Petra M'orderial

Petra arrived shortly after Taldrel did, thanking Melora for hastening his travel here. He politely stood as each person entered, then seated himself as they sat down. When Coreladdabar remained standing, Petra acknowledged him with a nod, then did likewise. He now stands next to the guard in a relaxed stance, seeking neither to draw attention to himself nor to avoid it. Though he exudes an aura of calm and tranquility and manages to keep a slight smile, he nonetheless appears shiftless and worried, looking around anxiously as he waits for Carthaune's arrival.

BACKGROUND, PERSONALITY, OTHER COMMENTS
Petra is of medium height and build for a male half-elf, with slightly unkempt neck-length blond hair, mild green eyes, and soft facial features. He wears a plain, forest green cloak--the better to hide its magical properties--with a silver clasp on his left shoulder. Petra's body is mostly covered with the ceremonial vine and leaf tattoos of Melora, which barely peek out under the edges of his black-trimmed, shimmering green scale. He wears small strips of fur around his elbows and knees for increased comfort. A sword and an axe hang at his side, and the standard of Melora, an intricate seashell, are visible in two places on his body; one hanging from a chain wrapped around his hand and wrist, and the other on a small shield slung over his shoulder. When Petra isn't nervous as he is now, he can usually be seen with a calm smile on his face.

Petra is surprised to meet Taldrel Darlhunt here, surprised only because he's never heard of the man. Has he really been gone from Utinmar that long, or is the man simply not well-known? No matter. They had a nice chat while waiting for the others to arrive. Taldrel bears the markings of a high-ranking officer of Niemund--that much Petra recognized--and he exudes competence, coming across to Petra as a skilled commander. The half-elf obviously is not prone to the sin of pride which plagues so many adventurers--he's content to stalwartly serve his country at home.

Alagand certainly doesn't look the part of a good man. Maybe it's the slight skulk inherent in his movements, his intent, predatory gaze, or his powerful build quite unbecoming of an elf. Or maybe it's the array of threatening-looking tattoos covering his head and hands. Petra can't quite place the man - he swears he's heard that voice, or one like it, before. Alagand is definitely reluctant to say much about himself. But Petra's willing to stifle his half-elf curiosity and avoid prying. There's no use pressuring the elf to speak if he doesn't want to, and at any rate, his past isn't terribly important. Petra knows well that even the worst villain can become a force for good.

Seeing Landra here is also not much of a surprise to Petra. They've met before briefly in Mitback several years ago, and Petra knows her to be an accomplished swordsman and courtier. She's a respectable and strong-willed eladrin with a good heart. If anything, he's surprised they haven't worked together. Petra heard from some eladrin in the Everleaf that she, too, views her position among the humans as a chance to act as a bridge between disparate peoples - in her case, the eladrin and the humans of Utinmar. He is silently pretty sure that she is the same Landra Tirsul who fought alongside his mother, Maele M'orderial, during the Great War. Petra was eager to greet her.

Petra hasn't met very many warlocks - a few that he's fought against have been rather evil, and the ones he's fought alongside have been of questionable motive at best. He's not quite sure what to make of Annetta. She comes across as another selfish fame-seeker, the same kind that have become commonplace and even predatory in the last few months. But he nonetheless admires her for her forthrightness and her confidence, two features which are lacking in most warlocks he's met, and he's sure she's a competent and skilled spellweaver. Pride and cynicism are not virtues. But just about anyone can be shown the light and, in the mean time, Petra is quite content to return her cynicism and scorn with courtesy and kind words.

Petra has heard just about everything there is to know about Roland and is happy to finally have his chance to adventure alongside the wiry elf. But in spite of his familiarity with all the legends and tall tales, the elf remains an enigma. Does he have a genuinely good heart, seeking out evil only to prevent harm? Or is he another run-of-the-mill, done-everything, revel-in-glory haughty adventurer like so many others Petra has reluctantly worked with? His exploits with Malthasar the barbarian seem to support the latter hypothesis. But Petra is willing to suspend judgment. Everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves.

