around, or at least slide him far enough away from others to keep them out of his aura, allowing Taldrel to make with the healing before Alagand dies of aura-related injuries on his next turn, which would then allow Alagand to heal Petra and let everyone else get back in the fight and pile onto the others. Because if Alagand starts his turn within two or three squares of either wraith, you're going to need a Raise Dead ritual, and if I'm remembering correctly, might have to deal with another Wraith. Edit: And Dallan already made that point. Oh well.

I am thinking that we are sadly fast coming to the point were an expeditious retreat is in order. Either that or a TPK. Trying to rely on my luck with foxxbot (lol) is bound to failure. As evidenced by my previous roll, followed by the AP failure roll.

For the record, by the book this is a perfectly ordinary L11 encounter, which has gone south for a number of reasons (which certainly do include really poor rolls in all the wrong places). I wasn't exactly frothing at the mouth and chanting "TPK! TPK!" while coming up with it.

That Nihil aura is beastly. That, combined with having our main user of radiant attacks incapacitated, doesn't help.
|
# ? Feb 9, 2009 20:09 |
|
Oh, I know that. It's more that sometimes when the rolls aren't going your way, best to just get the hell out, rather than ending up as a bunch of wraiths. But that would be cowardly. However, if I have learned anything, it's that sometimes cowardice is the way to go. Also, I hate dicebots. Just felt it needed to be reiterated.

So MMA and I (read: MMA himself because I am dumb when it comes to rules) figured out that Alagand cannot actually get healed by Taldrel this round on the grounds that he is still suffering the effects of the "lol no healing surges 4 u" aura and will be suffering it until his next turn starts, at which point he will promptly take 5 force damage and die. Consequently, Petra attempted a bullrush to push the vortex wraith out of the way which, if it succeeded, would prevent Alagand from taking 5 force damage immediately upon starting his turn... and failed. sry nimlach and let's hope this doesn't turn into a TPK e: on plus side, the large amount of tactical chicanery that has been needed during this combat suggests that more of you should spend time in the IRC channel! Behind-the-scenes drama ahoy!
