If they belong to a generic class, you can change their class as part of this process. A good time to do this is when your character is pretty high in level, and you can afford to do it at "Genius" level. This will give you the highest possible stats to start out with. The higher a stat is at level one, the faster it will grow, which lets your character get stupidly powerful fast.