For how little they seem to get along, Petra sees Coreladdabar and Annetta as two sides of the same coin, both of them arrogant and self-absorbed in different ways. It's difficult to get past the outfit Coreladdabar wears, which is certainly too much, and Petra would love to have a little chat with him about the negative consequences of vanity. That gold-trimmed doublet could, at a glance, have fed a starving Syno family for several weeks. Petra takes pains to keep his disapproving eye from manifesting too much toward Corel, but it keeps slipping through. It's a shame, really, because Corel seems like he could be a genuinely nice half-elf.

Granting allies a +1 bonus to Diplomacy. Not that it's relevant, since every other half-elf is doing the same drat thing.

Petra M'orderial - calling cyan

Petra nods in thoughtful agreement at Landra's words. Yes, someone else who understands that the task before us is an obligation for the capable, not a choice for the willing.

He struggles to free himself from his gnawing anxiety, and his eyes fall on Taldrel's spear, propped against the wall. He moves closer to it, his eyes dancing across its haft and point, taking in the craftsmanship.

As he speaks, every word of his is carefully crafted, spoken softly but authoritatively, with a medium pitch and in a mildly singsongy manner. A slight Saaranese accent is audible to anyone who notices. It might seem a bit alien, but Petra isn't known as a skilled speaker for no reason.

"Sir Darlhunt, if it's not too much, might I ask how a guard captain happens upon such a fine weapon as this one?"

"I wouldn't say 'more interesting'," Petra says humbly. "For several years, I've been around Westpoint and Syno. If Niemund is anything like those cities, leading city guardsmen must truly be difficult work. The alleys of a city seem a much more threatening place to do battle than the wilds of a forest." He stumbles slightly over the words "do battle", trying to find the combination of words which reminds him the least of bloodshed.

He pauses for a second before gesturing to his sword. A large, cruciform hilt is visible, and the blade radiates heat even through its scabbard. "I received this blade as a gift from a Saaranese noble, after some friends and I rescued his daughter from a band of kobolds. He insisted I take it. I was reluctant to possess such a destructive implement at first, but it has served me well.

"Of course, the greatest gift was the opportunity Melora gave me to show a few of those misguided creatures the error of their ways." He places great emphasis on the name of his god, as though attempting to deemphasize his own role in the process.

Petra's kind eyes fall on the two men as he watches their debate with some measure of curiosity. He smiles at the priest's words regarding Pelor's ever-presence and clasps his holy symbol tightly.

When they're gone, he looks at each group member and proclaims: "Hopefully, if there is any doubt about the importance or worthiness of the task before us, there isn't anymore." He thinks back to Westpoint and how the sudden shortage of magical healers must be causing its citizens great pain, and resumes his anxious stance once again. "Many, many people will suffer greatly if we are not successful."

Petra begins cutting up the cake, offering a slice to each person in turn.

"I agree with Taldrel. Now that we've had the chance to get comfortable, how might we be of assistance? I'm sure we're all well aware of the implications of the..." Petra clears his throat, not quite knowing how to phrase the next bit. "The implications of the recent changes if their effects are left untreated."

Diplomacy +17 if for some reason it's relevant.

Petra nods in acceptance of Carthaune's answer. He holds his tongue rather than elaborating too much, sensing that his companions are growing impatient--of course, he, too, is aching to actually do something.

"I will continue praying that the effects of the Eclipse may be lifted. I know too well the damage it has already wrought both on the magically talented and on those who depend on them," he mourns. "But yes, while those of us who are gifted remain so, let us hear what we can do."

Petra listens calmly to Carthaune's exposition, taking in as much detail as possible. He casts an eye periodically over his soon-to-be comrades, gauging their reactions and looking for any signs of recognition. The name sounds vaguely familiar, but I'm surprised I haven't heard much about this magician fellow or the towers he's inhabited. But it's not too much of a surprise. The Everleaf is a big place.

Petra is slightly annoyed by Annetta's questions, but refrains from casting a disapproving eye at her. She can't help being curious.

