This performance by Lucius for NPR's Tiny Desk series has completely captivated me.

I bought the EP and it's really good, but there's something about the simplicity of the Tiny Desk Concert that I think works even better than the studio version.

The song shouldn't work at all. It has an odd structure, has chipmunk voices in the chorus, and the song just sort of dwindles off at the end...

and it's absolutely fascinating and peaceful and I just can't stop playing it. :ohdear:

Yeah, I'm pretty obsessed with this song. I think it's a superficially almost goofy song, but when you pay attention to what it's saying it's pretty fantastic.

Seriously though Zammuto is the dude who is responsible for a lot of The Books' sound, and his solo work is basically The Books with less cello.

Best songs are Go Home and How Loud Your Heart Gets but they are literally all good.

I didn't like How Loud Your Heart Gets too much the first time I heard it, but it's grown on me. Go Home is probably my favorite off the album, it's just a great song with such intense delivery.

I like those two especially because I feel like they go together and are written to the same person, although I might be projecting my own personal relationship onto the songs too much. It reminds me of how Adele did Rolling In The Deep and Someone Like You about the same person, and how one is the self-deluded "I can do better gently caress you" song and then the final song on each album is the true feelings hopeless love song.

Whether that was the intent Lucius had, I think it's a workable interpretation.

Cool, I will have to have a listen with that in mind! I do like the song quite a bit now anyway, if that wasn't clear. The whole album is pretty much gold all the way through as far as I'm concerned.

This is going to sound really vague, but here goes...

Someone posted a spaceship song on here a while ago that had a folk song feel to it...
It told the story of a guy on a doomed spaceship that tries to save his shipmate, but they end up knocking him out and putting him in the only spacesuit available.
I am dying to listen to it again, but have not been able to find it. As far as I can remember, the entire album was space themed.

Long shot, but it wasn't this, was it? Not quite that story line, but it is a space-themed folk song that one might potentially interpret that way.

There's a whole bunch of hipster bands that seem to be based on the premise "I don't think anyone under 40 has heard the thing we're directly copying". Not always a bad thing as long as the music's good. I saw Lucrecia Dalt the other day and the whole show I was just like "oh this is exactly Laurie Anderson with no sense of humor or joy".