"I agree with the strangely tattooed elf and the guard captain. If this is the strongest lead a powerful mage such as yourself has been able to gather, then I can think of no better use of our resources than to see if your magic-using friend was on to something. And let us pray he was."

"We should make haste," he says, turning to Landra and Annetta and bowing slightly. "I have great trust that the two of you are capable of leading us to this place, but we should not tarry long." He furrows his brow as he tries to recall anything he might have picked up about the region.

"Lord Carthaune, unless there is anything else you think we should know, I'll be retiring, and I suggest everyone else do likewise. Deepest gratitude for your help and hospitality, and we will not disappoint you on our quest." Petra makes a motion to leave the chamber and head to the bed quarters.

Petra grins stupidly upon hearing of Roland's debaucherous ventures. He takes a moment to reflect on his own conquests, though he doesn't say anything. There's nothing wrong with having fun once in a while.

He takes the opportunity to enjoy the ride, bidding a sad farewell to his short stay at the Academy. He doesn't wince at the biting wind, the cold rain, or the barrenness of the plains. It's been some time since he had the chance to enjoy nature. A few years in Westpoint does a lot for a person's naturelust.

Petra also watches the riding habits of his traveling companions. Landra and Roland look like skilled riders; Taldrel is at least competent, as well. At the least, none of us are particularly bad on a horse.

After the long hours of riding, Petra breaks the relative silence of the trip. "Lovely day, isn't it?"

Petra's riding slows noticeable as he watches the birds pass. "Those are some very rare birds," he says somewhat stupidly, and he continues to watch them, somewhat distracted. "Take a good look. We are very lucky to have seen them at all." Hey, wait... what, exactly, are they doing here?

Petra notices the tension in the group growing as the two arcanists in the group seem somewhat unnerved by... something or other. He can't tell what, but wonders if their worries are connected to the mysterious birds. The pieces begin to fall into place in his head, and he's stopped by Alagand just before he gets a chance to ask.

He whips out of his absentminded mode and regards Alagand with a powerful stare. "Is it something sorcerous? We had all best be on our guard." His hand rests on the pommel of his sword, and he clasps his holy symbol tightly as he scans the surroundings.

Petra shakes his head at Alagand. "I do not hear anything."

"We ought to have a look. But let's all be on our guard while we do so. Anything..." he hisses slightly, "unnatural is a potential boon to our quest--or a potential threat."

Petra bows his head, clasps his holy symbol tightly and utters a quick, whispered prayer to Melora for guidance. "Great Mother of all things natural within this sphere, make me an instrument of thy will and point me where thou wouldst find me useful."

There's no response, but he still swears he can feel Melora's will in his head.

"I feel that we have been given signs from Melora," he states. "Let us see what we find." He turns his horse toward the small forest, setting off slowly.

Petra grunts somewhat angrily, or at least what passes for "angrily" with him, as he would rather have tried to rein in the horses for as long as possible. But there's no turning back now. and tries to spur his horse next to Taldrel. When this fails, he reluctantly dismounts, and utters a silent prayer for Melora for the animal's safety.

He readies his shield and draws his sword, steeling himself for the oncoming attack and standing slightly ahead of Taldrel. "Madam Tirsul, I do believe we'll be needing your services up here, as well."

Petra steps cautiously forward, calling out in Elven in case the fey can hear. His booming voice echoes powerfully, and the others can see why Petra is known as a speaker: "I am Petra M'orderial, the reaping blade of Melora. I swear you no harm if you surrender to me immediately!"

Doing some fancy contingency stuff:

I'm assuming Petra doesn't know the quicklings will reappear if they attack someone, but that he
does know to attack them if they do appear.

First, free action to set his sword aflame.

If someone ahead of Petra in the initiative order is AoOed by the fey, and Petra can reach them, move: walk adjacent to the fey, but as far north as possible, minor: issue Divine Challenge, and standard: use Shielding Smite, giving the +2 AC bonus to the attacked ally:

Petra charges forward relentlessly and without hesitation, stabbing downward with the blade.

If they're AoOed and Petra cannot reach them, but the attacker is within 11 squares, move: walk to within 5 squares, minor: issue Divine Challenge, standard: Radiant Delirium against them, and:

Petra holds out his sword hand. His holy symbol, hanging from his wrist, glows bright green, and searing light emanates from it toward the fey.

If no one ahead of Petra is AoOed by the fey, or they're more than 11 squares away, move: step forward to N15. If Petra is AoOed by the fey along the way, immediately stop and minor: issue Divine Challenge, and standard: Shielding Smite, giving AC bonus to nearest ally. Flavor text as above. If Petra is NOT AoOed by the fey, standard: Eyebite against Winterclaw Owlbear, and:

Petra points his sword at the Owlbear, his holy symbol hanging from his hand. His eyes glow bright green for just a second as he releases a psychic assault on the monster, and he issues a booming roar to get the creature's attention. "Face me, fel creature!"

Shielding Smite: +15 vs. AC, hit: 2d8+9 fire damage (crit: 25+2d6 fire damage), effect: +2 AC to chosen ally.
Radiant Delirium: +10 vs. Reflex, hit: 3d8+7 radiant damage (crit: 31 radiant damage) and target is dazed until the end of my next turn and suffers a -2 AC penalty, miss: half damage and target is dazed.
Eyebite: +10 vs. Will, hit: 1d6+5 psychic damage (crit: 11 psychic damage) and turn invisible to the target until start of my next turn.
Divine Challenge: Target suffers -2 attack roll penalty for attacks that don't include me as a target and takes 11 radiant damage if it doesn't attack me before the start of my next turn.

Petra always AoOs marked targets with Enfeebling Strike: +17 vs. AC, hit: 1d8+9 fire damage (crit: 17+2d6 fire damage) and target suffers a -2 attack roll penalty until the end of my next turn.
He AoOs nonmarked targets with Bolstering Strike: +17 vs. AC, hit: 1d8+9 fire damage (crit: 17+2d6 fire damage) and gain 2 temporary hit points.

Petra falls to his knees from the pain, but he doesn't utter a sound. He stands back up calmly, using his sword to help him as he stands, trying to mask his visible shakenness. One cannot show weakness before one's allies, even if one is bleeding from his side. In Elven, he calls: "Ordinarily, I only offer forgiveness once, fel monster. I will be merciful and offer it again."

His eyes glow with green radiance as he issues a strong smite, raising his sword into the air and smashing down with it.

"I suggest you accept my offer this time." Do not fall, Landra, for my mother's shield is with you.

Petra's head slowly recovers from the bear's blow, and he stands up defiantly. He hoists his sword into the air, the rain steaming as it hits his flaming blade, his holy symbol dangling from his wrist. The vine tattoos on his body begin to glow green and appear to extend, snaking forth in green bursts of energy toward his fey and bear adversaries. At the same time, his seemingly spartan green cloak begins to glow with a branch and leaf pattern. The scene would look quite pretty in a less gritty setting. "May the vines of Melora scour you from this forest!"

For a brief second, Petra's world explodes in a starburst of agony, followed by the sinking feeling of unconsciousness. But his eyes flare open, and he hears the voices of Taldrel and Alagand, and the words of his mother echo inside his head for a second: Remember that every blow you suffer is one that could have been aimed at another.

He regards the bear that swatted him; the poor creature is struggling to deal with Corel's web, and Petra hates the thought of attacking a restrained opponent. "Come, my fey friend," he calls to the quickling in Elven, trying his best to mimic the creature's strange accent. "Let us finish this." He brings his shield to bear in his right hand before pivoting and delivering a backhanded swipe with his left.

Petra calms down from the battle quickly. His adrenaline high departs as the realization of what he's just done hits him, so he doesn't waste any time. "Are all of you well?" He extends a healing hand to Landra's side, mending her broken bones with some of his life force.

Years of battle have weaned Petra from his sense of sorrow and pity for the fallen, but they haven't beaten it out of him completely.

"We ought to make camp soon," Petra says to the group. "But we have taken five lives, and at least two of them"--he gestures to the bears--"knew not that they did anything wrong. I shall request a moment of silence for the fallen, but I won't judge any among you who don't join me in it."

As he speaks, he purposefully checks the necks of the two bears to make sure there's no pulse. In the one Roland fell, he notices a weak, residual heartbeat. He takes a moment to quench the flame on his sword before making a quick, shallow cut to an artery on the bear's neck. It's a technique he learned as a hunter and as a paladin of Melora, a painless way to hasten their drift into oblivion. Of course, the arrow in the bear's brain is likely to kill it before it can bleed to death this way; this is as much a way to ease Petra's conscience as it is to ease the beast's suffering.

Petra repeats the process with the owlbear. He has a little more trouble locating the beast's jugular, but eventually he finds it. Unsurprisingly, there's no pulse. The two quicklings are pretty obviously dead, but Petra still regards them with a sad eye.

He kneels over the creatures and hastily whispers a prayer.

Anyone who's close (Landra, Alagand, Taldrel): "Blessed mother of the wilds, forgive us that we have trespassed upon thy quarry. May the blood of these creatures hallow thy grounds, not stain them, and may their souls quickly be spirited away, that no further suffering may come to them. I am thy humble servant and have taken life only that I may preserve it. Na."

Lay on Hands on Landra. She can spend a healing surge and regain an additional 5 hit points.

His conscience satisfied for the time being, Petra removes his armor and the tunic underneath to have a look at his wounds. His body is thinner and leaner than one would expect for a warrior, and it's covered with scars and small deformations, the result of a thousand powerful blows and stabs he's suffered without complaint, as well as a lush, rich landscape of vine and branch tattoos. One of his arms is pretty far from where it's supposed to be, so he pushes it back into his shoulder as neatly as he can. Additionally, he's got a few powerful gashes and bruises on him, including a deep, nasty-looking wound where a broken rib is jutting out slightly and blood is slowly leaking out. Getting stabbed by a fey and mauled by a bear in the same spot tends to hurt quite a bit.

He sits on a rock and removes a needle and thread from his backpack. He wills his sword aflame so he can sterilize the needle; then, he grimaces as he pushes his rib back into place and begins sewing that wound shut.

"It was not a dialect I am familiar with," Petra says in response to Alagand's query, "but it was something like 'he is more mighty than you'." Turning to Annetta and Corel, he inquires: "We were drawn to this position by signs of powerful magic. Do the two of you still sense anything? We should not forget why we were diverted from our quest."

He bites the thread as he finishes closing the wound before checking the rest of his body. He reaches around to check his back; there's a bit where two of his lumbar vertebrae seem to be sticking out, another result of the fey's sword, and he's lucky not to be paralyzed from the waist down.

"I cannot reach this one," he gestures. "Could someone set the spine into place and sew it shut for me?" He offers the needle and thread, as well as his two leather gloves.

Spending three healing surges.

Petra remains seated, his back still giving him some trouble, but he examines the brooch as it makes its rounds throughout the group. He likes the leaf motif; from a purely aesthetic perspective, it's a good choice for a paladin of Melora.

"I certainly appreciate the sentiment, Taldrel," he says. "Landra, if you'd like to take a look at it, feel free, but otherwise I'll be honored to put it to use." He sets it down, then feebly goes back to work repairing some of the damage to his body.

"I doubt that I will be terribly useful either for tracking our mounts or for obtaining insight into the portal," he suggests, "but should we split up, I will go wherever Landra doesn't. If either group is attacked, we'll be in need of warriors to draw fire."

I identify as smart.
(But that doesn't make it so...)
Petra M'orderial

Petra only barely hears what Taldrel and Annetta are saying. Wordlessly, he goes to work searching the area for healing herbs to help soothe the poor beast's pain.

Only after a a few seconds do Annetta's words register in his mind. "If it is acceptable," he starts, "please let me tend to this animal for a second."

Scavenging for herbs. Perception +9, Nature +12.
